Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Hotel
“Her husband is Daniel Whitmore,” David said.
Charles Carter went completely still.
Vanessa's expression changed.
For the first time since Danielle had entered the hotel, she looked uncertain.
“That's right,” Vanessa interrupted.
“My husband is Daniel Whitmore. Perhaps you've heard of him.””
Charles slowly turned toward her.
“I have.””
Vanessa smiled.
“Then you understand that this situation needs to be handled carefully.””
Charles said nothing.
She continued.
“Daniel has business relationships with some very influential people. He regularly deals with hotel executives, investors, and corporate partners. I would hate for an unfortunate misunderstanding to damage those relationships.””
Charles looked at David.
“Did you hear that?””
David nodded.
“Every word.””
Richard hurried forward.
“Mr. Carter, perhaps we should move this conversation into my office. There's no reason to involve other guests.””
Charles glanced at the people watching.
“Why? You didn't seem concerned about privacy when my daughter was sitting on this floor.””
Richard swallowed.
“That was different.””
“How?””
Richard had no answer.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I'm not going to stand here and be interrogated. Richard, tell security to remove these people.””
Charles looked at her.
“You're still giving orders?””
Vanessa raised her chin.
“I have every right to be here.””
“So does my daughter.””
“Well, she should have behaved herself.””
Charles took a slow breath.
Then he turned toward Danielle.
“Sweetheart, did she apologize?””
Danielle shook her head.
“No.””
“Did the manager ask if you were hurt?””
“No.””
“Did anyone offer medical assistance?””
“No.””
Charles nodded once.
Then he turned toward Richard.
“Thank you for making the situation very clear.””
Richard frowned.
“I don't understand.””
“You will.””
Charles reached into his coat and removed his phone.
He pressed a contact.
“James, it's Charles. I need you to join me at the airport hotel immediately.””
He listened.
“Yes, now.””
Another pause.
“And bring the regional operations director. Also, contact our legal department.””
Vanessa laughed.
“That's impressive. You have lawyers too?””
Charles ended the call.
“Several.””
“Wonderful. So do we.””
“I have no doubt.””
Richard shifted uncomfortably.
“Mr. Carter, I think there's been some confusion regarding your expectations. This hotel has policies that must be followed.””
Charles nodded.
“Excellent. Let's discuss your policies.””
He turned toward the reception desk.
“Who is the front desk supervisor?””
A young woman stepped forward nervously.
“My name is Olivia, sir.””
“Olivia, can you tell me whether my daughter checked in today?””
Olivia looked at Richard.
He gave her a warning glance.
Charles noticed.
“Please answer the question.””
Olivia took a breath.
“Yes, sir. Miss Carter checked in at approximately one thirty this afternoon.””
“Did she cause any problems?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No, sir.””
“Did she complain about another guest?””
“She asked whether she could sit near the window while waiting for her family.””
“Thank you.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“She was blocking the walkway.””
Olivia looked down.
“Actually, ma'am, you were the one who walked into her.””
The lobby fell silent.
Vanessa stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
Olivia's voice trembled.
“I saw what happened.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Olivia, that's enough.””
Charles raised a hand.
“No. Let her finish.””
Olivia looked at Danielle.
“I saw Miss Carter apologize. Then you slapped her.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
“You're lying.””
Olivia shook her head.
“I'm not.””
Richard's face tightened.
“Olivia, return to your station.””
But before she could move, Marcus stepped forward.
“I recorded the whole thing.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Why are you still here?””
Marcus unlocked his phone.
“Because I witnessed an assault.””
David approached.
“Would you be willing to provide a copy of that recording?””
“Absolutely.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“You cannot use that video without my permission.””
David calmly replied, “We will allow the appropriate authorities to determine how it may be used.””
Charles looked toward Richard.
“Now, about those security cameras.””
Richard hesitated.
“Our system is currently undergoing routine maintenance.””
Charles stared at him.
“That's interesting.””
“What is?””
“Because your cameras were working when my daughter entered the building. And they were working when she fell.””
Richard shifted his weight.
“I'd have to check.””
“Then check.””
Richard picked up his walkie-talkie.
“Security, I need an immediate status report on the lobby footage.””
Static crackled.
A guard responded.
“Sir, the system is operational.””
Charles didn't blink.
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
“Thank you.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What are you doing?””
“Checking the footage.””
“Why?””
“Because Mr. Carter requested it.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Richard, don't be stupid.””
