Chapter 7: The Agreement That Exposed Her Mother

The signature on the giant screen belonged to Vanessa Carter.

There was no mistaking it.

The elegant loops, the sharp downward stroke beneath the final letter, even the small mark she always added after signing important documents.

Nia had seen that signature thousands of times.

On school permission slips.

On birthday cards.

On the documents Vanessa had signed when she sold their father's tailoring shop.

But this signature was different.

It appeared beneath a statement that would change everything.

*I acknowledge that all original designs, registered techniques, and intellectual property created by Richard James Carter remain the exclusive property of the designated beneficiary, Nia Carter. I waive any personal or derivative claim to those rights.*

The date was November 18.

The night of the photograph.

The night her father had finalized the transfer.

The night Vanessa had apparently agreed to something she had spent years trying to undo.

The audience remained silent.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

"Turn that off.""

Daniel Reed stood beside the host.

"Mrs. Carter, the document is part of the original legal archive.""

"I said turn it off!""

Harold Whitmore hurried toward the stage.

"This presentation has gone beyond the scope of the event.""

Margaret Ellis, who had been seated near the front, stood.

"Actually, Mr. Whitmore, the committee has an obligation to review the ownership dispute in full.""

Vanessa pointed toward Nia.

"She doesn't understand what she's doing! She's manipulating a family agreement to embarrass me!""

Nia held the microphone with both hands.

"Then explain why you signed it.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Brianna grabbed her mother's arm.

"Mom, stop talking.""

But Vanessa pulled away.

"Don't tell me what to do.""

Nia watched the exchange.

For years, Vanessa had controlled every conversation in the Carter household. She could end an argument by raising her voice. She could make people apologize for questioning her. She could turn an obvious injustice into a discussion about family loyalty.

Tonight, none of those tactics seemed to work.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Perhaps we should allow Ms. Carter to explain the document.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Of course. Everyone wants to hear from the little genius now.""

Nia took a breath.

"My father registered the Carter Signature Stitch years before I was old enough to understand what intellectual property meant. He later transferred the protected archive to me. My mother signed the acknowledgment.""

She pointed toward the screen.

"That means she knew the designs weren't hers to distribute.""

Harold interrupted.

"That doesn't establish that she knowingly participated in a commercial misrepresentation.""

Nia turned toward him.

"Then perhaps we should examine the other document.""

Daniel nodded to the technician.

The screen changed.

A second page appeared.

It was a letter from Vanessa to Harold Whitmore, dated four weeks earlier.

The first paragraph read:

As discussed, I would like to arrange the transfer of the Carter design archive into Brianna Carter's name. Nia has never demonstrated the maturity or business judgment necessary to manage the collection.

Nia continued reading.

The next paragraph was worse.

Brianna is already presenting the collection under her own creative identity. The original beneficiary agreement should not become an obstacle to the launch of Carter Atelier.

The audience began whispering.

Brianna looked toward her mother.

"You said that document was handled!""

Vanessa turned.

"Not now.""

"You told me everything was legal!""

"Be quiet!""

Nia felt her stomach twist.

This wasn't merely a disagreement anymore.

It was a coordinated attempt to transfer something they knew did not belong to them.

Harold stepped toward the technician.

"Remove that document. It's confidential.""

Margaret stood between him and the stage.

"Mr. Whitmore, you need to stop.""

He stared at her.

"You cannot seriously be taking her side.""

"I'm taking the side of proper verification.""

Nia looked at Harold.

"Did you know my mother had already signed the agreement?""

He adjusted his jacket.

"I was informed of certain family arrangements.""

"Did you know she had no authority to transfer the archive?""

He didn't answer.

"Did you help her submit the transfer request?""

Harold looked toward Daniel.

"This is an internal legal matter.""

Nia nodded.

"That's interesting. Because I found your signature on the witness statement.""

Harold's face tightened.

Vanessa suddenly stepped onto the stage.

"Enough! You want the truth? Fine!""

Nia turned toward her.

Vanessa's eyes were bright with anger.

"Your father was dying. He was making decisions that affected all of us. He had no idea what it took to run a business!""

Nia lowered the microphone.

"That's not an explanation.""

"Your father was stubborn. He believed you were some kind of miracle because you liked sewing. He thought you could carry the family name.""

"I was his daughter.""

"So was Brianna!""

The words echoed through the convention center.

Brianna looked down.

Vanessa continued.

"Do you know what I sacrificed? I spent years building relationships, finding opportunities, introducing Brianna to people who could help her. Your father wanted to leave everything to you because you reminded him of himself.""

Nia's voice softened.

"Why was that a problem?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Because I was the one who stayed with him when things got difficult.""

Nia felt a sharp pain in her chest.

"You told me he didn't want visitors during his final weeks.""

Vanessa went still.

Nia continued.

"You told me he needed rest. You told me he was too tired to see me. I thought I had more time.""

Vanessa's expression flickered.

"That has nothing to do with this.""

"Everything has to do with this.""

Nia stepped closer.

"Did you keep me away from him?""

The room became silent.

Vanessa looked toward the audience.

Then toward Brianna.

Finally, she whispered, "I was trying to protect you.""

Nia's eyes filled.

"From what?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Brianna moved toward her mother.

"Mom, we need to leave.""

But before they could move, Evelyn Brooks appeared near the side entrance.

She was holding a thick folder.

Nia recognized her immediately.

"Ms. Brooks?""

