Chapter 4: The Signature That Shouldn't Exist

Benjamin Carter read the signature three times.

The first time, he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him.

The second time, he wondered whether someone had forged it.

By the third time, he knew exactly whose name he was looking at.

*Evelyn Carter.*

His younger sister.

The woman who had helped him build Carter Hospitality Group from a small family business into one of the most powerful hospitality companies in the South.

Benjamin slowly lowered the document.

"Where did you get this?""

Victoria adjusted her gold earrings.

"From someone who understands how this hotel operates.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It's the answer you're getting.""

Robert Ellis took the document and examined the final page.

"Mr. Carter, this appears to be an agreement authorizing a private hospitality advisory committee to approve certain guest-management policies.""

Benjamin's expression hardened.

"Who signed it?""

Robert pointed toward the signature.

"Evelyn Carter.""

Naomi stood beside her father, holding Grace.

"Your sister signed something like this?""

Benjamin nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

Victoria smiled.

"Your sister understood that this hotel needed certain standards. She understood that not every guest interaction could be handled by corporate executives sitting in expensive offices.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"And what exactly did she understand about deciding which people belong in a hotel lobby?""

Victoria shrugged.

"Maintaining the right atmosphere.""

Naomi felt her stomach tighten.

There it was again.

That phrase.

The same ugly idea disguised in polished language.

Benjamin handed the document back to Robert.

"Check the date.""

Robert examined the first page.

"August fourteenth.""

Benjamin frowned.

"That's impossible.""

Naomi looked at him.

"Why?""

"The acquisition was finalized on October twelfth. This document was supposedly signed almost two months before we even owned the hotel.""

Harold Whitmore stepped forward.

"That doesn't necessarily make it invalid.""

Benjamin turned toward him.

"I didn't say it was invalid. I said I wanted to know why it exists.""

Harold loosened his tie.

"These arrangements were part of the hotel's previous operating structure.""

"Then why does it contain my sister's signature?""

Victoria answered before her husband could.

"Because Evelyn was involved in the transition.""

Benjamin stared at her.

"Evelyn was never involved in this hotel's transition.""

Victoria's expression flickered.

Only for a second.

But Naomi noticed.

So did Robert.

Benjamin looked toward the manager.

"Marcus, did you know about this agreement?""

Marcus adjusted his jacket.

"I was informed that Mrs. Whitmore had certain privileges.""

"By whom?""

"I don't recall.""

"You don't recall who gave you authority to remove guests?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Mr. Carter, I was following established procedures.""

Benjamin stepped closer.

"Then show me the procedures.""

Marcus looked toward the reception computer.

"Those documents are stored in the administrative system.""

"Excellent. Open them.""

Marcus hesitated.

Victoria interrupted.

"Benjamin, this is unnecessary. Your daughter has already received an apology.""

Naomi stared at her.

"An apology?""

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Perhaps not in those exact words, but surely you understand that situations become emotional.""

Naomi shifted Grace gently.

"You slapped me. You lied about me. You watched that man order me out. And now you're telling me I should be satisfied because you think this is becoming inconvenient?""

Victoria's lips tightened.

"Young lady, you really need to learn when to stop talking.""

Benjamin turned toward her.

"She'll stop when she wants to.""

Then he looked at Robert.

"Call Evelyn.""

Robert immediately took out his phone.

Before he could dial, Benjamin's phone began vibrating.

The screen displayed a familiar name.

*EVELYN.*

Benjamin stared at it.

Naomi noticed.

"That's strange.""

He answered.

"Hello, Evelyn.""

Her voice came through immediately.

"Benjamin, where are you?""

"At the St. Charles Royale.""

A pause.

Then she asked, "Is Naomi with you?""

Benjamin's expression changed.

"Yes. How do you know that?""

Evelyn sighed.

"Listen carefully. You need to leave that hotel immediately.""

Benjamin glanced at Naomi.

"Why?""

