Chapter 6: The First Investment
The unknown number sent another message at 12:07 p.m.
Check the date on Daniel's company registration.
I forwarded the screenshot to Rachel without responding.
She was in the kitchen speaking with the lender's investigator when I opened my laptop and searched the company records that were publicly available.
Northstar Travel Consulting had been registered eighteen months earlier.
The company description mentioned corporate travel planning, international event coordination, and hospitality partnerships.
Nothing unusual.
But the registration date caught my attention.
Eighteen months earlier was shortly after Vanessa had started talking about helping Daniel expand his business.
I remembered the evening clearly.
We'd been sitting on the back patio after dinner. Vanessa had poured two glasses of wine and told me her brother was tired of working for other people.
"He has real potential," she'd said.
"He just needs someone to believe in him.""
I'd agreed that Daniel deserved a chance.
I'd even offered to review a business plan if he wanted help with financing.
He'd thanked me and said he'd already found an investor.
At the time, I'd thought nothing of it.
Now I wondered who that investor had been.
Rachel joined me at the kitchen island.
"Have you found anything?""
I turned the laptop toward her.
"The company was registered eighteen months ago. I remember Vanessa talking about Daniel's expansion around that time.""
"Did you provide any money?""
"No.""
"Did Vanessa?""
"Not that she told me.""
Rachel studied the registration.
"Let's avoid assuming the company itself is fraudulent. A registered business can still have legitimate operations. What we need to establish is whether the transfers were authorized, what the money was intended for, and whether the documents were knowingly misrepresented.""
She placed her phone on the counter.
"The bank has confirmed that the education account's remaining balance is protected by a temporary hold. The investigation into the transferred funds is continuing.""
"Can they reverse the transfers?""
"Possibly, depending on where the money went and what the receiving institution can verify. But we shouldn't count on an immediate recovery.""
I nodded.
"What about the property application?""
"The lender has suspended it pending review. No loan has been issued, and no lien has been recorded.""
For the first time that morning, I allowed myself a full breath.
Then Rachel added, "There is one other issue. The lender's records show that the application included a supporting statement describing the property as available collateral with the consent of both parties.""
"Both parties?""
"Your name appears beside an electronic authorization. The lender is investigating the authenticity of that authorization.""
I stared at the table.
"Can Vanessa use the house without my consent?""
"That depends on the legal documents and the type of transaction. But based on what we know, no one should treat this application as valid merely because your name appears on it.""
Rachel closed her folder.
"We need the original records from Daniel's company. If he submitted the documents, his business may hold evidence about who prepared them and where the money went.""
I looked at the message on my phone.
"Someone seems determined for us to find out.""
"That could be a genuine witness," Rachel said.
"Or someone trying to influence the investigation. We verify everything.""
I agreed.
Then I called David.
He answered on the first ring.
"Michael, I've been waiting for your call.""
"Have you found anything about Northstar?""
"Yes. The company has received several payments from accounts associated with Daniel. But the transfer history doesn't match the business activity described in the documents we have.""
"Explain.""
"Some payments are marked as travel deposits. Others are listed as consulting fees. There are also transfers between accounts with no clear invoice or service record attached.""
"How much money are we talking about?""
"I can't confirm the total yet. The records are incomplete.""
"Can you establish whether any of those transfers came from our household accounts?""
"That's what I'm checking now.""
I thanked him and ended the call.
When I looked up, Maya stood beside the refrigerator holding a glass of water.
"Are we still going to Paris?""
I smiled gently.
"If that's what you want.""
She nodded.
"Can we see the Eiffel Tower at night?""
"Absolutely.""
"And eat those pastries that look like little clouds?""
"Those are probably macarons.""
"Then I want those.""
I laughed for the first time in what felt like days.
"Deal.""
She took a sip of water.
Then her expression grew serious.
"Will you still be there if I wake up and feel scared?""
I set my phone down.
"Every morning. Every night. Every time you need me.""
She leaned against me.
I kissed the top of her head.
And for a few seconds, the house felt like a home again.
That afternoon, Brianna came downstairs carrying a small notebook.
She placed it on the kitchen island.
"I think this might help.""
I opened it.
The first few pages contained school notes and shopping lists. Near the middle, Vanessa had written several dates and amounts beside Daniel's initials.
Brianna sat across from me.
"I found it in the pocket of her travel bag. I didn't take it to snoop. I was looking for my passport because she said she'd packed it.""
I looked through the entries.
The first payment was dated fourteen months earlier.
Twenty thousand dollars.
The second was ten thousand.
Then another twenty-five thousand.
The descriptions were vague: initial capital, recovery payment, travel investment.
At the bottom of the page, Vanessa had written a sentence.
Once the Paris deal closes, everything will be restored.
I looked at Brianna.
"Did your mother ever talk about losing money?""
She nodded.
"Last winter, she cried in her room. I asked what was wrong, and she said she'd made a mistake trusting someone.""
"Did she say who?""
"Daniel.""
I looked at the notebook again.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Brianna's eyes filled.
"She said it was a private problem between siblings. She told me if you found out, you'd think she was stupid for believing him.""
I closed the notebook.
"She should never have made you responsible for keeping that secret.""
Brianna rubbed her hands together.
"There's something else. I heard them arguing last month.""
"What did they say?""
"Uncle Daniel told Mom that the original money was gone. He said the only way to get it back was to finish the new deal.""
My stomach tightened.
"What new deal?""
"I don't know. But Mom said she couldn't ask you for more money because you'd want to see the paperwork.""
I sat very still.
Brianna continued.
"Daniel told her not to worry. He said there was another way.""
I looked toward the staircase.
