Chapter 3: The Name on the Contract
Ten minutes later, the lobby had become a very different place.
The champagne glass Victoria had been holding sat untouched on a marble side table.
Marcus was pacing beside the reception desk, speaking quietly into his phone.
Daniel had been asked to remain available for a formal statement.
Naomi sat on the velvet sofa with Grace sleeping against her chest.
Benjamin stood nearby, speaking with Robert Ellis.
For the first time since arriving, Naomi could breathe.
Her father had brought a small bag from his car containing a bottle of water, a clean baby blanket, and the little knitted cap Grace usually wore.
He placed the cap gently over his granddaughter's head.
"She's getting bigger.""
Naomi smiled.
"She's only three weeks old.""
"Still. Bigger than yesterday.""
Naomi laughed softly.
Benjamin sat beside her.
"How long were you waiting here?""
"Maybe fifteen minutes before everything happened.""
"And why didn't you tell me you were coming?""
"I wanted to surprise you.""
Benjamin looked at her.
"By driving two hours with a newborn?""
Naomi shrugged.
"You always complain that I don't visit enough.""
"That's because you don't.""
She smiled.
Then her expression changed.
"Daddy, I don't want you to make a big scene because of me.""
Benjamin looked toward the reception desk.
"Naomi, someone hit you in front of your child.""
"I know.""
"And then a man who was supposed to protect the guests tried to throw you out.""
"I know.""
"Why are you worried about a scene?""
She looked down at Grace.
"Because I don't want people thinking I only got justice because my father owns the building.""
Benjamin was quiet for a moment.
Then he gently touched her hand.
"Listen to me. Your father owning a building doesn't make your dignity more valuable. It was valuable before you walked through those doors.""
Naomi's eyes filled.
Benjamin continued.
"If you had been a teacher, a cashier, a nurse, or a woman with ten dollars in her purse, what happened to you would still be wrong.""
She leaned her head against his shoulder.
"Thank you, Daddy.""
He kissed the top of her head.
"Now let's find out what happened.""
Across the lobby, Victoria was speaking with a man who had just arrived.
He was in his late fifties, wearing a charcoal suit and a blue silk tie.
His name was Harold Whitmore.
He was Victoria's husband and the chairman of the New Orleans Luxury Hospitality Association.
He had spent decades cultivating relationships with hotel owners, developers, and local officials.
Victoria hurried toward him.
"Harold, finally.""
Harold glanced at the people gathered in the lobby.
"What happened?""
Victoria lowered her voice.
"That woman caused a scene, and now her father is threatening everybody.""
Harold looked at Naomi.
Then Benjamin.
He stopped walking.
"Benjamin Carter?""
Benjamin turned.
"Harold Whitmore.""
The two men stared at each other.
They had met several times at industry events.
They had even sat at the same table during a charity gala the previous year.
Harold offered a stiff smile.
"I wasn't expecting to see you here.""
Benjamin nodded.
"Neither was I.""
Harold looked toward his wife.
"Victoria tells me there's been a disagreement.""
Benjamin gestured toward Naomi.
"Your wife slapped my daughter.""
Harold frowned.
"Victoria?""
"Yes.""
Victoria immediately interrupted.
"Harold, don't let him twist this. The woman was behaving aggressively.""
Naomi looked up.
"That's not what happened.""
Harold raised his hand.
"Let's all calm down.""
Benjamin's voice remained even.
"We can calm down after we establish the facts.""
Harold looked toward Marcus.
"You're the manager?""
"Yes, sir.""
"Explain.""
Marcus cleared his throat.
"Mrs. Whitmore reported an altercation. I intervened and requested that Miss Carter leave the property.""
Harold frowned.
"You requested that she leave?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
Harold glanced toward Benjamin.
"I understand this is upsetting, but perhaps we can resolve the matter privately.""
Benjamin tilted his head.
"Why privately?""
"Because nobody benefits from a public confrontation.""
Robert Ellis stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, the incident was witnessed by multiple people and captured by hotel surveillance. We are preserving the evidence.""
Harold looked irritated.
"That seems excessive.""
"Preserving evidence is standard procedure.""
Victoria gave a bitter laugh.
"Harold, you're wasting your time. They want to humiliate me.""
Benjamin looked at her.
"You humiliated my daughter in front of her newborn.""
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
"I corrected her behavior.""
Naomi stood slowly.
"By hitting me?""
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"You should watch your tone.""
Benjamin immediately moved beside Naomi.
"She's allowed to speak.""
Harold rubbed his forehead.
"Victoria, please.""
But Victoria wasn't finished.
She turned toward the reception desk.
"Marcus, tell them about the complaint.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What complaint?""
"The complaint I made about the woman's behavior.""
Naomi stared.
"You made a complaint?""
Victoria nodded.
"Yes. And I expect it to be documented.""
Robert opened his briefcase.
"Then we would appreciate a copy.""
Victoria looked satisfied.
"Of course.""
Marcus began typing on the computer.
A moment later, he stopped.
His eyebrows drew together.
"That's strange.""
Harold stepped closer.
"What?""
Marcus looked at the screen.
"The incident report was already opened under Mrs. Whitmore's name.""
Robert glanced at him.
"By whom?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Me.""
"When?""
