Chapter 2: The Man Who Walked Through Those Doors

The man approaching Naomi was Benjamin Carter.

To the world of New Orleans business, he was known as a billionaire investor, a real estate developer, and the founder of Carter Hospitality Group.

To Naomi, he was simply Dad.

He was sixty-one, with a distinguished face, closely trimmed silver hair, and the kind of quiet presence that made people instinctively move out of his way.

He wore a dark navy suit, a white shirt, and a simple black watch.

No flashy jewelry.

No unnecessary display of wealth.

But the two men walking behind him carried enough documents to make several powerful executives nervous.

Naomi stood as soon as she saw him.

"Daddy.""

Benjamin crossed the lobby in long strides.

He didn't look at Victoria.

He didn't look at Marcus.

He went straight to his daughter.

"Let me see your face.""

Naomi hesitated.

"It's okay.""

"Naomi.""

She gently turned her cheek toward him.

Benjamin's jaw tightened.

A red mark was already spreading across her light-brown skin.

He looked at the baby.

Then he carefully touched Naomi's shoulder.

"Did she do this?""

Naomi nodded.

Benjamin took a slow breath.

"All right.""

He didn't shout.

He didn't threaten anybody.

He simply removed his coat and placed it around his daughter's shoulders.

"You're cold.""

Naomi shook her head.

"I'm fine, Daddy.""

"You're shaking.""

Grace made a small sound beneath her blanket.

Benjamin's entire expression softened.

"And how's my little princess?""

Naomi smiled weakly.

"She's hungry.""

"Then let's get her comfortable.""

He looked toward the reception desk.

"Could someone please bring a private seating area and some warm water for my daughter?""

Daniel, the young receptionist, immediately stepped forward.

"Of course, sir.""

Marcus hurried over.

"Good evening, sir. I'm Marcus Bell, the general manager. I apologize for the confusion.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"What confusion?""

Marcus straightened.

"Unfortunately, there was a disagreement between your daughter and another guest. We were simply trying to maintain order.""

Benjamin's eyes moved briefly toward Naomi.

"Did you see what happened?""

Marcus cleared his throat.

"I wasn't present for the initial interaction.""

"Then how did you determine my daughter was responsible?""

Marcus glanced at Victoria.

She stood up, smoothing the front of her fuchsia dress.

"Mr. Carter, I believe there has been a misunderstanding.""

Benjamin turned toward her.

Victoria smiled.

"I was simply trying to protect the standards of this establishment. Your daughter was behaving rather inappropriately.""

Naomi looked down.

Benjamin noticed.

"Mrs. Whitmore, is it?""

Victoria nodded.

"Yes. Victoria Whitmore.""

"Did you slap my daughter?""

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"I merely pushed her away after she nearly knocked into me.""

Naomi immediately looked up.

"That's not true.""

Victoria sighed.

"Oh, please. We don't need to turn this into a dramatic performance.""

Benjamin didn't move.

He looked at Marcus.

"Is there security footage?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Naturally. However, sir, I would prefer to handle this internally.""

"Why?""

"Because incidents like this can damage the reputation of the hotel.""

Benjamin gave him a long, unreadable look.

"Interesting.""

Victoria crossed her arms.

"Mr. Carter, I have been a loyal guest here for twelve years. I have stayed in the presidential suite, hosted charity dinners, and brought several influential clients through these doors. I would appreciate it if this situation weren't exaggerated.""

Benjamin nodded slowly.

"That sounds like a very impressive list.""

Victoria relaxed slightly.

"Thank you.""

"Unfortunately, none of it answers my question.""

Her smile vanished again.

Benjamin turned toward Daniel.

"Young man, did you witness what happened?""

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

The manager gave him a warning stare.

Benjamin noticed.

"Don't look at him. Look at me.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes, sir.""

"What did you see?""

Daniel's voice was quiet at first.

"Mrs. Whitmore walked toward Miss Carter. She stepped in front of her, and then...""

He glanced at Naomi.

"She slapped her.""

The lobby became silent.

Victoria's face reddened.

"That's a lie!""

Daniel flinched.

Benjamin continued calmly.

"Did my daughter touch her?""

"No, sir.""

"Did she threaten her?""

"No, sir.""

"Did she raise her voice?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Not until after Mrs. Whitmore slapped her.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Daniel, that's enough.""

Benjamin turned.

"Why?""

"Because he's an employee, and I will handle the investigation.""

"An investigation into what?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"An incident involving two guests.""

Benjamin's voice became colder.

