Chapter 6: The Runway Was Never Brianna's

At 5:40 p.m., the Bellamy convention center looked like a palace.

Gold lighting illuminated the entrance. Photographers lined the red carpet. Luxury cars delivered guests in designer suits and evening gowns.

Inside, a massive runway stretched beneath a ceiling of suspended crystal lights.

The stage was washed in blue.

Rows of white seats filled with fashion executives, magazine editors, influencers, and wealthy sponsors.

A giant screen displayed the names of the evening's featured designers.

Brianna Carter's name appeared in the final presentation slot.

Nia stood backstage, looking at the screen.

She had changed nothing about her appearance.

Her lavender sweater was still slightly wrinkled from the long day. Her dark skirt had a small thread near the hem. Her natural curls framed her face.

She looked nothing like the glamorous designers surrounding her.

But she no longer cared.

The turquoise gown hung in the secure dressing area.

Its missing embroidery had been carefully documented. The ultraviolet inspection had confirmed the surviving signature. The committee had agreed to allow the garment to appear on the runway while ownership remained under review.

Daniel approached with a clipboard.

"Nia, we need to discuss the presentation.""

She turned.

"What about it?""

"Brianna is scheduled to introduce the gown.""

Nia looked at him.

"Why?""

"The committee wants to avoid a last-minute change that could disrupt the program.""

"So she's still presenting my design?""

"Only as a provisional presenter. No ownership decision will be announced until the verification is complete.""

Nia shook her head.

"That's convenient.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"I understand. But I want you to know that the committee is taking your evidence seriously.""

"Then why am I standing backstage while she gets the microphone?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he said, "Because I haven't forgotten that this is a public event. And because sometimes the truth needs to be demonstrated, not merely announced.""

Nia studied him.

"What are you planning?""

Daniel smiled slightly.

"Nothing without your permission.""

He handed her a document.

It was a temporary presentation authorization.

If Nia signed, the committee could conduct the final ultraviolet reveal during the live presentation.

She read the terms.

The garment would be shown under controlled lighting.

The registered design signature would be displayed.

The original designer would be invited to explain the construction.

Nia looked up.

"You want me onstage?""

"If you agree.""

She glanced toward the runway.

For years, she had imagined standing in front of an audience like this.

She had pictured herself presenting her collection, explaining her inspiration, and watching people react to something she had created.

But she had never imagined her first major appearance would happen because her own family tried to steal her work.

Nia signed.

Daniel took the paper.

"Thank you.""

Then he added quietly, "One more thing. The committee received a call from a lawyer representing your father’s estate.""

Nia frowned.

"What did they say?""

"They confirmed that the original business rights are still active. Evelyn Brooks has sent us the archive documents.""

Nia felt her pulse quicken.

"So the rights are mine?""

"Subject to final legal confirmation, yes.""

She nodded slowly.

"Good.""

A sudden commotion came from the dressing room.

Brianna entered wearing a champagne-colored gown with a dramatic neckline.

Her hair was styled in polished waves, and diamond earrings glittered beneath the backstage lights.

Vanessa followed her.

When Brianna saw Nia, she stopped.

"Still here?""

Nia looked at the turquoise gown.

"Yes.""

Brianna laughed.

"You're really determined to embarrass yourself tonight.""

Vanessa approached.

"Nia, can we talk?""

Nia crossed her arms.

"We've talked.""

"Not properly.""

"Then say what you came to say.""

Vanessa glanced toward Daniel.

"Could we have a moment alone?""

Daniel looked at Nia.

She nodded.

He stepped away.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"You're going too far.""

Nia almost smiled.

"That's what you said yesterday.""

"Do you understand what will happen if you expose your sister publicly?""

"She'll have to explain why she claimed my design.""

"She'll lose opportunities.""

"She shouldn't have stolen them.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're destroying everything I've worked for.""

Nia stared at her.

"Everything you've worked for?""

"Yes. Do you think it was easy raising two daughters alone?""

