Chapter 9: The Trap at the Old Warehouse
I read the message again.
Then I showed it to James.
He examined the screen carefully.
“Don't reply.””
I looked at him.
“He's threatening my sister.””
“I know.””
“We need to find her.””
“We will. But we need to do this properly.””
I paced across the kitchen.
“How can we sit here discussing procedures when Richard might have Emily?””
James placed his briefcase on the counter.
“Because if we rush into whatever he's planning, we could make things worse.””
I rubbed my face.
Then I looked toward the living room.
Lily was sitting beside Ethan, drawing on a piece of paper.
She had drawn a birthday cake with eight purple candles.
My daughter looked up and smiled.
“Daddy, look.””
I walked over.
“That's beautiful.””
“I drew one for Mommy too.””
She pointed to a second cake.
It had two candles.
“Why two?””
“Because Mommy has been gone for four years, but I still want to celebrate her.””
I knelt beside her.
“That is a wonderful idea.””
She handed me the drawing.
Then she whispered:
“Can we have cake now?””
My throat tightened.
“Of course.””
I stood and went to the kitchen.
The birthday cake was still on the island.
The frosting had started to dry, but the little sugar butterflies were still in place.
I cut a generous slice.
Then I placed it in front of Lily.
She looked at the plate.
“Is this all mine?””
I smiled.
“Yes, sweetheart. Every bite.””
She picked up her fork.
Then she stopped.
“Can Ethan have some?””
I looked at my son.
He smiled.
“Only if you let me have the butterfly.””
Lily giggled.
“Deal.””
I watched them share the cake.
And I made a decision.
Whatever happened with Richard, I would not allow my children to spend another day feeling unsafe.
I returned to James.
“What's the plan?””
He lowered his voice.
“We preserve the messages, report the threat, and contact Emily through a safe channel. We do not meet Richard alone.””
I nodded.
“Do it.””
James began making calls.
Within minutes, the situation was being handled by professionals who could investigate the threat and locate my sister.
I sat at the kitchen island.
For the first time that evening, I looked closely at the USB drive Rachel had left.
I remembered James telling me not to open it.
But I also remembered the letter.
Rachel had wanted the original evidence delivered to him.
So I handed it over.
He placed it inside a protective case.
“I'll have it examined properly.””
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
He listened.
His expression changed.
“Are you certain?””
Another pause.
“Understood.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Emily has been located.””
I stood.
“Where?””
“She's safe.””
I exhaled.
“Thank God.””
“But there's a problem.””
“What?””
“She says she needs to speak to you immediately. And she refuses to discuss it over the phone.””
I looked toward the children.
“Can she come here?””
James nodded.
“We'll arrange a safe meeting.””
Two hours later, my sister arrived.
Emily looked older than I remembered.
Her dark hair was tied back, and she wore a long gray coat.
The moment she saw me, she hugged me tightly.
“Mark.””
I held her.
“I'm sorry.””
She pulled back.
“For what?””
“For not knowing what Rachel was dealing with.””
Emily looked toward the children.
“Are they okay?””
I nodded.
“They're safe.””
She crouched and hugged Ethan and Lily.
“Look at you two. You're getting so big.””
Lily smiled.
“Are you Aunt Emily?””
Emily laughed softly.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Lily looked at her carefully.
“Did Mommy know you?””
Emily's smile faded.
“She loved me very much.””
Lily nodded.
Then she held out her birthday drawing.
“I made this for her.””
Emily accepted it with trembling hands.
“Oh, Lily.””
She hugged my daughter.
After the children returned to the living room, Emily sat at the kitchen island.
James placed Rachel's letter in front of her.
Emily read it quietly.
Then she closed her eyes.
“She was right.””
I leaned forward.
“About what?””
Emily looked at me.
“Richard had been trying to get control of the property long before you met Vanessa.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Rachel asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed Richard was watching the family.””
My chest tightened.
Emily continued.
“He had approached Rachel with several proposals. He wanted the land because a development company was planning to purchase the surrounding properties.””
“And Vanessa?””
Emily shook her head.
“Rachel discovered that Vanessa had been introduced to you through someone connected to Richard.””
I looked down.
“Why didn't Rachel tell me?””
“She tried.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Emily's eyes filled.
“She called you the night before she went into the hospital. You were in a meeting, remember?””
I remembered.
I had been negotiating a major construction contract.
I had told Rachel I would call her back.
But by the time I finished, she was asleep.
The following morning, she had been admitted to the hospital.
I had never returned that call.
Emily continued.
“She wanted to explain everything. But she became too sick.””
I covered my face.
For years, I had believed that Rachel's final weeks were filled with ordinary worries.
Now I was learning how much she had been carrying alone.
Emily reached into her handbag.
“I brought something.””
She placed a small silver key on the counter.
It had the same blue compass logo as the law firm.
“What's this?””
“Rachel gave it to me.””
“Where does it go?””
Emily looked at James.
“To a private document locker.””
James leaned forward.
“Which institution?””
Emily gave him the name.
He immediately recognized it.
“The old financial building downtown?””
She nodded.
“Rachel rented a secure storage locker there. She told me that if Richard ever tried to interfere with the children's inheritance, I had to retrieve the contents.””
I stared at the key.
“What's inside?””
Emily's voice became quiet.
“Everything.””
She explained that Rachel had kept original letters, recordings, photographs, and copies of the communications Richard had sent her.
There were also records documenting his attempts to approach other property owners.
“Why didn't you retrieve it sooner?”” I asked.
Emily looked down.
“Because Richard threatened me.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What did he do?””
“He sent photographs of my apartment. He knew where I worked. He told me that if I interfered, he would make sure I lost everything.””
I stared at her.
“And you kept quiet?””
“I was scared, Mark.””
She looked at the living room.
