Chapter 8: The Woman Who Held the Knife

For several seconds, I couldn't move.
My mother had just admitted to stabbing the man who was apparently my biological father.
Richard closed the curtains.
“Mrs. Hayes, we need to understand exactly what happened.””
My mother stared at her hands.
“I didn't mean to hurt him.””
I pulled a chair away from the desk.
“Start from the beginning.””
She took a shaky breath.
“Thomas came to our house that night because he wanted to see you.””
“Me?””
“You were nine years old. Daniel had taken you to your grandmother's house because he knew Thomas might come.””
I tried to picture it.
A little girl visiting her grandmother, unaware that two men were fighting over her existence.
“What did Thomas want?””
“He wanted Daniel to sign over the company. He said if Daniel refused, he would take you away and tell everyone the truth about your birth.””
My mother began crying harder.
“He told me I had stolen his daughter.””
I swallowed.
“Did he threaten you?””
“He pushed me against the kitchen counter. He said Daniel had no right to raise you.””
Richard leaned forward.
“What happened next?””
My mother looked toward the old fireplace.
“There was a knife on the counter. I picked it up because I was frightened. Thomas came toward me. I told him to stay away.””
Her voice broke.
“He grabbed my wrist. We struggled. The knife went into his side.””
I covered my mouth.
“Oh, Mom.””
“He fell. There was blood everywhere.””
Richard asked quietly, “Was he conscious?””
“Yes. He was still talking.””
“What did he say?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“He looked at me and said, 'You just made sure she'll never know who she belongs to.''”
I felt tears running down my cheeks.
“Then what?””
“Daniel came home. He found us. Thomas was still alive, but he was losing blood. Daniel wanted to call an ambulance.””
“Why didn't he?””
“Thomas begged him not to. He said Margaret had people watching the house. He said they would kill you if they discovered he was still alive.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Did Margaret actually have that kind of influence?””
My mother nodded.
“She controlled several people in the company. Thomas had told her about the financial transfers. She knew where the money had gone.””
I looked at the old photographs.
“Where did Dad take him?””
“An old private clinic outside the city. Daniel had a doctor he trusted. Thomas survived.””
I stared at her.
“So Thomas was alive this entire time?””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel arranged for him to leave the country. He believed Thomas would stay away from us.””
“And did he?””
“For years.””
Richard opened another folder.
“Until the recent letters.””
My mother nodded.
“Thomas began contacting Daniel again after Marcus started working with the company. Daniel was terrified that the two families would become connected.””
I remembered the video.
My father had said Marcus wasn't supposed to marry me.
He had known.
He had known exactly what could happen.
I stood and walked to the window.
“How did Marcus know?””
My mother didn't answer.
Richard did.
“Someone must have informed him about the biological relationship.””
I turned.
“Who?””
Richard looked at the photograph of Margaret.
“Possibly his grandmother.””
I stared at the name.
Margaret Cole.
The woman who had witnessed the confrontation.
The woman who had helped Thomas disappear.
The woman whose granddaughter had been standing behind my mother with scissors that morning.
Suddenly, Vanessa's behavior made a horrible kind of sense.
She hadn't just wanted to hurt my mother.
She'd wanted to humiliate her.
Perhaps she believed Eleanor was responsible for what happened to Thomas.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I declined the call.
He called again.
I declined it again.
Then a message appeared.
*Meet me alone. I have the complete recording. If you don't come, your mother will be arrested.*
Richard read the message.
“Don't respond.””
“He's threatening her.””
“He's trying to control the situation.””
My mother stood.
“Let me speak to him.””
“No,” I said.
“Olivia, I need to know what he's planning.””
“You've already been through enough.””
She took my hands.
“Daniel protected you for twenty-nine years. I won't let you destroy your life because of what happened before you were born.””
I looked into her eyes.
“You didn't destroy my life, Mom.””
She began crying.
“But I lied.””
“You protected me.””
Richard interrupted.
“I have a suggestion. We can use Marcus's demand to establish a controlled meeting. But you will not go alone.””
I nodded.
We contacted the trustees' attorney and arranged for a private meeting at the hotel conference center.
Marcus agreed to come.
He arrived forty minutes later.
His tuxedo was gone.
He wore a dark suit, and his hair was disheveled.
Vanessa followed him.
I hadn't expected her.
She stopped when she saw me.
“Olivia, I need to explain.””
I ignored her.
Marcus placed a black folder on the table.
“You wanted the truth. Here it is.””
Richard remained beside me.
“Before we begin, Mr. Reed, this meeting is being documented.””
Marcus laughed.
“Of course it is.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, medical records, and a copy of the private clinic's admission report.
The patient name was listed as Thomas Reed.
The admission date matched the night my mother had described.
I stared at the document.
“You have this because?””
“Because my father gave it to me.””
