Chapter 8: The Daughter They Tried to Use

I read Maya's name three times before I called Rachel.

"Why is my daughter listed as an attendee?""

Rachel was silent for a moment.

"That is one of the first things we need to clarify. The draft identifies her as a minor beneficiary, but it doesn't establish that anyone intended to bring her to the meeting.""

"Then why list her?""

"The document may have been prepared to support the proposed financial arrangement. We need the underlying correspondence to determine why her name was included.""

I looked at the screen.

There were four names.

Three adults who knew about the debt.

And a fifteen-year-old girl who had been told she wasn't invited on a vacation.

"Can the meeting go ahead without me?""

"Richard and Daniel can meet if they choose. But they cannot make you responsible for an obligation you never accepted merely by putting your name on a draft. We need to make sure the relevant institutions understand that you dispute the authorization.""

"Do that.""

"I already have. I'll send a formal notice to the lender and request preservation of the original documents.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

Then I walked to Maya's bedroom.

She was sitting at her desk, drawing a small Eiffel Tower in the corner of a notebook. Her suitcase was packed and waiting beside the door.

I sat on the edge of her bed.

"Sweetheart, I need to tell you something.""

She put down her pencil.

"Is it about Vanessa?""

"Yes. And Daniel.""

Her face tightened.

I explained that the proposed financial agreement contained her name, but that we were challenging the document and investigating how it had been prepared.

Maya stared at me.

"They put my name on something again?""

"It appears that way.""

"But I didn't agree to anything.""

"I know.""

"Why would they do that?""

I took a breath.

"We don't know yet. That's why we're getting help from the bank and the attorney.""

She looked down at her hands.

"Maybe they thought nobody would listen to me because I'm a kid.""

The words landed hard.

I moved closer.

"I will listen to you. Every time.""

"But you didn't listen before.""

I felt the truth of that settle between us.

She wasn't trying to hurt me.

She was telling me what it had felt like to be fifteen years old in a house where adults made decisions without asking her.

"You're right," I said.

"I should have noticed sooner. I can't change what happened, but I can make sure you don't have to handle this alone anymore.""

Maya nodded slowly.

Then she asked, "Can we still go to Paris?""

I smiled.

"Yes.""

"Even if everything isn't fixed?""

"Especially because everything isn't fixed. We can take a few days to breathe while Rachel handles the legal work. We'll keep our phones on, and we'll return if we're needed.""

She considered that.

Then she picked up her pencil again.

"Okay.""

I kissed her forehead.

When I returned downstairs, Vanessa was standing near the front door with her purse in her hand.

"I need to leave for a while," she said.

I looked at her.

"Where are you going?""

"To my sister's.""

"Have you spoken to Rachel?""

"No.""

"Then you should speak with her before doing anything involving the accounts or the property.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"I'm not a prisoner, Michael.""

"I haven't said you were. You're free to go. But the financial investigation will continue whether you're here or not.""

She glanced toward the stairs.

"Can I say goodbye to Maya?""

I considered it.

"Ask her. Don't pressure her.""

Vanessa went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen, listening to the quiet movements above me.

A few minutes later, I heard her voice.

"Maya, honey, I'm leaving for a little while.""

There was a pause.

"Okay," Maya replied.

"I love you.""

Another pause.

"I don't know what to say.""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"You don't have to say anything.""

I heard footsteps descending.

Vanessa came back down alone.

She stopped in front of me.

"I never wanted Maya to feel unwanted.""

"Then you should have treated her like she belonged.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I thought I was doing what I had to do for Brianna.""

"And what did you teach Brianna?""

Vanessa looked away.

"That she had to compete with Maya for love," I continued.

"That keeping secrets was normal. That money could fix mistakes.""

She flinched.

"I know.""

"I hope you do.""

She opened the front door.

Before leaving, she turned back.

"Michael, if I tell Rachel everything, will you ever forgive me?""

I couldn't give her the answer she wanted.

"I don't know.""

She nodded, accepting the uncertainty.

Then she left.

At seven the following morning, Maya and I arrived at the airport.

David had secured two seats to Paris, and my mother had insisted on driving us. She hugged Maya twice before letting go.

"Call me when you land," she said.

"I will, Grandma.""

"And eat something other than pastries.""

Maya smiled.

"No promises.""

My mother turned to me.

"Take care of her.""

"I will.""

She held my face between her hands.

"And take care of yourself, too. You can't fix everything in one day.""

I nodded.

We checked in and moved through security. For the first time in several days, Maya looked excited rather than frightened.

