Chapter 9: The Marriage That Never Ended

Marcus stood in the courtyard, holding the document Eleanor had brought.

His eyes moved across the page.

It was a marriage certificate.

His name appeared at the top.

Camille's name appeared underneath.

But the date was wrong.

The document claimed they had married six months after the date of their actual wedding.

Marcus looked at Camille.

“What's this?””

Camille's eyes filled with tears.

“A forgery.””

Eleanor laughed.

“Of course she'd say that.””

Marcus turned toward his second wife.

“Why did you bring it?””

“Because you deserve to know the truth.””

“Then tell me.””

Eleanor opened the folder again.

She removed another document.

This one was a divorce decree.

It contained Marcus's signature.

Camille's signature.

And a court seal.

Marcus examined it.

“I never signed this.””

Eleanor smiled.

“You may not remember.””

“I remember every legal document I signed.””

“Then perhaps your memory isn't as reliable as you think.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, we have already identified several irregularities in the documents you submitted.””

Eleanor ignored him.

She looked at Marcus.

“Camille was never legally your wife when Lily was born.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

Camille shook her head.

“She's lying.””

Eleanor raised her voice.

“Then explain why the original marriage certificate disappeared.””

Camille looked directly at Marcus.

“Because Thomas stole it.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You've said enough already.””

Thomas looked irritated.

“Marcus, this is a family matter.””

“No. This is a criminal investigation.””

Thomas laughed.

“You really think you can threaten me?””

Daniel took out his phone.

“Everything happening here is being recorded.””

Thomas's smile faded.

Eleanor quickly turned toward him.

“You said the evidence was destroyed.””

Thomas glared at her.

“Shut up.””

Marcus heard the exchange.

He looked at Eleanor.

“Destroyed?””

She didn't answer.

Camille moved closer.

“Marcus, please. We need to get somewhere private.””

Marcus nodded.

Daniel arranged for security to escort them into the building.

Thomas attempted to follow.

But two officers who had been waiting nearby stepped between him and the entrance.

“Sir, we need you to remain here.””

Thomas stared at them.

“On whose authority?””

Daniel presented his identification.

“We've provided investigators with evidence concerning financial fraud, document forgery, and threats against Mr. Reed.””

Thomas looked toward Eleanor.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

The officers asked him to accompany them for questioning.

He reluctantly agreed.

Eleanor remained outside.

Before she was escorted away, she turned toward Marcus.

“You don't understand what you're doing.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I understand exactly what you did.””

She shook her head.

“No, Marcus. You don't.””

Then she said something that stopped him.

“Ask Camille who paid for Lily's disappearance.””

Inside the building, Camille sat opposite Marcus.

Lily sat beside her mother.

For several minutes, the three of them simply looked at one another.

Marcus finally reached across the table.

“Tell me everything.””

Camille nodded.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because I thought contacting you would put Lily in danger.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Camille continued.

“Before the accident, I discovered that Thomas had been stealing from your company. He was using shell companies to purchase properties and move money overseas.””

“I know about the transfers.””

“There was more. He had been using your identity to guarantee loans you never approved.””

Daniel opened his notebook.

“Do you have evidence?””

Camille nodded.

“Robert Ellis gave me copies of the original vehicle inspection reports. He also provided recordings of conversations with Thomas.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did Robert tell you?””

“He said Thomas approached him with an offer. He wanted Robert to arrange a mechanical failure that would cause an accident.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Did Robert know I was going to be driving?””

“Yes.””

“Why did he agree?””

“Thomas promised him money for his daughters' education. Robert had debts. He made a terrible decision.””

Camille paused.

“But when he realized the brakes had been tampered with beyond what he had agreed to, he tried to stop the plan.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Was Thomas responsible for the truck?””

“Yes.””

Daniel wrote something down.

Camille continued.

“Robert contacted me because he was afraid. He told me Thomas had someone inside the company helping him.””

“Who?””

Camille looked at Marcus.

“Eleanor.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“I know.””

“No,” Camille said quietly.

“You don't know everything.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small audio recorder.

“I kept this for twelve years.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Is it original?””

“Yes.””

Camille pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

Thomas.

“If Marcus loses the ability to manage the company, the trust takes control. Eleanor gets the properties, Vanessa gets her money, and I get the development portfolio.””

Another voice answered.

Eleanor.

“And Camille?””

Thomas laughed.

“She's already taken care of.””

Camille stopped the recording.

Marcus looked at her.

“What did he mean?””

Camille lowered her eyes.

“Thomas believed I had died.””

“But you hadn't.””

“No. He had arranged for someone to attack me on the night of the supposed accident. I escaped with injuries, but I managed to get away before they found me.””

Marcus stared.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“I tried.””

“And?””

“The officer I spoke to was connected to Thomas. He told me I would be arrested for fraud if I continued making accusations.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Do you remember his name?””

Camille nodded.

“Detective Raymond Cole.””

Daniel wrote it down.

Marcus felt sick.

“How did you survive?””

Camille looked at Lily.

“Your daughter saved my life.””

Marcus turned toward Lily.

She wiped her eyes.

“I was sixteen. Mom called me from a gas station outside the city. She told me to come alone.””

Lily continued.

