Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Had Been Hidden From Me

The next morning, Marcus and Daniel left Atlanta before sunrise.

They traveled in an unmarked vehicle with a private security driver.

Marcus wore a dark overcoat and carried the photograph of Camille in his inside pocket.

He had barely spoken during the drive.

Daniel eventually broke the silence.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“Our investigator found a connection between Eleanor and a private residential facility outside Savannah.””

“What kind of facility?””

“An assisted-living center that operates under a charitable trust.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would Eleanor be connected to that?””

“Because the trust received payments from one of your investment companies.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“How much?””

“Approximately $180,000 over four years.””

“Who lives there?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone registered under the name Claire Morgan.””

Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.

“Lily?””

“We haven't confirmed it.””

Marcus looked out the window.

“Get us there.””

The facility was a quiet two-story building surrounded by oak trees.

It didn't look like a hospital.

There were flower beds near the entrance, rocking chairs on the veranda, and a small fountain in the courtyard.

Daniel spoke to the administrator while Marcus waited.

A few minutes later, a woman approached.

She was in her early sixties, with short gray hair and a kind but guarded expression.

“Mr. Reed?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Margaret Lewis. I manage the residential program.””

Marcus stood.

“I'm looking for someone.””

“I know.””

She studied his face.

“There's something you should understand before we proceed.””

“What?””

“The woman you're looking for came here under a different name. She asked us not to disclose her identity unless certain conditions were met.””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

“Is she alive?””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

For twelve years, he had believed his daughter was dead.

Now a stranger was telling him she was alive.

“Can I see her?””

Margaret hesitated.

“She's frightened.””

“Of me?””

“Of what might happen if people discover where she is.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Please tell her I'm here.””

Margaret disappeared down the hallway.

Daniel stood beside Marcus.

Neither spoke.

A few minutes later, a door opened.

A young woman stepped into the corridor.

She was twenty-eight now.

Her dark hair fell just below her shoulders. Her face had matured, but her eyes were the same.

Marcus recognized her immediately.

“Lily?””

She stopped.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

Then she whispered, “Dad?””

Marcus took one step forward.

Lily covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

He reached for her.

She rushed into his arms.

Marcus held his daughter tightly, afraid that if he loosened his grip, she would disappear again.

“I thought you were dead,” he whispered.

Lily began sobbing.

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

“I know, Dad.””

“Why didn't you call me?””

She pulled back, holding his face between her hands.

“Because Mom said you wouldn't believe me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me you had chosen Eleanor.””

Marcus felt as though someone had struck him.

“Lily, I never knew you were alive.””

“I know that now.””

He looked at her face.

“Tell me what happened.””

They sat in a small sitting room.

Lily held a cup of tea but barely touched it.

Daniel sat nearby, taking notes.

“My parents separated emotionally long before the accident,” Lily began.

“Mom knew about Dad's business problems with Thomas. She discovered that he was moving money through companies connected to your brother.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“She tried. But Thomas had already convinced her that you were involved.””

Marcus frowned.

“That's impossible.””

“I know. But he showed her documents. Emails. Bank statements.””

“Were they fake?””

“Some were. Others had been altered.””

Lily looked down.

“Mom started investigating. Then she disappeared for several days.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“She came home frightened. She told me we needed to leave.””

“Where?””

“She wouldn't say.””

Lily paused.

“The night before the accident, she told me to stay with a family friend. She said she would come back for me the following morning.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“She never came.””

“No.””

Lily wiped her eyes.

“Two days later, Eleanor came to see me.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She told me Mom had died. She showed me photographs of the wreckage and said you were in the hospital.””

“Did you believe her?””

“At first.””

Lily swallowed.

“Then I received a phone call from Mom.””

Marcus stared.

“She was alive?””

“Yes. But she told me not to contact anyone. She said Thomas had people watching the house.””

“Why didn't she come to me?””

“Because she thought you were in danger.””

Marcus lowered his head.

His daughter continued.

“For years, Mom and I moved between safe houses. Eventually, she arranged for me to stay here under another name.””

“Where is she now?””

Lily looked at Daniel.

“She's in Savannah.””

Marcus stood.

“Where?””

“An old house near the river.””

“Why isn't she here?””

Lily hesitated.

“Because she's been trying to get evidence against Thomas and Eleanor.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Does she have documents?””

Lily nodded.

“Original recordings. Bank transfers. Medical records. And a letter from Robert Ellis.””

Marcus froze.

“Robert?””

“He contacted Mom before he died. He told her he had been paid to tamper with your vehicle.””

Marcus sat back down.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“She tried.””

Lily reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

Camille.

He opened it.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, then I've finally found a way to reach you.

I need you to understand something. I never stopped loving you. I never abandoned our daughter. I spent twelve years believing you were in danger, and every time I considered contacting you, someone made sure I knew what would happen if I did.

Eleanor didn't simply take your place in the family. She helped erase mine.

But there is one thing I still haven't told you.

The night of the accident, I wasn't hiding from Thomas.

I was hiding from someone much closer to you.

Marcus stopped reading.

He looked at Lily.

“Who?””

Lily shook her head.

“Mom won't tell me.””

Daniel examined the envelope.

“There's another page.””

Marcus turned it over.

A second note had been folded inside.

It contained an address and a date.

The date was three days before Marcus's accident.

Underneath it were four words:

*The original marriage certificate.*

Marcus frowned.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“I think your marriage to Eleanor may have been part of a larger deception.””

Before Marcus could ask what he meant, Margaret rushed into the room.

“Mr. Reed, I'm sorry to interrupt.””

Marcus stood.

“What happened?””

“Someone is outside asking for Lily.””

Daniel immediately moved toward the door.

“Who?””

Margaret swallowed.

“He says his name is Thomas Whitaker.””

Marcus turned toward his daughter.

Lily's face had gone completely white.

“No,” she whispered.

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“Stay behind me.””

Through the window, Thomas could be seen standing beside a black sedan.

He wasn't alone.

Eleanor was sitting in the passenger seat.

And in the back seat was a woman wearing a dark scarf.

Marcus couldn't see her face clearly.

But when she stepped out of the car, he recognized her.

Camille.

His first wife was standing outside the building.

Alive.

Thomas smiled and waved.

Then Eleanor opened the car door.

She walked toward the entrance carrying a small document folder.

“Marcus!”” she called.

Her voice echoed across the courtyard.

“We need to talk about our marriage.””

Daniel stepped beside him.

“Don't go outside.””

But Marcus was already moving toward the door.

Eleanor raised the folder.

“You've been lied to, Marcus. By everyone.””

She opened it.

Inside was a document bearing Marcus's signature.

And beneath it was a name he hadn't seen in twelve years.

Camille Reed.

Eleanor smiled coldly.

“Your first wife never divorced you.””

Then she looked at Camille.

“And neither of us was legally married to you.””

Marcus stared at the document.

For the first time, he understood that the conspiracy was bigger than stolen money, forged medical records, and a staged accident.

Someone had manipulated his entire family history.

And the person holding the key to that mystery was standing just a few feet away.

Camille stepped forward.

“Marcus,” she whispered, “there's something you need to know about the night we supposedly got divorced.””