"About five minutes after the incident.""
Robert looked up.
"Before you reviewed the security footage?""
Marcus didn't answer.
"And before you interviewed the witnesses?""
Marcus shifted his weight.
"Yes.""
Robert closed his briefcase halfway.
"Then I would strongly recommend preserving the original report and its edit history.""
Harold looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Why is everyone acting as though I've done something wrong?""
Naomi took a breath.
"Because you hit me.""
Victoria pointed a finger at her.
"And you have no idea who you're dealing with.""
Benjamin stepped forward.
"Neither do you.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then a quiet voice came from behind the reception desk.
"Mr. Carter?""
Everyone turned.
Daniel was standing with a small tablet in his hands.
Benjamin nodded.
"Yes?""
Daniel swallowed.
"I think there's something else you should see.""
Marcus immediately moved toward him.
"Daniel, we are handling this.""
Daniel stepped backward.
"No, sir. I think Mr. Carter needs to see it.""
Robert walked toward the desk.
"What is it?""
Daniel glanced toward Victoria.
Then he lowered his voice.
"The hotel reservation system.""
Harold frowned.
"What about it?""
Daniel turned the tablet around.
"There was a note added to Mrs. Whitmore's reservation this afternoon.""
Robert leaned forward.
"Read it.""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he did.
"Guest requests that unauthorized individuals be removed from the lobby immediately. Specifically, anyone who appears to be soliciting or attempting to access private guest areas.""
Naomi's mouth fell open.
"Unauthorized individuals?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes, ma'am.""
She looked at Victoria.
"Was that about me?""
Victoria shrugged.
"How would I know?""
Daniel tapped the screen.
"There is more.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"That's enough.""
Benjamin turned sharply.
"Don't interrupt him.""
Daniel looked frightened, but continued.
"The note was entered at 3:42 p.m. It was approved by management.""
Robert asked, "Which management account?""
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then he turned it around.
The name displayed beneath the authorization field was:
*MARCUS BELL — GENERAL MANAGER.*
The lobby went silent.
Benjamin stared at Marcus.
"You approved an instruction to remove people based on appearance?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No, sir. That's not what it means.""
"Then explain it.""
"It was a general security instruction.""
Naomi looked at the tablet.
"But I wasn't trying to enter a private guest area. I was standing in the public lobby.""
Marcus looked away.
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
"Enough of this nonsense. I am leaving.""
Harold caught her arm.
"Victoria, wait.""
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
Benjamin looked toward Robert.
"Save everything.""
Robert nodded.
"Already in progress.""
Then Daniel spoke again.
"There's something else, Mr. Carter.""
Benjamin turned.
Daniel swallowed hard.
"The reservation note wasn't the first one.""
"What do you mean?""
Daniel tapped the tablet again.
A second screen appeared.
This one showed a list of previous guest reports.
Several entries had been marked with nearly identical wording.
Guests described as suspicious.
Guests described as inappropriate.
Guests described as not fitting the hotel's atmosphere.
Each report had been approved by the same manager.
Marcus Bell.
Naomi stared at the screen.
"How many people?""
Daniel looked down.
"At least fourteen in the last six months.""
Harold's face tightened.
"That cannot be right.""
Robert studied the entries.
"These are all recorded in the hotel's system?""
"Yes, sir.""
Benjamin looked at Marcus.
"Have these people been removed from the property?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Those were routine security matters.""
Benjamin's voice dropped.
"Did you investigate them?""
Marcus said nothing.
Then Victoria suddenly laughed.
"You people are making a mistake.""
Everyone turned.
She reached into her handbag again and pulled out a folded document.
She held it up between two fingers.
"Benjamin, you may own the building, but you don't know everything that happens inside it.""
Benjamin looked at the paper.
"What is that?""
Victoria unfolded it.
"A signed agreement.""
Harold looked alarmed.
"Victoria, what are you doing?""
She ignored him.
"This hotel has a private management arrangement. Certain guest privileges were negotiated before your acquisition.""
Robert's expression sharpened.
"Let me see that document.""
Victoria pulled it back.
"Not so fast.""
Benjamin stared at her.
"What privileges?""
Victoria smiled.
"The right to approve certain hospitality policies, including guest access and VIP security.""
Harold stepped closer.
"Victoria, give him the document.""
She turned toward her husband.
"Why? Are you afraid they'll find out?""
Benjamin held out his hand.
"Mrs. Whitmore, give the document to my attorney.""
Victoria hesitated.
Then she placed it on the marble counter.
Robert unfolded it carefully.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
"Mr. Carter...""
Benjamin looked at him.
"What?""
Robert pointed toward a signature at the bottom of the final page.
It wasn't Victoria's.
It wasn't Harold's.
It was a name Benjamin recognized immediately.
A name that had no business appearing on an agreement connected to his hotel.
Robert looked up.
"Sir, I think we have a much bigger problem.""
Benjamin took the document.
His eyes moved across the signature.
Then stopped.
For the first time that evening, the billionaire looked genuinely shocked.
Because the person who had signed away those guest privileges wasn't a Whitmore.
May you like
It was someone from his own company.
And beneath that signature was a clause that could change everything Naomi thought she knew about the hotel—and about the reason her father had come to New Orleans in the first place.
