Chapter 6: The Man at the Door

Nobody moved.
The knocking came again.
Three times.
Harder.
"Tasha! Don't make me come back tomorrow!""
Isaiah immediately moved behind Walter.
Jordan grabbed Ava's hand.
Tasha stood up so quickly that her phone fell onto the sofa.
Walter raised one hand.
"Everyone stay here.""
He walked toward the front door.
Daniel's voice came through the speaker.
"Dad, don't open it.""
Walter stopped.
"Why?""
"Because we don't know who this man is.""
The voice outside became louder.
"Tasha! I can hear you!""
Tasha covered her mouth.
Walter turned.
"Is this Marcus?""
She nodded.
Daniel's face tightened.
"Call the police if he's threatening you.""
Tasha shook her head.
"Please. Don't.""
Walter looked at her.
"Has he threatened the children?""
"No.""
"Then why are you afraid?""
She looked toward the door.
"Because I owe him money.""
Daniel replied, "That doesn't give him the right to threaten you.""
The man outside struck the door again.
"Friday, Tasha! I want every dollar!""
Walter took out his phone.
He didn't approach the door.
Instead, he called the local authorities and explained that a man was outside the house demanding money and refusing to leave.
While he waited, Daniel continued speaking.
"Dad, keep the children away from the entrance.""
Walter nodded.
"Jordan, Ava, take Isaiah upstairs.""
Jordan took her brother's hand.
"Come on.""
Isaiah didn't move.
He was staring at the front door.
"Grandpa?""
Walter crouched.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Is that the man who made Mommy cry?""
Walter froze.
Daniel heard him.
"What did he say?""
Walter looked at Isaiah.
"Has this man been here before?""
Isaiah nodded.
"Last Thursday.""
Tasha closed her eyes.
Walter asked gently, "What happened?""
Isaiah's voice became very small.
"He came inside.""
Daniel sat forward.
"What?""
Tasha immediately interrupted.
"He didn't do anything to him!""
Walter turned.
"Nobody said he did.""
Isaiah continued.
"He was shouting in the kitchen. Mommy was crying. Then he asked where the money was.""
Walter felt his stomach tighten.
"Did he see you?""
Isaiah nodded.
"He told me to go upstairs.""
"Did you?""
"Yes.""
The boy looked toward the door.
"Then Mommy gave him an envelope.""
Tasha's face drained of color.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"An envelope?""
Walter slowly stood.
"What envelope?""
Tasha looked away.
The knocking stopped.
A moment later, a phone vibrated on the coffee table.
It was Tasha's.
Another message appeared.
*Marcus: I know Daniel sent you more money. Don't pretend you have nothing.*
Walter read it.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Your son-in-law is demanding money from her.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"How much does she still owe?""
Tasha whispered, "Eleven thousand.""
"How much did you already pay?""
"Four thousand.""
"Where did you get the four thousand?""
Tasha didn't answer.
Daniel repeated the question.
"Where?""
Tasha looked at the shopping bags.
Then at the floor.
"From our savings.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Our savings?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Over the last few months.""
Daniel looked as if someone had struck him.
"We had savings for the children's future.""
"I know.""
"How much did you take?""
Tasha started crying.
"Almost everything.""
Walter slowly sat down.
"Daniel, did you know about this?""
"No.""
Tasha wiped her cheeks.
"I was going to replace it.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"That's what you said about the school money.""
The doorbell rang.
Everyone jumped.
Walter checked the camera display near the entrance.
A police officer was standing outside.
He opened the door only after confirming the officer's identity.
The man outside had moved toward the driveway.
Walter explained what had happened.
The officer spoke to Marcus and instructed him to leave the property. After a brief exchange, Marcus walked toward his vehicle.
Before getting inside, he pointed toward the house.
"Tell Tasha Friday is still Friday!""
The officer told him to leave.
Walter watched until the vehicle disappeared.
Then he closed the door.
The living room felt different now.
The children had come downstairs again.
Isaiah was holding Ava's hand.
Walter approached them.
"Everything is okay for now.""
Ava looked worried.
"Is Mommy in trouble?""
Walter glanced at Tasha.
"Mommy needs to make some things right.""
Jordan looked at her mother.
"Did you spend all the money?""
Tasha lowered her head.
Nobody answered.
Then Isaiah asked the question that broke the silence.
"Mommy, did you give my backpack money to that man?""
Tasha covered her face.
"Isaiah...""
"Is that why I couldn't get one?""
She began crying.
"Yes.""
The boy stared at her.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Tasha reached for him.
"Come here, baby.""
