Chapter 2 - The Room Behind the WallThe lock clicked.

I stared at it.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Then Lily screamed, “Mom!”

Vanessa grabbed her shoulder.

“Lily, stay back,” Vanessa said.

I shoved the hidden door open.

The hinges cried out.

A breath of cold, stale air rolled across my face.

Beyond the doorway was darkness.

Not the cramped cavity I expected.

A corridor.

A real corridor, wide enough for a person to walk through, disappearing into the blackness behind the west wing.

My phone flashlight trembled in my hand.

“Claire?”

Nothing.

Then I heard it again.

A ragged breath.

Somewhere down the passage.

Lily tried to run past me.

I caught her around the waist.

“Dad!”

“It’s okay.”

“But Mom is there!”

“I know.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

I knew.

I knew because no one else in the world had that voice.

No one else stretched the last syllable of Lily’s name that way.

No one else whispered her name as if saying it could keep her alive.

Vanessa stood behind us, frozen.

“Close the door,” she whispered.

I turned.

“What?”

“Daniel, close it.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever is down there doesn’t want you there.”

I laughed once.

There was nothing funny about it.

“You just told me Claire was supposed to be dead.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You said, ‘She wasn’t supposed to wake up.’”

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I know.”

“What does that mean?”

She looked toward the hallway.

“We need to leave this room.”

“No.”

“Daniel—”

“No.”

I placed Lily behind my left side and stepped into the passage.

The floor beneath my shoes was stone.

Old stone.

The walls were lined with rough wooden beams, and tiny bulbs ran along the ceiling at uneven intervals. Most were dead. The few that still worked gave off a weak yellow flicker.

Someone had built this place deliberately.

Recently.

It smelled of bleach.

And metal.

And something medicinal.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew this was here.”

She said nothing.

“Vanessa.”

“I knew there was a passage.”

My jaw tightened.

“How long?”

She rubbed both hands over her face.

“Since last winter.”

Lily whimpered.

“Dad, don’t leave me.”

I reached behind me and took her hand.

“I’m right here.”

We moved deeper.

Every step felt wrong.

The house above us was familiar. Warm. Beautiful. The place where Claire and I had brought Lily home from the hospital. The kitchen where we had danced while cooking dinner. The staircase where Claire had once sat for an hour because Lily had fallen asleep on her chest.

And beneath all of it—

this.

A hidden corridor.

I heard water dripping somewhere.

Then a soft mechanical hum.

At the end of the corridor stood another door.

Unlike the first one, this door was white.

Clean.

Modern.

There was a keypad beside it.

Four numbers.

Vanessa stopped.

“You have the code,” I said.

“No.”

“You do.”

“I don’t.”

I looked at the keypad.

Then at her.

“You were in this house after Claire disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“You helped investigators.”

“Yes.”

“You came into this wing.”

“Yes.”

“And nobody ever found this?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“It was concealed behind the wardrobe.”

I stepped closer to her.

“Who built it?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

Lily suddenly pulled on my hand.

“Dad.”

“What?”

She pointed at the keypad.

“There.”

A small red light was blinking.

Then the speaker crackled.

A voice came through.

“Daniel?”

My knees nearly gave out.

Claire.

I knew it.

My wife’s voice came through the little speaker, thin and distorted.

“Daniel, don’t open the door.”

I stopped breathing.

“Claire?”

Lily pressed both hands against her mouth.

“Mom!”

The speaker crackled.

“Oh my God.”

Claire sounded like she was crying.

“Lily?”

“Yes!” Lily shouted.

I dropped to my knees beside her.

“Mom is here.”

“Daddy, tell her I’m here!”

I pressed the intercom button.

“Claire, it’s me. I’m here. Lily is here. We’re getting you out.”

“No.”

The word was immediate.

Terrified.

“Do not open this door.”

“Claire, what happened?”

A long silence.

Then she whispered, “How did you find the room?”

I looked at Vanessa.

Her eyes were closed.

“Lily heard you.”

Silence.

“She heard you through the wall.”