Nia felt something inside her crack.

"You weren't alone, Mom. I was there.""

Vanessa looked away.

"You don't understand the sacrifices.""

"I understand that I worked through school. I understand that I repaired clothes for strangers to pay for fabric. I understand that when Dad died, I had to learn how to keep his machines running because you wanted to sell everything.""

"Don't rewrite history.""

"I'm not. I'm finally telling it.""

Brianna stepped closer.

"Can we stop pretending Nia is some kind of victim?""

Nia turned toward her.

Brianna gestured at the gown.

"She made a dress. That's all. Designers have assistants.

They collaborate. She helped me.""

"Then why did you tell the committee you made every stitch?""

Brianna rolled her eyes.

"Because that's how the industry works.""

"No. That's how you work.""

Brianna's expression changed.

"Listen, you little—"

Vanessa interrupted.

"Enough!""

She turned toward Nia.

"Withdraw your claim. Tonight. We can settle this privately.""

Nia shook her head.

"No.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"I am your mother.""

"And I'm your daughter.""

"Then act like it.""

Nia stepped closer.

"Being your daughter doesn't mean I have to let you hurt me.""

For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to respond.

Then she looked at the gown.

"You have no idea how much money and influence Brianna has behind her. People are expecting her to succeed tonight.""

Nia followed her gaze.

"Then she should have designed something herself.""

Brianna grabbed Vanessa's arm.

"Mom, let's go. She's not worth it.""

As they turned, Brianna glanced back.

"Enjoy your little moment, Nia. It won't last.""

She disappeared into the dressing area.

Nia watched her go.

Then she heard a voice behind her.

"Are you all right?""

It was a young model wearing a simple black robe.

She had dark skin, a graceful posture, and a calm expression.

"I'm Maya," she said.

"I'm scheduled to wear the turquoise gown.""

Nia looked at her.

"You're wearing it?""

Maya nodded.

"I was told it was Brianna's design.""

Nia hesitated.

Then she smiled faintly.

"That's what everyone was told.""

Maya looked at the gown.

"I heard some of the backstage conversation.""

Nia lowered her voice.

"Then you know the situation.""

"I do.""

Maya studied the garment.

"It's beautiful. Who actually made it?""

Nia touched the shoulder seam.

"I did.""

Maya smiled.

"Then I'd be honored to wear it.""

Something about the simplicity of that sentence nearly brought Nia to tears.

She had spent so long trying to convince her own family that her work mattered.

A stranger had believed her without needing a stack of documents.

"Thank you," Nia whispered.

Maya looked at the gown.

"There's something I wanted to ask.""

"What's that?""

"Will the back reveal work under the runway lighting?""

Nia nodded.

"If they follow the lighting sequence.""

Maya smiled.

"Then let's make sure they do.""

At 7:15 p.m., the show began.

The audience applauded as the first models walked onto the runway.

Music filled the convention center.

Designer introductions appeared on the giant screen.

Nia stood behind the curtain, watching through a narrow opening.

Her heart pounded.

She saw Brianna sitting in the front row beside Vanessa.

Harold Whitmore occupied the seat beside them.

All three looked relaxed.

Brianna whispered something to Vanessa.

They laughed.

Nia looked away.

Daniel approached.

"Five minutes.""

She nodded.

"Is everything ready?""

"The lighting team has confirmed the ultraviolet sequence.""

"And the screen?""

"Ready.""

Nia looked toward the stage.

"Then let's do it.""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's one complication.""

Nia turned.

"What?""

"The presentation order has changed.""

"How?""

"Brianna requested to move her segment forward.""

Nia frowned.

"Why?""

"She says she has a personal announcement.""

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

"What kind of announcement?""

Daniel handed her a printed statement.

Nia read it.

The headline read:

*BRIANNA CARTER ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF CARTER ATELIER — A NEW LUXURY FASHION HOUSE.*

Below it was a photograph of the turquoise gown.

