Chapter 1: The Woman They Threw Out

“You can’t wait here without clearance.””

The slap cracked through the marble lobby of St. Catherine’s Private Medical Center.

For one horrifying second, everything stopped.

A newborn began screaming.

And a young mother sat on the polished floor, one arm wrapped protectively around her three-day-old baby, while the woman who had struck her straightened the sleeves of her pink designer blazer.

Nobody moved.

Nobody helped.

A few visitors exchanged uncomfortable looks. One man lowered his coffee cup. A woman near the reception desk actually laughed before covering her mouth.

The mother blinked through tears.

Her name was Naomi Carter.

She was twenty-nine years old, had deep mahogany skin, a short coily afro, and a gentle round face that now looked pale with shock. She wore a beige sweater, dark jeans, and inexpensive sneakers. A small diaper tote rested beside her.

Her baby, a little boy named Elijah, was only three days old.

And she had come to the hospital for one simple reason.

She wanted to visit her father.

Instead, she had just been slapped in front of a hundred strangers.

“Ma’am, you need to leave the lobby,” a man announced.

He was standing beside the woman in pink. His gray business suit was perfectly pressed, and his hospital identification badge identified him as Daniel Brooks, Assistant Patient Services Director.

Naomi looked up at him.

“Please,” she whispered.

“I’m not causing any trouble. My father is a patient here.””

The woman in pink folded her arms.

Her name was Vanessa Whitmore, the hospital's patient-services manager.

Vanessa glanced at Naomi's sneakers, then at the diaper bag.

“Your father?”” she repeated.

“Yes. Mr. Robert Carter. He’s recovering upstairs.””

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“Do you have any idea how many people come into this building claiming to know important patients?””

Naomi adjusted Elijah against her chest.

“I have his room number. I can show you.””

“Daniel,” Vanessa said without looking away from Naomi, “please explain the visitor policy.””

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Ma’am, visiting privileges require authorization. You need to leave the lobby.””

“But I was told I could come.””

“By whom?””

Naomi hesitated.

“My father.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Listen carefully. This is a private medical center, not a public shelter. You're holding up the waiting area.””

The words landed harder than the slap.

Naomi stared at her.

“I'm holding my newborn. I'm not holding anything up.””

Vanessa's expression tightened.

“Don't get smart with me.””

“I haven't done anything wrong.””

“You're arguing with hospital management.””

Naomi looked around, searching the faces of the people watching.

A middle-aged woman near the elevators finally stepped forward.

“Excuse me,” she said quietly.

“The baby is crying. Could somebody at least help her stand?””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Ma'am, please stay out of an internal administrative matter.””

The woman stopped.

Daniel looked down at his tablet.

“Vanessa, we should probably verify the patient's information before—”

“I said she needs to leave.””

Naomi's hands were trembling.

She had spent the morning trying to get Elijah settled after a difficult delivery. Her stitches still hurt whenever she moved too quickly. She had barely slept. Her father had insisted she come to see him because he wanted to meet his grandson properly.

He had even sent a message that morning.

Bring my little man upstairs. Grandpa has been waiting.

Naomi had smiled when she read it.

Now she was sitting on the floor of the hospital where he was recovering, wondering how she could possibly explain what had happened.

She reached for her phone.

Vanessa noticed.

“Who are you calling?””

“My father.””

“Don't make this more complicated.””

Naomi pressed the call button.

The phone rang twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Baby girl?””

Naomi tried to speak, but her voice broke.

“Dad…”

Robert Carter immediately heard the difference.

“What happened?””

Naomi looked at the manager.

“Dad, they hit me and they're making us leave.””

There was silence.

Then Robert's voice changed.

“Who hit you?””

Naomi swallowed.

“The woman at reception. She slapped me. Elijah's crying, and they won't let us upstairs.””

“Are you hurt?””

“I'm okay. The baby is okay.””

“Where are you?””

“In the main lobby.””

“Listen to me, Naomi. Don't move. Stay with the baby. I'm coming.””

“Dad, please don't get upset.””

“I'm not upset with you, sweetheart. Stay where you are.””

The call ended.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Was that supposed to scare me?””

Naomi didn't answer.

Daniel leaned toward Vanessa.

“Maybe we should contact security.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Absolutely. Have them escort her out.””

A security guard approached from the far side of the lobby.

Naomi wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.

“Please don't touch my baby.””

The guard stopped a few feet away.

“Ma'am, nobody wants to hurt you. We just need you to cooperate.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Then why did she hit me?””

He had no answer.

The baby continued crying.

A young receptionist whispered to another employee, but Vanessa caught her.

“Something you want to share, Melissa?””

“No, ma'am.””

“Then get back to work.””

Naomi looked down at Elijah.

His tiny fingers had curled around the fabric of her sweater.

She kissed his forehead.

“It's okay, sweetheart,” she whispered.

“Mommy's here.””

Then she slowly raised her eyes toward the camera mounted above the reception desk.

Her voice was quiet, but every word was clear.

“Want to see what my dad is going to do to them? Hit like and check out part two in the first comment.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Your father isn't going to do anything.””

At that exact moment, the elevator doors opened.

A tall Black man in a dark charcoal suit stepped into the lobby.

He was in his early sixties, with silver at his temples and the kind of calm expression that made people instinctively step aside.

Behind him walked two senior executives and a hospital security supervisor.

The man looked across the lobby.

His eyes found Naomi.

Then he saw her sitting on the floor.

His face changed.

“Naomi?””

The mother looked up.

“Dad.””

Vanessa turned toward the sound.

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel's tablet slipped slightly in his hands.

The senior executive behind Robert whispered something to the security supervisor.

Vanessa stared at the approaching man.

She knew that face.

Everyone in the building knew that face.

It was Robert Carter.