Claire began to cry.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“Who is with you?”

I glanced at Vanessa.

“Vanessa.”

The crying stopped.

Not gradually.

Completely.

When Claire spoke again, her voice had changed.

“Get her away from the door.”

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Claire,” she whispered.

The speaker crackled.

“Do not let Vanessa inside.”

Lily looked between them.

“Why?”

Claire said nothing.

I stared at Vanessa.

She looked as if someone had struck her.

“Tell me why,” I said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“Not here.”

Claire’s voice came through again.

“She helped put me here.”

Everything inside me went numb.

Vanessa whispered, “Claire, please.”

“You want him to believe you?” Claire said. “Tell him what you did.”

“I was trying to save you.”

“No.”

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?”

She covered her mouth.

I could see the muscles in her jaw trembling.

“Daniel, I didn’t hurt her.”

“You helped hide her.”

“I didn’t know how long it would take.”

“What would take?”

Vanessa looked at the locked door.

“To make them stop looking.”

My stomach twisted.

“Who are ‘they’?”

She shook her head.

“I can’t tell you.”

Claire laughed bitterly through the speaker.

“You see?”

I stared at the white door.

“Claire, who is keeping you there?”

No answer.

“Claire?”

A sound came from behind the door.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Deliberate.

I stepped back.

Lily whispered, “That’s the same knocking.”

Then Claire spoke so softly I almost didn't hear her.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

“I’m listening.”

“Whatever Vanessa tells you next, don’t believe her.”

Vanessa flinched.

“Claire—”

“Especially about the night I disappeared.”

My pulse began pounding.

The night Claire disappeared.

I remembered it in pieces.

Claire had kissed Lily goodnight.

She had come downstairs around ten.

She was wearing the blue sweater I loved.

She told me she felt tired.

At 10:32, I went upstairs to answer a work call.

At 11:07, I came back down.

Claire was gone.

Her phone was on the kitchen counter.

Her keys were in the bowl.

Her car was in the garage.

And the front door was locked from the inside.

At the time, I had assumed she had found another way out.

Now I looked at Vanessa.

“You know what happened that night.”

She began to shake.

“Daniel…”

“What happened?”

“She called me.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“When?”

“Ten twenty-four.”

“Eight minutes before I went upstairs?”

Vanessa nodded.

“What did she say?”

“She said someone had been following her.”

“Who?”

“She didn’t know.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Vanessa looked toward the ceiling.

Then she whispered, “From the people who were watching the house.”

I stared at her.

“You’re telling me someone was watching our family, and you kept that from me for eighteen months?”

“They were watching Claire.”

“And now?”

Her lips trembled.

“Now they know you found the door.”

A metallic click sounded somewhere behind us.

I turned.

At the far end of the corridor, where we'd entered, the hidden door was slowly swinging shut.

I hadn't touched it.

“Vanessa,” I said.

She went pale.

“They sealed it.”

“What?”

“They must have heard us.”

The door slammed.

Lily screamed.

I ran back and grabbed the handle.

It wouldn't move.

I pulled harder.

Nothing.

“Dad!”

“I've got you.”

I threw my shoulder against the wood.

Once.

Twice.

On the third impact, something cracked.

Not the door.

Something behind it.

A low electronic beep sounded from the other side.

Then every light in the corridor went out.

Darkness swallowed us.

Lily was crying against my leg.

Vanessa whispered, “Don't move.”

“Why?”

“Because if the lights went out…”

She stopped.

I heard her breathing.

Then a tiny sound.

A camera lens clicking into focus.

I raised my phone flashlight.

The beam swept across the corridor.

At the far end, a red light had appeared.

A small security camera.

And beneath it, a speaker.

A man's voice came through.

Calm.

Almost polite.

“Mr. Mercer, step away from the door.”

I froze.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

The man continued.

“You've been looking for your wife for eighteen months.”

I couldn't speak.

Lily whispered, “Dad…”

The voice became colder.

“You finally found her.”

May you like

A pause.

“Now you need to decide which one of you leaves this house alive.”