And underneath the photograph was a sentence:

The signature piece of the new collection will be unveiled tonight.

Nia stared.

"She's launching a business using my father's name?""

Daniel nodded.

"She has already sent invitations to potential investors.""

Nia looked toward the front row.

Vanessa was smiling.

Brianna was speaking with a group of buyers.

Nia suddenly understood the scale of what they had planned.

They weren't merely trying to steal a dress.

They were preparing to sell an entire identity.

Her father's craftsmanship.

His registered techniques.

His business name.

And her work.

All under Brianna's name.

Nia handed the statement back.

"Then tonight has to be very clear.""

Daniel nodded.

"It will be.""

Backstage, Maya entered the dressing room.

Two stylists carefully helped her into the turquoise gown.

Nia adjusted the bodice.

She checked the hidden fastenings.

Then she examined the train.

The missing embroidery remained visible beneath the lining, but the ultraviolet signature was intact.

Maya looked at her in the mirror.

"How do I walk?""

Nia smiled.

"Like you own the room.""

Maya laughed.

"I can do that.""

Nia stepped back.

The gown transformed Maya's silhouette.

The turquoise fabric caught the light. The crystals shimmered. The train flowed behind her like a wave.

For a moment, Nia forgot everything.

She saw only the design.

Her design.

Her father's teachings.

Her own hands.

Then the stage manager called.

"Thirty seconds!""

Maya took a deep breath.

Nia reached for her hand.

"Whatever happens, remember that you're not just wearing a dress.""

Maya smiled.

"You're telling a story.""

Nia nodded.

"Exactly.""

The music changed.

A spotlight swept across the stage.

The host stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our next featured presentation comes from one of the most exciting emerging talents in American fashion.""

Nia looked toward the front row.

Brianna stood.

She smoothed her champagne gown and adjusted her earrings.

The host continued.

"Please welcome Brianna Carter, presenting her latest original creation!""

Applause erupted.

Brianna walked toward the stage.

She took the microphone.

"Thank you. This collection represents everything I believe fashion should be: confidence, individuality, and the courage to create something extraordinary.""

Nia watched from behind the curtain.

Brianna smiled at the audience.

"The gown you're about to see took months of dedication. Every detail reflects my personal journey as a designer.""

Vanessa applauded.

Harold nodded approvingly.

Brianna turned toward the runway entrance.

"Please welcome my final creation.""

The music began.

Maya stepped into the light.

The audience fell silent.

The turquoise gown shimmered beneath the blue runway lights.

Maya walked confidently, one hand lightly holding the side of the skirt.

The train swept behind her.

The crowd began applauding.

Brianna smiled.

She turned toward Vanessa and whispered, "It's perfect.""

But Nia wasn't watching Brianna.

She was watching the lighting technician.

The ultraviolet sequence was scheduled to begin after Maya's first turn.

The model reached the end of the runway.

She paused.

Then turned.

The music softened.

The train spread across the floor.

And the lights changed.

Ultraviolet blue flooded the stage.

The hidden silver stitching began to glow.

At first, it looked like a delicate constellation.

Then the letters emerged.

Huge.

Bright.

Impossible to miss.

*NIA CARTER.*

The audience gasped.

A photographer dropped his camera slightly.

Someone in the front row stood.

Brianna's smile disappeared.

Vanessa's hands froze halfway through an applause.

The host looked toward the screen.

Daniel stepped onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have an important clarification regarding this presentation.""

Brianna grabbed the microphone.

"Excuse me. That's a technical effect. It doesn't prove anything.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Actually, it does.""

The screen changed.

An original sketch appeared.

Then a dated submission record.

Then photographs showing Nia's hands constructing the gown.

The host looked toward the audience.

"The registered designer of this garment is Ms. Nia Carter.""

A wave of whispers spread through the room.

Brianna shook her head.

"No. That's not true.""

Vanessa stood.

"Daniel, this is inappropriate!""

But Daniel continued.