Charles heard her.
“So you are familiar with his decisions?””
Vanessa smiled nervously.
“I simply know how these businesses work.””
Charles looked at David.
“Make sure that statement is included in the report.””
David nodded.
At that moment, the lobby doors opened again.
A middle-aged man in an expensive charcoal suit hurried inside.
He was carrying a leather folder and looking around anxiously.
“Mr. Carter?””
Charles turned.
“James.””
James Morgan was the hotel's regional operations director.
He had worked in the hospitality industry for more than twenty years and had spent the last six years overseeing multiple properties across the country.
He walked straight toward Charles.
“I'm sorry to keep you waiting.””
Charles gestured toward Danielle.
“You should apologize to my daughter.””
James looked at her cheek.
Then at the baby.
His expression hardened.
“Miss Carter, I'm deeply sorry for what happened.””
Danielle nodded politely.
“Thank you.””
James turned toward Richard.
“Can you explain why I'm being told that a guest was assaulted and then threatened with removal?””
Richard opened his mouth.
“James, I can explain—”
“Then explain.””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
She immediately stepped forward.
“This is being blown completely out of proportion. I had a disagreement with her, and she became disrespectful.””
James looked at her.
“Did you strike her?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“She bumped into me.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I was defending myself.””
James looked toward the security desk.
“Have the footage brought up.””
Richard spoke quickly.
“James, perhaps we should review everything privately.””
“No. We're reviewing it now.””
A security employee approached with a tablet.
Within seconds, the lobby camera footage appeared on the screen.
Everyone gathered around.
The video showed Danielle standing beside the seating area with her baby.
Vanessa approached.
Their shoulders brushed.
Danielle stepped back and apologized.
Vanessa said something.
Then she raised her hand.
The slap landed.
Danielle stumbled backward and fell.
Her arms immediately wrapped around the newborn.
The footage continued.
Vanessa stood over her.
Richard approached.
He never once checked on the baby.
Instead, he pointed toward the exit.
Nobody spoke.
James watched the footage twice.
Then he turned toward Richard.
“Is there another version?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
James looked toward Vanessa.
“And you still maintain that she attacked you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don't want to discuss this anymore.””
Charles finally spoke.
“That's convenient.””
He turned toward James.
“I want copies of every relevant recording, the written incident report, and the names of every employee involved.””
“Of course.””
“I also want the original report preserved. No alterations. No deletions.””
“Understood.””
Richard looked increasingly nervous.
“Mr. Carter, surely we can resolve this without escalating matters.””
Charles turned toward him.
“You had the opportunity to resolve this when my daughter was sitting on the floor with a newborn in her arms.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
Charles continued.
“You could have helped her. You could have asked whether the baby was injured. You could have reviewed the cameras before making a decision.””
He paused.
“Instead, you chose to protect the person who slapped her.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Enough! My husband will hear about this.””
Charles looked at her.
“Please call him.””
Vanessa frowned.
“What?””
“Call Daniel Whitmore.””
She hesitated.
Charles took out his phone.
“I'd prefer that we all have the same information.””
Vanessa pulled her phone from her handbag.
She dialed.
It rang twice.
“Daniel? I need you at the airport hotel. There's a situation.””
She glanced at Charles.
“Yes, it's about a woman who claims I assaulted her.””
Charles watched her carefully.
Vanessa listened.
Then her expression changed.
“No, Daniel. It's not like that.””
Another pause.
“Because her father is here, and he's making threats.””
She looked at Charles.
“His name is Charles Carter.””
The color drained from her face.
She listened for several seconds.
Then she lowered the phone slightly.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
She looked at the screen.
The call had ended.
“What happened?”” Richard whispered.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
Then it rang again.
She answered immediately.
“Daniel?””
A man's voice came through loudly enough for those standing nearby to hear.
“Vanessa, what have you done?””
Her lips parted.
“What do you mean?””
“Do you have any idea who Charles Carter is?””
Vanessa looked at Charles.
“He's her father.””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“That's not what I'm asking.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Daniel, I don't understand.””
Then her husband said six words that made her knees weaken.
*“You just slapped my company's biggest investor.””*
And Charles Carter, who had remained silent throughout the entire conversation, slowly reached for the leather folder David was holding.

Inside was a document Vanessa had never expected to see.
A document that would reveal exactly who owned the hotel she had just threatened to destroy.