"One guest assaulted another. Then you ordered the victim out of the building.""

Marcus opened his mouth.

Benjamin raised one hand.

"Let's not make this complicated.""

One of the men accompanying Benjamin, a broad-shouldered attorney named Robert Ellis, stepped forward.

"Mr. Bell, we would appreciate copies of the incident report and preservation of all available surveillance footage.""

Marcus frowned.

"On what authority?""

Robert handed him a business card.

"Legal counsel for Carter Hospitality Group.""

Victoria blinked.

The name on the card seemed to take a moment to register.

Carter Hospitality Group.

Marcus looked from the card to Benjamin.

"Wait...""

Benjamin said nothing.

Victoria let out a short laugh.

"Surely you're not suggesting that...""

She stopped.

For the first time, she looked genuinely uncertain.

Marcus studied the man standing in front of him.

Then he looked toward the gold emblem on Benjamin's briefcase.

A small image of a building with the initials C.H.G.

His face changed.

"Mr. Carter?""

Benjamin adjusted his cuff.

"Yes.""

Marcus swallowed.

"But I thought...""

"You thought what?""

Marcus looked toward the reception desk.

"Nothing, sir.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Marcus, what's going on?""

He didn't answer.

Benjamin looked at his daughter.

"Naomi, did you know this hotel belonged to our group?""

Naomi stared at him.

"What?""

She looked around the enormous lobby.

The chandeliers.

The polished marble.

The ornate ironwork.

The familiar gold lettering behind reception.

Then she looked at her father.

"This is one of yours?""

Benjamin nodded.

"One of our newest acquisitions.""

Naomi shook her head.

"You never told me.""

"I didn't think it mattered.""

"But Daddy, why didn't you say something when I told you where I was going?""

Benjamin smiled sadly.

"Because I wanted you to enjoy your visit without people treating you differently.""

Naomi looked toward Victoria.

"Well, that certainly didn't work.""

Benjamin's expression hardened.

"No. It didn't.""

He turned toward Marcus.

"Who owns the hotel?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Your company, sir. The acquisition was finalized three weeks ago.""

"And who manages it?""

"I do.""

"Then I have a question.""

"Of course.""

Benjamin glanced at Naomi's cheek.

"How did a woman get slapped in your lobby while you stood there and decided she was the problem?""

Marcus rubbed his palms together.

"Sir, I was acting on the information available to me.""

"Did you ask for the information?""

"I...""

"Did you review the cameras?""

"Not yet.""

"Did you ask the employee who witnessed it?""

Marcus fell silent.

Benjamin nodded.

"Exactly.""

Victoria suddenly stepped between them.

"This is becoming ridiculous. Marcus was only doing his job. I am a respected member of this community, and I will not be treated like a criminal because of one misunderstanding.""

Robert Ellis spoke calmly.

"Mrs. Whitmore, nobody has accused you of a crime. We are requesting that the available evidence be preserved.""

Victoria turned toward him.

"Don't speak to me as though I'm some ordinary troublemaker.""

Naomi finally found her voice.

"You didn't seem to care about my dignity when you slapped me.""

Victoria stared at her.

"You should be grateful your father arrived before this became worse.""

Naomi looked down at Grace.

Then back at the woman.

"I was grateful when my father arrived because I needed help. Not because I needed him to be important.""

Benjamin looked at his daughter with quiet pride.

He turned toward Marcus.

"I want the security footage preserved. I want written statements from every employee who witnessed this. And I want to know why my daughter was threatened with removal.""

Marcus nodded rapidly.

"Absolutely, sir.""

"Good.""

Benjamin turned toward the lobby.

"Robert, contact our operations office. I want an independent review.""

Robert nodded.

"Understood.""

But just as everyone began to move, Victoria reached into her expensive handbag.

She pulled out her phone and tapped a contact.

"Hello? It's Victoria. I need you to come down here immediately.""

Marcus looked alarmed.

"Mrs. Whitmore, who are you calling?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"Someone who can explain to Mr. Carter that this hotel is not nearly as simple as he thinks.""

Benjamin raised an eyebrow.

"Who would that be?""

Victoria smiled for the first time since he had entered.

"The chairman of the local hotel association.""

She glanced at Naomi.

"And someone who knows exactly what kind of woman your daughter really is.""

Benjamin's expression didn't change.

But Robert Ellis slowly closed his briefcase.

Because there was something about Victoria's confidence that bothered him.

She wasn't simply defending herself.

May you like

She seemed to know something.

And whatever it was, she was preparing to use it.