“Your father was in hiding.””
Marcus nodded.
“He lived under another name for years. My grandmother helped him.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your grandmother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Margaret raised me after my parents died. She told me the Hayes family had stolen everything from us.””
I sat back.
“Then why did you become my friend?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“At first, I wanted to know what your family was hiding.””
I stared at her.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Margaret told me to get close to you. She wanted information about the company.””
My chest tightened.
“So our friendship was a job?””
“Not entirely.””
“Don't.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I did care about you.””
“You cut my mother's hair.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
Marcus slammed his hand against the table.
“Can we focus?””
Richard looked at him.
“You requested this meeting. Proceed.””
Marcus removed a small memory card.
“My father recorded a conversation with Daniel before he left the country.””
He inserted it into a laptop.
A recording began.
My father's voice filled the room.
“Thomas, you cannot keep threatening Eleanor.””
A second voice answered.
“Then give me what belongs to me.””
“The company is not yours anymore.””
“You stole it.””
“I paid you what we agreed.””
“You paid me to disappear.””
The recording continued.
Then my father's voice became quieter.
“Thomas, I know what happened to the original accounts. I know you moved the money.””
Thomas laughed.
“You can't prove it.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
There was a long pause.
Then Thomas said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because I wasn't the one who moved the money.””
The recording ended.
I looked at Marcus.
“What does that mean?””
He leaned back.
“My father believed someone else was behind the theft.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Richard.
“Daniel.””
Richard shook his head.
“That accusation was investigated.””
“Not properly.””
Marcus pulled out another document.
It was an old company ledger.
Several transactions had been marked in red.
The transfers were approved using Daniel Hayes's authorization code.
My father had apparently moved money into a private account shortly before Thomas disappeared.
I stared at the figures.
“Why would he do that?””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Because he wanted control of the company.””
Richard examined the document.
“This is not an original.””
Marcus smiled.
“You're going to say everything is fake.””
“Because it may be.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Why did you need to marry me?””
His expression changed.
For the first time, the anger seemed to disappear.
He looked almost embarrassed.
“Because I needed access.””
“To my inheritance?””
“To the trust. Your father's voting shares were protected until you married or appointed a permanent successor.””
Richard immediately shook his head.
“That is incorrect.””
Marcus glared at him.
“My father told me.””
“Then your father misunderstood the trust structure. Marriage does not automatically transfer beneficial ownership.””
Marcus's face darkened.
“What?””
Richard opened his briefcase.
“The proposed agreement you submitted was invalid. It could not transfer the properties without Olivia's verified authorization and trustee approval.””
I looked at Marcus.
“So the wedding wouldn't have given you anything?””
His silence answered me.
Richard continued.
“You were attempting to obtain control through fraudulent documentation.””
Marcus stood abruptly.
“You don't know what Daniel promised my father!””
I remained seated.
“Then tell me.””
Marcus stared at me.
“My father was dying when he told me everything. He said Daniel had stolen his life. He said the only way to restore our family was to take back the company.””
“And you believed him?””
“Yes.””
“Enough to sleep with my best friend?””
He looked toward Vanessa.
She was crying.
Marcus continued.
“Vanessa was supposed to help me access the records. The affair wasn't part of the plan.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So she was useful until she became inconvenient.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Don't you dare blame me for everything!””
Marcus turned.
“You were the one who sent the photograph!””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You sent it?””
She nodded slowly.
“I sent it this morning.””
“Why?””
“Because I saw what Marcus had planned for you. He told me he was going to make you sign the agreement during the ceremony. He said afterward, you wouldn't be able to do anything.””
I stared at her.
“And cutting my mother's hair?””
She began sobbing.
“I wanted to make you angry enough to cancel the ceremony. I thought if you saw what I was doing, you'd stop everything before he could get you to sign.””
My mother looked at her in disbelief.
“You could have warned us.””
“I was afraid.””
“You could have called the police.””
“I know.””
I stood.
“You chose to hurt an innocent woman instead.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Yes.””
For the first time, she didn't offer an excuse.
Richard closed the folder.
“Mr. Reed, I think we're finished.””
Marcus reached for the memory card.
Richard moved it away.
“That's evidence now.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You think you've won?””
I held his gaze.
“I think I've finally stopped losing.””
He walked toward the door.
But before he left, he turned around.
“One more thing, Olivia. You should ask your mother why she never told Daniel about the letter Thomas sent before you were born.””
My mother froze.
Marcus smiled.
“He knew about your biological father. But he never knew why Thomas really left.””
Then he walked out.
I turned toward my mother.
“What letter?””
She didn't answer.
Richard looked at her.
“Eleanor?””
My mother began shaking.
Finally, she whispered:
“Thomas didn't leave because of Daniel.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why?””
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Because he discovered that Margaret Cole was not the only person stealing from the company.””