But Isaiah stepped backward.
Not far.
Just enough to avoid her hand.
Walter noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
Tasha lowered her arms.
"I made a mistake.""
Isaiah looked at his broken backpack.
"Was I not important?""
Tasha began shaking her head.
"No. No, sweetheart. You're important.""
"Then why did everybody get things except me?""
She had no answer.
Daniel spoke quietly through the phone.
"Tasha, I need you to listen.""
She looked toward the screen.
"I know you have problems. I know things may have gotten difficult. But you cannot keep hiding things from me, and you cannot make Isaiah feel like he has to earn basic necessities.""
Tasha nodded.
"I know.""
"Do you?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Yes.""
Daniel looked toward his father.
"Dad, can you take the children for tonight?""
Walter nodded.
"Of course.""
Tasha immediately looked up.
"You're taking my children?""
Walter shook his head.
"No. I'm giving them a quiet place to sleep while the adults figure this out.""
"I can take care of them.""
"Then show us.""
Daniel continued.
"I'm coming home tomorrow. Until then, Dad will make sure the children have everything they need.""
Tasha didn't argue.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Walter's phone rang.
It was Mrs. Collins.
He answered.
"Hello?""
"Mr. Walter, I'm sorry to call so late.""
"Is everything okay?""
"Not exactly. I just received a message from Isaiah's school office.""
Walter frowned.
"What message?""
"The school account has been flagged.""
"Flagged for what?""
"An outstanding balance.""
Walter looked at Tasha.
"What balance?""
Mrs. Collins hesitated.
"The school records show that Isaiah's lunch account and activity fees haven't been paid for several months.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"How much?""
Mrs. Collins checked.
"Four hundred and eighty dollars.""
Walter stared at the phone.
"Four hundred and eighty?""
"Yes. And there's another issue. Someone contacted the school today requesting a transfer of Isaiah's records.""
Walter's expression changed.
"A transfer?""
"Yes. The request was submitted this afternoon.""
Daniel sat forward.
"Who submitted it?""
Mrs. Collins answered.
"The request lists Isaiah's mother as the person responsible.""
Walter turned toward Tasha.
"Did you try to transfer him?""
Tasha's eyes widened.
"I was going to explain.""
Daniel's voice became cold.
"Explain what?""
Tasha stood.
"I found another school. It's cheaper.""
Walter stared at her.
"Without telling his father?""
"I was trying to solve the problem!""
Daniel interrupted.
"Why would you move him to another school without discussing it with me?""
"Because I couldn't keep paying for everything!""
Walter shook his head.
"You couldn't keep paying for school, but you could buy designer shoes?""
Tasha looked away.
Daniel's voice softened.
"Which school?""
Tasha whispered the name.
Walter recognized it.
It was a small private school on the other side of town.
"Why that school?""
She hesitated.
"Because Mason goes there.""
Walter frowned.
"Your nephew?""
Tasha nodded.
"His mother said they could arrange a discount.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Why would Mason's school give Isaiah a discount?""
Tasha's phone vibrated.
She glanced down.
A new message appeared.
It was from Denise, her sister.
*Denise: Please don't tell Daniel about the school arrangement. He'll ruin everything.*
Walter saw the message.
Before Tasha could hide the screen, another notification appeared.
*Denise: Mason needs Isaiah's place. You promised me.*
Walter slowly raised his eyes.
"Isaiah's place?""
Tasha's face went white.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
"What does that mean?""
She began shaking her head.
"It's not what you think.""
Walter took a step closer.
"Then tell us exactly what it means.""
Tasha looked toward the staircase.
Then she whispered:
"Denise wanted Mason to attend Isaiah's school. She said if I moved Isaiah somewhere cheaper, she could use his place.""
Daniel stared at the screen.
"Use his place?""
Tasha nodded.
"She said she would pay me back.""
Walter felt a chill run through him.
"Did you agree?""
Tasha couldn't look at him.
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
"Tasha, did you sell our son's school place to your sister?""
And before she could answer, Walter's phone received another message from Mrs. Collins.
It contained a photograph of the transfer request.
At the bottom was a signature.
Walter enlarged it.
Then his face changed.
The signature wasn't Tasha's.
It belonged to Daniel.
But Daniel was still thousands of miles away.
He stared at the photograph.
"I didn't sign that.""
Walter looked at Tasha.
And suddenly, the money, the debt, the missing supplies, and the secret school transfer seemed connected by something far more serious than a family argument.
May you like
Because somebody had forged the father's signature.
And Tasha was no longer the only person who had something to hide.