Evelyn approached Daniel.

"I apologize for arriving late. I was asked to bring the remaining archive documents.""

Daniel helped her onto the stage.

Vanessa's face changed.

"You?""

Evelyn looked directly at her.

"Good evening, Vanessa.""

"You have no business being here.""

"Actually, Richard gave me every reason to be here.""

She opened the folder.

"There's an additional record that was never included in the original beneficiary packet.""

Nia frowned.

"What record?""

Evelyn removed a small envelope.

"Your father asked me to keep this separately. He wanted it delivered only if someone challenged the agreement or attempted to transfer the archive.""

She handed it to Nia.

The envelope had her name written across the front.

Nia opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note and a small digital storage device.

The note read:

My Nia,

If this has reached you, then someone has tried to take what I worked so hard to protect.

I hope I'm wrong about the reason.

But there are things you deserve to know about the night the agreement was signed.

Please listen to the recording before making any decision about your mother.

Nia looked at Evelyn.

"There's a recording?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Your father recorded the final discussion because he wanted a clear record of everyone's understanding.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"No.""

Nia looked at her.

"Mom?""

"Don't play that.""

The fear in her mother's voice was unmistakable.

Brianna looked between them.

"What recording?""

Vanessa reached for the device.

Daniel moved between them.

"Please don't touch the evidence.""

Nia held the small device.

Her hands were trembling.

She looked at the audience.

Then at the screen.

"Can we play it?""

Margaret nodded.

The technician connected the device.

A faint crackling sound filled the convention center.

Then a familiar voice emerged.

Richard Carter.

Nia's father.

"Nia, if you're ever hearing this, I hope you're old enough to understand that love and trust are not always the same thing.""

Nia covered her mouth.

The audience remained completely silent.

Her father's voice continued.

"Vanessa, I want you to understand something. I am not leaving the archive to Nia because I love Brianna less. I'm leaving it to her because she has shown me that she respects the work.""

A second voice responded.

Vanessa.

"Richard, Brianna deserves an opportunity too.""

"She has opportunities, Vanessa. What she needs is to learn that someone else's work isn't hers to claim.""

"She's young.""

"She's old enough to understand honesty.""

There was a long pause.

Then Vanessa's recorded voice became angry.

"You are choosing Nia over your own wife.""

Richard answered quietly.

"No. I'm choosing to protect the work I spent my life creating.""

The recording continued.

Nia felt tears running down her cheeks.

Then her father's voice became softer.

"One day, Nia will understand. I don't want her to grow up believing that being talented means she must accept being used.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"And what about me? What do I get?""

Richard sighed.

"You get the family you keep telling me you want.""

The recording ended with the sound of a chair moving.

Then Richard spoke one final sentence.

"Just don't make our daughters compete for the things they should be learning to create together.""

The screen went black.

Nia couldn't move.

Her father had known.

He had seen the conflict coming.

And he had tried to prevent it.

She turned toward Vanessa.

"Why?""

Vanessa's eyes were filled with tears, but her expression remained defensive.

"You don't understand what it was like.""

"Then help me understand.""

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she seemed unable to find a sentence that would make her look innocent.

Brianna stepped away from her.

"Mom, what did you do?""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't start blaming me. You wanted this just as much as I did.""

Brianna's face went pale.

Nia looked at her sister.

"Did you know?""

Brianna swallowed.

"Know what?""

"That Dad had left the archive to me.""

Brianna didn't answer.

Nia waited.

Finally, Brianna whispered, "Mom told me there was another agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"She said Dad had changed his mind before he died.""

Nia stared at her.

"Did you ever see it?""

Brianna looked away.

"No.""

"Then why did you believe her?""

Brianna's eyes filled.

"Because she told me you were trying to take everything from us.""

Nia let out a quiet breath.

"Everything was never mine to take. Dad left it to me.""

Brianna looked toward the glowing turquoise gown.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what she had done.

But before she could speak, Harold's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

He answered quietly.

"Yes?""

A pause.

Then:

"What do you mean the account is frozen?""

Nia noticed Daniel watching him.

Harold turned away.

"No, that isn't possible. The launch is tonight.""

He listened.

Then his voice dropped.

"Who authorized the review?""

Another pause.

He ended the call.

Margaret approached.

"Mr. Whitmore, I believe you need to remain available for further questions.""

Harold looked at her.

"About what?""

Daniel placed another document on the table.

"The attempted transfer of the Carter archive was submitted through a company associated with your investment group.""

Harold's face went pale.

Nia looked at him.

"Why were you helping my mother?""

Harold didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

"The committee has also received evidence that Carter Atelier was preparing to license the turquoise gown before ownership was established.""

Brianna turned toward him.

"What?""

Harold looked furious.

"This is getting out of control.""

Nia stared at the three people standing in front of her.

Her mother.

Her sister.

And the man who had helped them.

She had come to the showcase to prove who designed a dress.

Now she was uncovering something much larger.

The host stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we will take a short break while the committee reviews these matters.""

The audience began murmuring.

Nia handed the microphone back.

She was exhausted.

Then Brianna approached her.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Nia.""

Nia turned.

"What?""

Brianna looked at her for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

"There's something else Mom never told you about Dad's last night.""

Nia's stomach tightened.

"What?""

Brianna glanced toward Vanessa.

Then back at Nia.

"He didn't just leave you the archive.""

May you like

She swallowed.

"He left you something else. Something Mom has been trying to find for years.""