"Because you're walking into something you don't understand.""

Benjamin's eyes narrowed.

"Then explain it.""

"I can't do that over the phone.""

"Why not?""

"Because people are listening.""

Benjamin looked around the lobby.

Victoria had stopped moving.

Harold was staring at him.

Marcus appeared to be holding his breath.

Benjamin lowered his voice.

"Evelyn, your signature is on a document authorizing guest restrictions at this hotel.""

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered, "You found it.""

Benjamin's jaw tightened.

"Did you sign it?""

"Benjamin, please. Not here.""

"Did you sign it?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

Naomi looked at her father.

Benjamin closed his eyes briefly.

"Why?""

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"Because I was trying to protect the company.""

"From what?""

"I'll explain when you get home.""

Benjamin looked toward the document in Robert's hands.

"Someone was just slapped in my hotel, Evelyn. My daughter.""

"What?""

"Victoria Whitmore assaulted Naomi, and Marcus Bell tried to throw her out.""

Evelyn went quiet.

Then she said something that made Benjamin's expression change completely.

"Benjamin, Victoria wasn't supposed to be there tonight.""

He stared at the phone.

"What do you mean?""

"I mean the arrangement was supposed to be suspended.""

"By whom?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

Instead, she whispered, "Check the acquisition records. Look at the name of the person who approved the final payment.""

The call ended.

Benjamin slowly lowered his phone.

Naomi touched his arm.

"Daddy?""

He looked at her.

"Something is wrong.""

Robert approached.

"Did she confirm the signature?""

Benjamin nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did she explain the agreement?""

"Not completely.""

Robert glanced at the document.

"Then we need the original.""

Harold suddenly stepped between them.

"That's enough. This document contains confidential business information.""

Robert raised an eyebrow.

"Your wife introduced it.""

"That doesn't give you the right to seize it.""

Benjamin looked at him.

"Nobody is seizing anything. We're asking for the original so we can verify its authenticity.""

Victoria snatched the paper from the counter.

"I think I've entertained this conversation long enough.""

She folded the document and put it in her handbag.

Harold whispered, "Victoria, don't.""

She ignored him.

Then she looked directly at Naomi.

"You should have stayed home with your baby.""

Naomi's fingers tightened around Grace's blanket.

Benjamin stepped forward.

"Don't speak to my daughter again.""

Victoria smiled coldly.

"Then perhaps you should ask your daughter why she came here in the first place.""

Naomi frowned.

"What?""

Victoria turned toward Harold.

"Tell him.""

Harold looked uncomfortable.

"Victoria, this isn't the time.""

"Tell him!""

Harold glanced at Benjamin.

Then at Naomi.

"Your daughter was expected to attend a private meeting here tonight.""

Naomi blinked.

"I was?""

Benjamin looked at her.

"What meeting?""

Naomi shook her head.

"I don't know what he's talking about.""

Victoria gave a small laugh.

"Interesting.""

She opened her handbag, removed a second piece of paper, and placed it on the counter.

It was a printed email.

Naomi recognized her own name immediately.

Beneath it was a message confirming a meeting at 7:00 p.m.

The sender was listed as:

*Evelyn Carter — Executive Office.*

Benjamin stared at the page.

Naomi whispered, "Daddy, I never received this.""

Victoria smiled.

"Then perhaps someone sent it without your knowledge.""

Benjamin turned to Robert.

"Find out who created that email.""

Robert took a photograph of the document.

Then he examined the sender details.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Carter...""

"What?""

"This invitation was generated using an executive account.""

"Whose?""

Robert looked toward Benjamin.

Then he answered.

"Yours.""

For the first time that evening, Naomi saw her father lose his composure.

Because someone hadn't simply forged a hotel policy.

May you like

Someone had used Benjamin Carter's own authority to bring his daughter into a situation that appeared to have been planned before she ever entered the building.

And whoever had done it knew exactly when she would arrive.