“But when I heard what happened to Lily, I couldn't stay silent anymore.””
I reached across the counter and held her hand.
“You did the right thing.””
James examined the key.
“We need to arrange retrieval with proper documentation. We should not go there without informing the authorities.””
Emily nodded.
Then my phone vibrated.
Another unknown number.
Tomorrow. Warehouse. Bring the USB. No police.
I showed it to James.
He shook his head.
“He's becoming desperate.””
Emily looked at the message.
Then her face changed.
“That's the wrong warehouse.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The old warehouse Richard used to own was demolished two years ago.””
James looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
Emily nodded.
“I used to visit Rachel there.””
I stared at the message.
“Then where does he want us to go?””
Emily enlarged the message.
At the bottom was a location pin.
She examined it.
Then whispered:
“That's not a warehouse.””
“What is it?””
“It's the old community center.””
I looked at her.
“Why would Richard call it a warehouse?””
Emily swallowed.
“Because there's a basement underneath it.””
James immediately picked up his phone.
“I'm contacting the investigators.””
But Emily wasn't finished.
She opened her handbag and removed a folded photograph.
It showed Richard standing beside a younger man.
The younger man wore a construction uniform.
I recognized him.
He was one of the subcontractors who had worked on a project my company had completed three years earlier.
His name was Daniel Price.
I looked at the photograph.
“Why is Daniel with Richard?””
Emily shook her head.
“Because Daniel was the person who helped Richard access Rachel's property records.””
I stared.
“That's impossible. Daniel worked for my company.””
Emily looked at me.
“Mark, that's exactly why Richard wanted to get close to you.””
James took the photograph.
“Do you have anything connecting Daniel to the attempted transfer?””
Emily nodded.
“He signed as a witness on one of the original documents.””
I looked at the paper again.
The signature was visible beneath Richard's name.
And suddenly I remembered something.
Daniel had been at our house two months earlier.
He had asked to use my office printer.
He had also spent several minutes speaking with Vanessa.
I had thought nothing of it.
Now I understood that the house had been infiltrated long before the birthday party.
My phone rang.
It was a number I didn't recognize.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke.
“Mark Carter?””
“Yes.””
“I'm calling from the security office at your property.””
I frowned.
“What property?””
“Your family home. Someone has been trying to access the rear gate.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“We have a vehicle registration.””
I stood.
“Send me the details.””
The guard continued.
“Sir, there's something else.””
“What?””
“We found a small package outside your garage.””
“What kind of package?””
“A brown envelope.””
I looked toward the back door.
“Don't touch it. Secure the area and contact the authorities.””
The guard agreed.
I ended the call.
James stood.
“What's happened?””
I told him.
He immediately contacted the investigators.
Emily looked toward the window.
“Richard knows we found the key.””
I turned.
“How?””
She swallowed.
“Because I wasn't supposed to bring it here.””
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?””
Emily looked down.
“I think someone has been following me.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my phone vibrated again.
This time, it was a photograph.
It showed the front of our house.
Taken from across the street.
The timestamp was two minutes earlier.
Below it was a message.
You have until morning.
Another message followed.
After that, your children will learn what happens when people refuse to cooperate.
I felt my hands go cold.
James immediately moved toward the living room.
“We need to relocate the children to a secure place.””
I nodded.
My mother gathered Lily and Ethan.
Lily looked confused.
“Daddy, are we going somewhere?””
I knelt.
“Just for a little while, sweetheart.””
“Can I bring Mr. Rabbit?””
“Of course.””
She ran upstairs.
Ethan remained beside me.
“Dad?””
I looked at him.
“What's wrong?””
He lowered his voice.
“There's something I didn't tell you.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
He looked toward Emily.
“Richard came to school once.””
I froze.
“When?””
“Last month.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Vanessa said he was a family friend.””
I felt sick.
“What did he say to you?””
Ethan looked down.
“He asked me where Lily kept Mommy's things.””
I swallowed.
“And what did you tell him?””
“Nothing.””
“Good.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“But he said he already knew.””
I looked toward James.
Then back at my son.
“What exactly did he say?””
Ethan whispered:
“He said that if I wanted Lily to stay safe, I had to give him the blue notebook.””
I went completely still.
The blue notebook.
I looked at Emily.
She slowly reached into her handbag and removed another photograph.
It showed Rachel holding a small blue notebook.
On the cover were the words:
*THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
Emily looked at me.
“Mark, that's what Richard has been searching for all these years.””
I stared at the photograph.
Then I remembered Rachel's final letter.
The documents.
The USB.
The hidden locker.
Everything had been leading to one thing.
And now Richard believed my son knew where it was.
But before I could ask another question, James's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then slowly lowered it.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The security team has identified the vehicle outside your house.””
“Whose vehicle?””
James swallowed.
“Vanessa's.””
I stared at him.
“But she's supposed to be with Richard.””
James shook his head.
“Mark, she wasn't alone.””
He turned the phone toward me.
The security photograph showed Vanessa standing beside the car.
And beside her was someone I had never expected to see.
My business partner.
Daniel Price.
The man who had helped build my company.
The man who had attended Lily's birthday party.
The man who had stood in my kitchen and called me brother.
He was holding a small blue notebook.
And beneath the photograph was a message:
We have what Rachel left behind. Come alone if you want to see it.
I looked toward the living room.
My children were waiting.
My mother was holding Lily's hand.
Ethan stood beside Emily.
I understood then that this was no longer just about a house or a bank account.
Richard had built his plan around my family.
And now the final piece of Rachel's protection was in the hands of the people who had betrayed us.
But they had made one mistake.
They believed I would come alone.
I looked at James.
“It's time we stopped letting them choose the rules.””
May you like
He nodded.
And for the first time that night, I felt certain that we were finally going to uncover the entire truth.