At the gate, she pressed her face against the window.

"Look at that plane, Dad.""

"I see it.""

"Do you think ours is bigger?""

"I hope so. You've packed enough clothes for three weeks.""

She laughed.

The sound made me realize how much I'd missed hearing her laugh without immediately wondering whether she was trying to hide something.

We boarded shortly afterward.

As the plane pushed away from the gate, Maya took my hand.

"Thank you for bringing me.""

I squeezed her fingers.

"Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me what happened.""

She rested her head against my shoulder.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel.

Michael, the lender has confirmed that the property application included a draft agreement identifying Maya as a beneficiary. We have requested the full submission record. Please call when you land.

A second message followed.

The bank has also identified a pending payment instruction connected to Northstar. The institution is reviewing it.

I stared at the screen.

The investigation was moving forward, but the money was still not fully accounted for.

I put my phone away.

For the first time in days, I chose to focus on the person sitting beside me.

Maya fell asleep before the plane reached cruising altitude.

I watched the clouds spread beneath us and thought about the promises I'd made when she was born.

I had promised to protect her.

I had promised to give her opportunities.

But I'd also promised to listen, and somewhere along the way, I'd allowed the appearance of a happy family to become more important than the truth.

I wasn't going to make that mistake again.

When we landed in Paris, Maya woke up with a smile.

"Are we really here?""

"We're really here.""

She looked out the window at the airport buildings, then turned toward me.

"Can we get croissants?""

I laughed.

"That's the first thing you want?""

"Obviously.""

We checked into our hotel that afternoon and walked along the Seine before dinner. Maya took photographs of everything: the bridges, the little bookstalls, the old buildings, and a street musician playing an accordion beneath a row of trees.

She looked lighter.

Not completely healed.

Not magically happy.

But free to enjoy something without wondering whether she'd been selfish for wanting it.

That evening, we sat at a small restaurant near the river.

Maya was halfway through a chocolate dessert when my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

"Tell me what's happened.""

"The bank has traced part of the money transferred from Maya's account. Some of it went to Northstar, and some appears to have been moved to a separate account. They're working with the receiving institution to determine whether the funds can be recovered.""

"What about the property application?""

"Still suspended. No loan has been issued, and no lien has been recorded.""

I exhaled.

"That's good.""

"It is. But I need to tell you something else. Elaine Porter has provided additional records from Northstar's administrative system.""

I sat straighter.

"What records?""

"An internal email chain. It suggests that Daniel intended to present you with the settlement agreement in Paris and persuade you to sign it in person.""

"Even though I'd already told him I never authorized the original document?""

"Yes.""

I looked across the table at Maya.

She was carefully arranging the pieces of her dessert with a spoon.

"What was the plan if I refused?""

Rachel hesitated.

"According to one email, Daniel believed Richard could pressure you through a separate business contract. We haven't verified the full context yet.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Is Richard involved in the forged authorization?""

"We don't know. His name appears in the investment records, but that alone doesn't establish that he knew the authorization was false. We'll need to examine his communications.""

I thanked her.

Before ending the call, Rachel added, "Michael, Elaine also found a draft itinerary for the Paris meeting. It lists a separate appointment at a private banking office. The appointment was scheduled immediately after the settlement discussion.""

"Whose appointment?""

"Daniel's.""

I felt the unease return.

"What was he planning to do there?""

"We don't know yet. The records don't explain the purpose.""

I ended the call.

Maya looked at me.

"More bad news?""

"More questions.""

She put down her spoon.

"Do we have to go home?""

"Not tonight.""

She nodded and returned to her dessert.

I watched her for a moment, then looked toward the river.

Paris had been supposed to be a simple trip. A father and daughter exploring a city together, eating pastries, taking photographs, and making memories.

Instead, I was sitting in a foreign country, trying to understand how someone had used my daughter's name in a financial agreement she had never seen.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from Richard Coleman.

Michael, I need to see you before you leave Paris. There is something about Daniel's original investment you have not been told.

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

The money wasn't lost in the failed business.

My stomach tightened.

A third message appeared.

Daniel transferred it to an account controlled by someone in your household.

I looked across the table at Maya.

She was smiling at a photograph she'd just taken of her dessert.

I put my phone facedown.

Whatever Richard had to say could wait until I had a safe, documented way to hear it.

But the message left me with a question I couldn't ignore.

May you like

If Daniel hadn't lost the original investment, then who had received the money?

And why had someone gone to such lengths to keep me from finding out?
