Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Father's Name

“Olivia, please don't believe what you're about to hear.””
My mother's voice trembled.
I stood in my father's study, staring at the tablet in Richard's hands.
The recording had stopped.
But Margaret Cole's words continued echoing inside my head.
I'll make sure she never finds out who her real father is.
I looked at my mother.
“What did she mean?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Sweetheart, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She reached for my hand, but I stepped backward.
“Was my father not my father?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You are Daniel's daughter in every way that matters.””
“That's not what I asked.””
Richard quietly closed the study door.
My mother sat in the old leather chair beside my father's desk.
For several seconds, she stared at the photograph of Daniel and Thomas.
Then she began speaking.
“Twenty-nine years ago, before your father and I married, I was engaged to someone else.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Who?””
“Thomas Reed.””
The room went silent.
Richard lowered his notebook.
My mother continued.
“We were young. Thomas was charming, ambitious, and incredibly persuasive. He wanted to build a business empire.
I wanted a family. Eventually, I realized we wanted different things.””
“Then you left him?””
She nodded.
“I met Daniel shortly afterward. He was different. He didn't promise me a fortune.
He promised me a home. He made me laugh. He listened when I spoke.””
I looked at the photographs.
“And then?””
“Thomas couldn't accept that I'd moved on. He accused Daniel of stealing me. He told people that Daniel had deliberately destroyed their relationship.””
My mother wiped her eyes.
“When I discovered I was pregnant, I was terrified. I knew the dates could raise questions. Thomas had been trying to contact me again, and I didn't want him anywhere near my child.””
I stared at her.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“Thomas was my biological father.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
I gripped the edge of my father's desk.
“No.””
“Olivia—”
“No. You're telling me the man whose son I was about to marry is my biological father?””
She nodded.
I felt sick.
Marcus wasn't just the son of my father's former business partner.
He was the son of the man who had fathered me.
Which meant Marcus and I shared the same biological father.
The thought made my knees weak.
Richard immediately pulled out a chair.
“Miss Hayes, please sit down.””
I barely heard him.
“Did Dad know?””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel knew before we married. He knew you might be Thomas's child. But he loved you. He adopted you when you were two, and he raised you as his own.””
I looked at the photograph of my father holding me as a baby.
Every birthday.
Every school performance.
Every scraped knee.
Every night he sat beside my bed when I was sick.
That man had been my father.
Not because of blood.
Because he had chosen to be.
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he was afraid Thomas would try to take you.””
I shook my head.
“Thomas disappeared twenty years ago.””
My mother looked at Richard.
He slowly opened the original evidence folder.
“There's another possibility,” he said.
I turned toward him.
“What possibility?””
“The records indicate that Thomas may have continued communicating with your father long after his disappearance.””
He removed several letters.
They were dated across a period of fifteen years.
The earliest was sent six months after Thomas disappeared.
The latest was dated just three months before my father's death.
Every letter contained the same request.
*Tell Olivia the truth.*
My throat tightened.
“Why didn't Dad tell me?””
Richard examined the last envelope.
“Because each time Thomas contacted him, he also made threats.””
“What kind of threats?””
Richard opened the letter.
My father's handwriting appeared in the margin.
He knows where Eleanor lives. He knows Olivia's schedule. I cannot risk bringing him into their lives.
I looked at my mother.
“Was Thomas threatening us?””
“He wanted you,” she whispered.
“Why?””
“He said you were his daughter. He believed he had rights over you.””
Richard shook his head.
“Whatever his biological relationship, he had no automatic right to take you away from the family that raised you.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, rain slid down the glass.
For years, I'd believed my father had died leaving behind a complicated business.
Now I was discovering that he had spent decades protecting us from a man who had never truly left.
I turned back.
“Where is Thomas now?””
Richard looked at the letters.
“We don't know.””
Then he pointed toward the most recent envelope.
“However, this one was delivered through a private courier three months ago.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A gray-haired man standing outside a small seaside restaurant.
The photograph was recent.
Very recent.
On the back were six handwritten words.
*I'M READY TO MEET MY DAUGHTER.*
My phone vibrated.
An incoming message.
Unknown number.
*You have heard only Daniel's version. Ask Eleanor what happened after Thomas disappeared.*
I looked at my mother.
She was staring at my phone.
Her face had lost every trace of color.
“Mom?””
She pressed her lips together.
Then she whispered, “Thomas didn't disappear.””
I stepped closer.
“What?””
“He was arrested.””
Richard looked up sharply.
“By whom?””
My mother began crying.
“By Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did Dad say he helped him disappear?””
“Because Daniel arranged for Thomas to leave the country after the arrest. He thought it was the only way to protect you.””
Richard frowned.
“That doesn't make sense. There was no arrest record.””
My mother shook her head.
“Because it wasn't an official arrest. Daniel and Thomas had an agreement. They met privately. Something happened, and Daniel brought Thomas to our house.””
I felt cold.
“What happened?””
My mother looked at the photograph.
“Thomas was bleeding. He had been stabbed.””
Richard stood.
“Mrs. Hayes, you're saying Thomas was injured at the harbor?””
She nodded.
“Daniel said someone had attacked him. He wanted to call an ambulance, but Thomas refused. He kept saying someone would come back to finish the job.””
I looked at the photograph of Margaret Cole.
“Was Margaret there?””
My mother nodded.
“She was the one who arranged for Thomas to disappear.””
“Why?””
“Because she said she had proof that Thomas had committed financial crimes. She told Daniel that if he didn't cooperate, she would expose him too.””
I stared at the letters.
“And you knew she was Vanessa's grandmother?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know Vanessa was involved with Marcus?””
My mother shook her head.
“No. I didn't understand why she was so interested in our family until today.””
Richard's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“What do you mean the police have arrived?””
He looked at me.
“Miss Hayes, we need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Someone has filed a complaint alleging that your father falsified the original partnership records and concealed evidence connected to Thomas Reed's disappearance.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Who filed it?””
Richard hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Marcus Reed.””
My phone vibrated again.
This time, it was a video message.
The sender's profile picture showed a gray-haired man.
The man from the seaside photograph.
The message contained only one sentence.
*Your mother has lied to you about the night I disappeared. Ask her who was holding the knife.*
I slowly raised my eyes.
My mother was already crying.
And when I asked her the question, she didn't deny it.
“Mom, who stabbed Thomas Reed?””
She covered her face.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“I did.””
