Chapter 7: The Signature That Exposed Everything

"I didn't sign that.""
Daniel's voice came through the phone, sharp and unmistakable.
Walter enlarged the photograph Mrs. Collins had sent.
There it was.
A school transfer request bearing Daniel's full name, his signature, and a date from the previous week.
But Daniel was hundreds of miles away when the document had supposedly been signed.
Walter looked at Tasha.
"Who signed this?""
Tasha shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel stared at the screen.
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not lying!""
"Someone used my name to remove my son from his school. Someone signed a document pretending to be me. And you expect me to believe you know nothing?""
Tasha sat down.
"I didn't forge your signature.""
"Then who did?""
She covered her face.
"I only filled out the paperwork.""
Walter's expression hardened.
"Who signed it?""
Tasha whispered something.
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
"What?""
"Denise.""
Walter slowly lowered the phone.
"Your sister?""
Tasha nodded.
"She said she could handle the school transfer. She works in an office. She knows how to complete paperwork.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Did she have permission to sign my name?""
"No.""
"Then why did you allow it?""
"Because I was desperate!""
Walter placed the phone on the table.
"Desperate enough to take away your son's school place?""
Tasha began crying.
"Denise promised me she would help. She said Mason needed a better school, and she couldn't afford the fees. She told me Isaiah could go somewhere cheaper.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Why would you sacrifice one child for another?""
"Because she was my sister!""
"And Isaiah is your son!""
The words echoed through the room.
For several seconds, Tasha couldn't respond.
Then Daniel asked another question.
"How much did Denise promise you?""
Tasha wiped her face.
"She said she would give me two thousand dollars.""
Walter stared at her.
"Two thousand dollars for your son's school place?""
"She said it would help me pay Marcus.""
Daniel let out a long breath.
"So you were going to move Isaiah to another school, give his place to Mason, and use the money to pay a debt you never told me about.""
Tasha looked down.
"I thought it would solve everything.""
Walter shook his head.
"You weren't solving anything. You were making your son pay for your decisions.""
A small voice came from the staircase.
"Mommy?""
Everyone turned.
Isaiah stood there.
He had heard enough.
He was holding the camouflage backpack against his chest.
Tasha immediately stood.
"Isaiah, sweetheart, you should be upstairs.""
"Am I changing schools?""
Tasha froze.
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
"Buddy, come closer.""
Isaiah approached slowly.
"Yes, Dad?""
"Nobody is sending you anywhere without talking to you and making sure you're okay.""
Isaiah looked at his mother.
"Did you give my school to Mason?""
Tasha's eyes filled.
"I was trying to help Aunt Denise.""
"But I like my school.""
"I know.""
"I like Mrs. Collins.""
"I know, baby.""
"Then why?""
Tasha opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Isaiah looked down at his backpack.
"Did I do something bad?""
Walter immediately walked toward him.
"No.""
"Did I make you angry?""
"No, sweetheart.""
"Then why does everybody keep moving my things?""
Walter knelt and held his shoulders.
"Listen to me. You are not the problem. Not your school, not your backpack, not your books. None of this is your fault.""
Isaiah began crying.
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Buddy, I need you to believe me. You're staying at your school. I'm going to make sure of it.""
Isaiah nodded, but he still looked frightened.
Then Tasha did something unexpected.
She walked toward him and knelt.
"Isaiah, I'm sorry.""
The little boy looked at her.
"I shouldn't have made you feel like you didn't matter.""
He didn't answer.
Tasha continued.
"I made some very bad decisions.""
Isaiah wiped his cheek.
"Can I still go to football?""
Tasha closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Even though you don't have the money?""
Daniel answered immediately.
"I have the money, buddy.""
Isaiah looked at the phone.
"Really?""
"Really.""
Walter gently took the broken backpack from Isaiah.
"Tomorrow, we'll get you a new one.""
Isaiah nodded.
But his next question made the adults exchange uncomfortable looks.
"Can we get one for Ava and Jordan too?""
Walter smiled sadly.
"They already have theirs, sweetheart.""
"I know. I just don't want them to feel bad.""
Jordan, who had been standing near the stairs, suddenly walked over.
She hugged her little brother.
"We don't feel bad about having new backpacks," she whispered.
"We feel bad that you didn't get one.""
Ava joined them.
"And we're not giving our brother away.""
For the first time that evening, Isaiah smiled.
Tasha watched her children embrace.
She began crying again.
But Walter had more questions.
He stood and picked up the transfer form.
"Daniel, I think we need to speak with Denise.""
Daniel nodded.
"Call her.""
Tasha quickly stood.
"No. Please don't involve her.""
Walter looked at her.