"The Carter Signature Stitch has been independently verified. The original registration identifies Nia Carter as the authorized rights holder.""

The audience began applauding.

Not politely.

Loudly.

Maya turned toward the back of the runway.

She raised her chin.

And continued walking.

Nia stood behind the curtain.

Her eyes filled.

Then the host said something that made her heart stop.

"Ms. Carter, would you please join us onstage?""

The spotlight moved toward the wings.

Nia looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

She took one step forward.

Then another.

As she walked onto the runway, the crowd rose.

The applause grew louder.

Brianna stood frozen beside the host.

Nia reached the center of the stage.

The turquoise gown shimmered behind her.

She looked at the audience.

Then at her sister.

Then at her mother.

"Thank you," Nia said into the microphone.

Her voice trembled slightly.

"For eleven months, I worked on this gown in a room where nobody believed my work deserved a name.""

The audience became quiet.

"I was told that my job was to make things beautiful for other people. That my place was behind the scenes. That I should be grateful whenever someone allowed me to participate in their success.""

She paused.

Then she looked directly at Brianna.

"But the truth is, I never needed anyone to give me permission to be a designer.""

The audience applauded again.

Nia turned toward the gown.

"Every crystal was placed by my hands. Every seam was drafted from my original pattern. And every hidden stitch carries the signature of the person who created it.""

She raised her head.

"Every thread knows its designer.""

The words echoed through the room.

Then the ultraviolet lights intensified.

A second sequence illuminated the front of the gown.

Across the turquoise bodice, the crystals formed another glowing signature.

*NIA CARTER.*

The audience erupted.

But Nia wasn't finished.

She looked at the host.

"May I make one final announcement?""

He handed her the microphone.

Nia reached into her portfolio.

She removed a sealed document.

"My father's original design archive has now been verified. And under the terms of his registered agreement, the Carter Custom Designs trademark and protected collection rights are being returned to their rightful beneficiary.""

The giant screen changed again.

A new image appeared.

The original Carter Custom Designs logo.

Then a photograph of Richard Carter standing outside his old shop.

Nia looked at it.

Her voice softened.

"My father taught me that a name is not valuable because people recognize it. It's valuable because of the work and integrity behind it.""

She swallowed.

"I hope I can make him proud.""

The audience stood.

Maya walked toward her.

Nia placed one hand on the model's shoulder.

Together, they faced the cameras.

For the first time in years, Nia didn't feel invisible.

Then a voice interrupted the applause.

"THIS IS A FRAUD!""

Vanessa stood near the front row.

Her magenta satin dress caught the spotlight as she pointed toward the stage.

"That woman has no right to use our family name!""

The audience fell silent.

Nia turned.

Vanessa stepped into the aisle.

"She manipulated those documents! She has been trying to sabotage her sister for years!""

Brianna hurried toward her.

"Mom, stop.""

But Vanessa pushed past her.

"That business belongs to this family!""

Nia looked at her mother.

Then she looked at the document in her hand.

"Mom," she said quietly, "there's something you should know.""

Vanessa stopped.

Nia lifted the sealed envelope.

"This isn't the only document Dad left behind.""

She looked toward Daniel.

He nodded and signaled to the technician.

The giant screen went black.

A moment later, a new document appeared.

At the top were the words:

*FINAL BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT — RICHARD JAMES CARTER.*

Below it was a paragraph that neither Vanessa nor Brianna had expected to see.

Nia read the first sentence.

Then she looked up at her mother.

And whispered:

"Dad knew exactly what you were planning.""

The next page appeared.

It contained a signature.

Vanessa Carter's signature.

And beside it was a handwritten statement that threatened to destroy everything she and Brianna had built.

Vanessa's face went completely white.

Because the document didn't merely prove that Nia owned the designs.

May you like

It proved that Vanessa had already agreed, years earlier, never to claim them.

And the reason she had broken that agreement was about to become the biggest scandal of the entire showcase.