Maya was upstairs, probably choosing which clothes to bring to Paris.
I felt a wave of anger so intense I had to stand up and walk to the window.
Vanessa had known the money was at risk.
She'd known Daniel's earlier investment had failed.
And rather than tell me the truth, she'd allowed him to reach into Maya's future to try to recover the loss.
I turned back toward Brianna.
"Thank you for telling me.""
She nodded.
"Are you going to confront Mom?""
"Not without Rachel. We need to preserve the evidence and let the bank trace the transactions.""
Brianna looked disappointed.
"But she'll just deny everything.""
"Then the records will matter even more.""
Rachel arrived an hour later to collect the notebook and photograph the relevant pages. She asked Brianna a series of careful questions about when she'd found it and whether anyone else had handled it.
Brianna answered honestly.
Rachel made copies, documented the information, and returned the original notebook to a sealed envelope for safekeeping.
"These notes may help establish a timeline," she explained.
"But we'll need to corroborate the entries with bank statements and other records.""
I nodded.
After she left, I went upstairs to check on Maya.
She was sitting cross-legged on her bedroom floor, surrounded by clothes.
Her suitcase lay open beside her.
"Dad, do you think Vanessa will be mad that we're going?""
I sat beside her.
"She may be upset. But you haven't done anything wrong.""
"What if she says I ruined Brianna's birthday?""
I took her hand.
"Then I'll remind her that you're not responsible for choices the adults made.""
Maya nodded.
She looked toward the open closet.
"I found something.""
She reached into a shoebox and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
It was a printed copy of an email she'd received from Vanessa two weeks earlier.
I read it slowly.
Sweetheart, I need you to be patient with me. There are some complicated financial arrangements happening, and your father must not be distracted until everything is settled. Please don't ask him about the college account. I'll explain when the time is right.
I looked at Maya.
"Did Vanessa send this to you?""
She nodded.
"She said she was trying to help me understand why I couldn't go on the trip.""
"Did she ask you to sign anything?""
Maya hesitated.
Then she reached into the shoebox again.
This time, she pulled out a second sheet.
It was a consent form, apparently intended to confirm that Maya had agreed to a temporary change in the management of her education account.
At the bottom was a signature.
Maya's name.
I stared at it.
"Did you sign this?""
"No.""
Her voice was barely audible.
"I told her I didn't understand it. She said it was just paperwork. When I wouldn't sign, she told me I was being ungrateful.""
I looked at the document carefully.
The signature was similar to Maya's handwriting, but the letters were unusually neat. There was no date beside it.
I took photographs and called Rachel.
She asked me not to write on the document or alter it in any way.
"We'll preserve it as you found it," she said.
"And we'll ask the bank whether this form was ever submitted.""
I thanked her.
Maya looked frightened.
"Am I in trouble?""
I turned toward her immediately.
"No, sweetheart. You did exactly the right thing by refusing to sign something you didn't understand.""
She pressed her lips together.
"Vanessa said I was making everything harder.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"You protected yourself. You should be proud of that.""
She held on to me.
After a moment, she whispered, "I think she wanted me to stop asking questions because she knew I would tell you.""
I looked down at the form in my hand.
That possibility made the entire situation feel even darker.
Vanessa hadn't merely excluded Maya from a vacation.
She'd tried to make her daughter feel guilty for asking about her own future. She'd attempted to move money without my authorization. And now there was a document bearing Maya's apparent signature that Maya insisted she hadn't written.
We needed to know whether it had been used.
At 5:16 p.m., Rachel called back.
"The bank has confirmed that the consent form was attached to the transfer request," she said.
"They haven't determined who created the signature, but the form was used to support the request.""
I closed my eyes.
"Can the transfer be reversed?""
"The investigation is ongoing. The receiving institution has been notified, but we don't yet know whether the funds can be recovered in full.""
"What's the next step?""
"We'll submit the document for independent examination and provide the bank with Maya's statement. We'll also ask for the complete transaction trail.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
Then I looked at Maya.
She was sitting on the edge of her bed, holding her rabbit.
"Was my name really on the paperwork?"" she asked.
"Yes.""
"But I didn't sign it.""
"I believe you.""
She searched my face.
"You do?""
"Absolutely.""
She began to cry again, but this time she didn't turn away.
I sat beside her and held her until her breathing slowed.
Downstairs, a car door slammed.
Then another.
I walked to the window.
Vanessa stood beside the driveway with Daniel. He was holding two suitcases, one burgundy and one black.
They weren't looking at the house.
They were looking at the road.
My phone rang.
An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke quickly.
"Is this Michael Reed?""
"Yes. Who is this?""
"My name is Elaine Porter. I work with a company that previously handled administrative records for Northstar Travel Consulting.""
I glanced toward the driveway.
"What do you want?""
"I saw your name connected to a document that's been circulating. I believe you need to know that Daniel has been trying to move money between several accounts.""
"Why are you telling me this?""
"Because I refused to process one of the requests, and now he's claiming I made an error.""
I gripped the phone.
"What request?""
She took a breath.
"The one involving your daughter's education fund was not the first. There was an earlier transfer that appears to have failed.""
I stared through the window at Daniel.
Elaine continued.
"And there's something else. The Paris trip isn't a holiday or a business conference. According to the documents I reviewed, it's connected to a private meeting with the person who originally funded Daniel's investment.""
My heart began pounding.
"Who funded it?""
Elaine paused.
Then she gave me a name I recognized immediately.
May you like
It belonged to someone I'd trusted with my business for nearly a decade.
And according to Elaine, that person had been expecting me to attend the meeting in Paris all along.