"She already involved herself when she signed another man's name.""
"She's my sister.""
"And Isaiah is your son.""
Daniel spoke firmly.
"Dad, call her. I want to hear this directly.""
Walter dialed the number displayed in Tasha's message.
It rang.
Then Denise answered.
"Hello?""
Walter put the call on speaker.
"Denise, this is Walter.""
There was a pause.
"Hi, Walter. What's going on?""
"We have a question about Isaiah's school transfer.""
Her voice immediately changed.
"Why are you asking me?""
"Because your name is connected to the paperwork.""
Denise laughed nervously.
"I was only helping Tasha.""
Daniel interrupted.
"This is Daniel.""
Silence.
Then Denise said, "Oh. Hi, Daniel.""
"Did you sign my name on my son's transfer request?""
She hesitated.
"I had Tasha's permission.""
"That wasn't my question.""
"I was helping her.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
Denise exhaled.
"I copied it from an old document. It was just paperwork.""
Walter's jaw tightened.
"Just paperwork?""
"Nobody was getting hurt. Isaiah was going to another school anyway.""
Daniel's voice became cold.
"Who told you that?""
"Tasha.""
Daniel looked at his wife.
Tasha lowered her head.
Denise continued.
"Look, Mason needed the place. The school had a waiting list, and I knew Isaiah wasn't going to stay there.""
Walter interrupted.
"How did you know?""
"Because Tasha told me.""
Daniel asked, "Did you promise her two thousand dollars?""
Denise went quiet.
Then she said, "I was going to help her.""
"With money?""
"Yes.""
"Did you pay her?""
"No.""
Tasha suddenly spoke.
"You said you would!""
Denise sighed.
"Because you kept changing the arrangement!""
"What arrangement?"" Daniel demanded.
Neither woman answered.
Walter looked between them.
"What exactly did you agree to?""
Denise finally said:
"Tasha was going to withdraw Isaiah. Mason would take his place. I would pay her two thousand dollars after his enrollment was confirmed.""
Daniel stared at the phone.
"And where was Isaiah supposed to go?""
"Another school.""
"Which one?""
Denise gave the name.
Daniel shook his head.
"That's a school almost forty minutes away.""
"It's cheaper.""
"Does Isaiah even have transportation?""
Denise hesitated.
"I don't know.""
"Does he know anyone there?""
"No.""
"Did anybody ask him?""
Silence.
Daniel leaned back.
"That's enough.""
Denise became defensive.
"You're making me sound terrible. I'm trying to help my son.""
"And I'm trying to protect mine.""
The call ended.
Walter placed the phone down.
Tasha stood motionless.
Then another message appeared on her screen.
*Denise: You need to stop talking. If Daniel finds out about the second agreement, we're both finished.*
Walter saw it.
So did Daniel.
"The second agreement?"" Daniel repeated.
Tasha snatched up her phone.
Walter stared at her.
"What second agreement?""
She began shaking her head.
"Nothing.""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Tasha, what else have you done?""
She didn't answer.
Then Walter's phone rang.
Mrs. Collins again.
He answered.
"Hello?""
"Mr. Walter, I'm sorry. I found another document in Isaiah's student file.""
"What document?""
"A request to change the emergency contact and authorized pickup information.""
Walter frowned.
"Who requested that?""
"The form lists Denise as the person authorized to collect Isaiah.""
Walter looked at Tasha.
"Why?""
Mrs. Collins continued.
"And there's something else. The form also requests that Isaiah's father be removed from the primary contact list.""
Daniel sat upright.
"What?""
Walter looked at the document.
There was a signature beneath the request.
This time, it wasn't Daniel's.
It was Tasha's.
And the date was yesterday.
Walter slowly raised his eyes.
"Tasha, why were you removing Daniel from his son's school records?""
She whispered:
"Because Denise said she needed to be able to take Isaiah without questions.""
Daniel's face went completely still.
"Take him where?""
Tasha began crying.
"I didn't know she was planning to do anything bad.""
Walter stepped closer.
"Then what did you agree to?""
Tasha looked at Daniel.
And finally admitted:
"Denise wanted Isaiah to stay with her for a few weeks while Mason started school.""
Daniel stared at the screen.
"A few weeks?""
Tasha nodded.
"She said it would make the school transfer easier.""
Walter's voice became almost a whisper.
"Did you agree to send your son to live with her?""
Tasha couldn't answer.
And Daniel suddenly understood why his wife had been so determined to keep the teacher, the grandfather, and him from speaking directly.
This wasn't just about money anymore.
May you like
Someone had been arranging to take Isaiah away from the people who were supposed to protect him.
And they had done it without his father's knowledge.
