Chapter 4: The Man Who Owned the Hotel
For several seconds, Vanessa Whitmore couldn't move.
Her phone remained pressed against her ear.
“Daniel?”” she whispered.
“What did you just say?””
On the other end, her husband sounded furious.
“I said you just assaulted the daughter of Charles Carter. Do you understand what that means?””
Vanessa looked at Charles.
He stood beside his daughter, one hand resting gently on her shoulder. His expression was calm, almost painfully calm.
“I don't know who he is,” Vanessa replied.
Daniel released a frustrated breath.
“Then perhaps you should have found out before putting your hands on his family.””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Daniel, she bumped into me. I was upset. It wasn't a big deal.””
“Not a big deal?””
“I barely touched her!””
Charles heard that.
He looked toward David.
“Make sure that statement is recorded too.””
David nodded and typed something into his tablet.
Daniel continued shouting.
“Charles Carter is the principal investor behind the hospitality group that owns this property. His investment company holds a controlling interest in the parent organization. He's also on the board.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
She looked toward Richard.
“Is that true?””
Richard didn't answer.
Charles finally spoke.
“Would you like me to introduce myself properly?””
Vanessa slowly lowered her phone.
“Mr. Carter, I think we should talk.””
“You've had plenty of opportunities to talk.””
“I didn't know who your daughter was.””
Charles looked at Danielle.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“Would that have changed how you treated her?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Charles continued.
“My daughter doesn't need to be related to an investor to deserve basic human respect.””
Danielle looked down at Amara.
Her father was speaking for her, but she still remembered every second of what had happened.
The slap.
The fall.
The baby crying.
The manager pointing toward the exit.
She had never felt so small in a room full of people.
And now the same people were suddenly looking at her as though she mattered.
That realization hurt almost as much as the slap.
James Morgan, the regional operations director, approached Charles.
“Sir, I can arrange a private conference room immediately.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
James looked surprised.
“No?””
“My daughter was humiliated in this lobby. The people who witnessed it should be able to witness the response.””
Richard cleared his throat.
“Mr. Carter, I really think we're taking this too far.””
Charles turned.
“Are we?””
“I'm sure there was no intention to discriminate against your daughter.””
Danielle finally spoke.
“Then why did he say people like me shouldn't be in this hotel?””
Richard looked at her.
“I was trying to manage a difficult situation.””
“You didn't ask what happened.””
“I was dealing with conflicting accounts.””
“You didn't ask the witnesses.””
Richard glanced at Olivia.
The young receptionist stood silently near the desk.
Danielle continued.
“You didn't even look at my daughter. She was crying on the floor, and you were worried about getting me outside.””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Miss Carter, I'm sorry you feel that way.””
Danielle's eyes filled with tears again.
“That's not an apology.””
Charles placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Let her finish.””
Danielle looked at Richard.
“I came here because my flight was delayed. I paid for a room. I was waiting for my family. I wasn't asking for special treatment.””
She paused.
“I just wanted somewhere safe to sit with my baby.””
Richard stared at the floor.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Fine. I'm sorry. Can we please move on?””
Danielle looked at her.
“You're sorry?””
“Yes.””
“For hitting me?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“For what happened.””
Danielle shook her head.
“No. That's not what I asked.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“I said I'm sorry.””
“Then say what you're sorry for.””
Vanessa looked toward Richard, expecting him to intervene.
He didn't.
She finally muttered, “I'm sorry I slapped you.””
Danielle remained silent.
Vanessa added, “I was frustrated.””
“Your frustration doesn't give you permission to hit people.””
“I already apologized!””
“And I heard you.””
Charles looked at James.
“Now, I want to know something. Has this happened before?””
James hesitated.
“Sir?””
“Complaints involving this manager. Complaints involving this property. Discrimination allegations.
Mistreatment of guests. Anything.””
James glanced toward Richard.
“I'll have our compliance department investigate.””
“Good. Start today.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Charles, I've worked in this industry for twenty-five years. I've managed hundreds of employees and thousands of guests. You're judging my entire career based on one incident.””
Charles studied him.
“No. I'm judging your response to one incident.””
Richard looked confused.
Charles continued.
“You had a choice. You could have protected a vulnerable guest, or you could have protected someone who threatened your reputation. You chose the second.””
James quietly opened his notebook.
Charles turned toward him.
“Effective immediately, I want Richard removed from guest-facing management duties while the investigation is conducted.””
Richard's face tightened.
“You can't do that.””
James answered before Charles could.
“Actually, I can. You're being placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.””
Richard looked at Charles.
“Sir, please. I've got a family. I've worked hard for this position.””
Charles nodded.
“Then you should have remembered that other people have families too.””
Richard's shoulders dropped.
Vanessa looked increasingly uncomfortable.
“Does this mean I'm banned from the hotel?””
Charles looked at her.
“That depends on the investigation and the hotel's policies.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Unbelievable.””
Danielle adjusted Amara's blanket.
“What's unbelievable is that you still think you're the victim.””
Vanessa glared at her.
“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””
Danielle shook her head.
“No. I'm exhausted.””
That answer silenced the lobby.
Charles turned toward his daughter.
“Sweetheart, why don't we get you somewhere comfortable?””
Danielle nodded.
James immediately offered to arrange a private suite.
But before they could move, David's tablet chimed.
He looked at the screen.
“Mr. Carter?””
Charles turned.
“What is it?””
David's expression was serious.
“I've received the preliminary ownership and vendor records you requested.””
“And?””
David glanced toward Vanessa.
“There's something unusual.””
Charles held out his hand.
David passed him the tablet.
Charles read the document.
Then he looked at James.
“Is this accurate?””
James leaned closer.
His face changed.
“Yes, sir. It appears to be.””
Danielle looked between them.
“What is it, Dad?””
Charles slowly turned the tablet so she could see.
A company name appeared beside a recent financial transaction.
*WHITMORE HOSPITALITY CONSULTING.*
Danielle frowned.
“What does Vanessa have to do with the hotel?””
Charles looked toward his lawyer.
David answered.
“That's what we're going to find out.””
Vanessa suddenly stopped smiling.
“Wait. What are you suggesting?””
Charles closed the document.
“I'm suggesting that this afternoon's incident may be considerably bigger than an argument in a hotel lobby.””
And for the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
Because she had just discovered that the man standing in front of her wasn't merely someone with money.
May you like
He was someone who could examine every business relationship connected to her husband's company.
And the first document had already raised questions.