“I took the money I had saved and met her. We stayed with a family friend for a few weeks. Then she arranged another identity for me.””

Marcus reached for his daughter's hand.

“Why didn't you come home?””

Lily's voice broke.

“Because Eleanor came looking for me.””

Marcus frowned.

“When?””

“Three weeks after the accident.””

Camille nodded.

“She told Lily that you were devastated and needed time to recover. Then she showed us a letter supposedly written by you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“What letter?””

Camille looked at him.

“It said you wanted nothing more to do with us.””

Marcus stood abruptly.

“I never wrote that.””

“I know.””

“Who forged it?””

“Eleanor.””

Daniel placed his pen down.

“Do you still have the letter?””

Camille nodded.

She reached into her handbag and produced an old envelope.

Marcus recognized the handwriting.

It looked like his.

But the signature wasn't quite right.

He examined the date.

It was two days after the accident.

He remembered that day.

He had been unconscious.

The letter was impossible.

Daniel photographed it.

“This is valuable evidence.””

Camille looked at Marcus.

“There is one more thing.””

Marcus slowly sat down.

“What?””

“Your first marriage was never dissolved. Eleanor knew that.””

Marcus stared at her.

“How?””

“Because she discovered that the divorce decree had been forged before you married her.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Then the second marriage may have been invalid.””

Camille nodded.

“Thomas arranged the paperwork. He used a corrupt attorney to make it appear that the divorce had been finalized.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“So Eleanor knew she wasn't legally my wife?””

“Yes.””

“And she still married me?””

Camille nodded.

“She wanted access to your estate.””

Marcus leaned back.

For eighteen years, he had believed he was building a family with Eleanor.

In reality, she had been building a claim against his assets.

Daniel placed the forged divorce decree beside the original marriage certificate.

“This could change everything.””

Marcus looked at Camille.

“Why did you come forward now?””

Camille hesitated.

“Because Thomas made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He believed Robert had destroyed the original evidence.””

She opened another folder.

Inside were photographs of bank transfers, vehicle inspections, and a signed statement from Robert Ellis.

But one document stood out.

It was a handwritten letter.

The date was three days before Robert's death.

Marcus began reading.

I cannot live with what I have done. Thomas told me the accident would only frighten Marcus. He said the brakes would be repaired before the car was used.

I now know the truth.

I was told to make sure Marcus never recovered. But someone changed the plan without telling me.

The person who gave the final instruction was not Thomas.

Marcus stopped.

He looked at Camille.

“Who?””

Camille shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Daniel examined the bottom of the page.

“There's a second signature.””

Marcus leaned forward.

It was a short handwritten name.

Not Eleanor.

Not Thomas.

Not Vanessa.

The name belonged to Dr. Samuel Carter.

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“Why would the doctor sign this?””

Camille looked at him.

“Because he wasn't just changing your medical records.””

Daniel carefully turned the page over.

There was another paragraph.

If anything happens to me, find the original hospital recording. The person who authorized the final decision is on that tape.

Marcus looked up.

“Where is it?””

Camille's voice became barely audible.

“Thomas has it.””

That evening, Daniel received a call from the investigating officers.

Thomas had agreed to cooperate.

But he had one condition.

He wanted to speak to Marcus privately.

Daniel immediately refused.

Then Thomas sent a photograph.

It showed the original hospital recording device sitting on a table.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

You want to know who gave the final order? Meet me at the old Reed property at midnight.

Marcus stared at the image.

Daniel shook his head.

“It's a trap.””

“I know.””

“Then we don't go.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

The recording device had a distinctive red label.

He recognized it.

It belonged to the hospital's emergency department.

And he remembered something Dr. Carter had said in his earlier recording.

The original assessment had been removed from the permanent medical records.

Perhaps the recording contained the missing evidence.

Daniel called the investigators.

They agreed to arrange a controlled meeting at the property.

But before the arrangements could be completed, Marcus received a video message from Thomas.

The screen showed a dimly lit room.

Thomas sat behind a desk.

His expression was calm.

“Marcus, I know you've been talking to Camille.””

He leaned closer.

“There's something she hasn't told you.””

Marcus watched without blinking.

Thomas smiled.

“Your first wife didn't disappear because of me.””

A pause.

“She disappeared because she discovered what Eleanor had done to your daughter.””

Marcus looked toward Lily.

She was standing in the doorway.

Her face had turned white.

Thomas continued.

“And if you want to know why Lily was hidden for twelve years, ask her what happened the night she was born.””

The video ended.

Marcus turned toward his daughter.

“Lily?””

She began crying.

“Dad, there's something Mom never told you.””

“What?””

Lily looked at Camille.

Then she whispered:

“I was never supposed to survive.””

Marcus stood.

“What does that mean?””

Camille covered her mouth.

Lily took a shaky breath.

“Eleanor wasn't just trying to steal your company. She had been trying to make sure I never inherited anything.””

She reached into her pocket and removed a small hospital bracelet.

It was old, yellowed with age.

On it were two names.

*Baby Reed — Twin A.*

Marcus stared.

“Twin A?””

Lily nodded.

“Dad, I had a twin brother.””

She looked down at the bracelet.

“And Eleanor told everyone he died.””

May you like

Then she raised her eyes.

“But I found out last year that he didn't.””
