Chapter 9: The Nurse Who Knew Everything

Robert arrived at Naomi's recovery room in less than ten minutes.

Two security officers followed him.

Margaret Ellis was right behind them.

Naomi was standing beside the bed, holding Elijah.

Her face was pale.

“Where is Patricia?”” Robert asked.

“She went toward the nurses' station.””

“Did she say anything else?””

Naomi shook her head.

“She looked at the photograph and started crying. Then she said she had waited three years for someone to ask her the right question.””

Robert looked at Margaret.

“Find her.””

The security officers moved into the corridor.

Robert turned back to Naomi.

“Are you sure she said she was the last person to see your mother alive?””

“Yes.””

“Did she explain?””

“No. She said she wanted to talk to you first.””

Robert looked at the photograph.

The image showed Patricia standing outside Evelyn's room.

The date was unmistakable.

Three years earlier.

Robert sat beside his daughter.

“Did she threaten you?””

“No.””

“Did she touch the baby?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you why she had the photograph?””

Naomi shook her head.

“She said she kept it because nobody believed her.””

Robert looked toward the corridor.

For three years, he had accepted the official explanation of his wife's death.

Now the people who had known the truth were appearing one by one.

And every one of them had been afraid.

Patricia Lewis was found in a small consultation room near the neonatal unit.

She was sitting alone.

Her hands were folded on the table.

When Robert entered, she stood immediately.

“Mr. Carter.””

“Sit down.””

Patricia obeyed.

Margaret closed the door.

Robert placed the photograph on the table.

“Explain.””

Patricia looked at it.

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

“James Bennett. Richard Whitmore. And the hospital administration.””

Robert leaned forward.

“You were the last person to see my wife alive?””

Patricia nodded.

“Yes.””

“Tell me what happened.””

Patricia took a long breath.

“Three years ago, I was assigned to the private recovery wing. Your wife had been admitted for monitoring after a complication.””

Robert remembered.

Evelyn had complained of dizziness and severe fatigue.

The doctors had assured him that she was stable.

He had gone home that evening because the medical team said she needed rest.

Patricia continued.

“She was awake when I checked on her. She asked me to bring her a glass of water.””

Robert listened without moving.

“She was worried about a medication change. She told me the dosage on her chart didn't match what her doctor had discussed with her.””

“Did you check?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Patricia looked toward Margaret.

“The medication order had been changed.””

Robert's voice became sharp.

“By whom?””

“Dr. Grant.””

Robert shook his head.

“Did you report it?””

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

Patricia's eyes filled.

“Dr. Grant told me the change had been approved by the attending physician. He said I was not authorized to question it.””

“Did Evelyn receive the medication?””

Patricia nodded.

“Yes.””

Robert gripped the edge of the table.

“What happened afterward?””

“About forty minutes later, she began having difficulty breathing.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Was emergency support called?””

“Yes. I pressed the emergency button.””

“And?””

Patricia's face tightened.

“The response was delayed.””

Robert stared.

“How long?””

“Almost seven minutes.””

“Seven minutes?””

Patricia nodded.

“I remember because I kept looking at the wall clock.””

Robert's voice dropped.

“Why was the response delayed?””

“Someone had entered an administrative hold in the emergency alert system.””

Margaret immediately took notes.

“Who?””

Patricia hesitated.

“James Bennett.””

Robert stood so quickly that his chair scraped backward.

“James was in the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He came to see Evelyn.””

“Did he know she was deteriorating?””

Patricia nodded.

“He was standing outside the room.””

Robert looked at the photograph again.

“Was Richard there too?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Robert slowly sat down.

“What did they do?””

Patricia looked at him.

“Richard told me to leave the room.””

Robert stared.

“You left?””

“I refused.””

“What happened?””

“He told me I would be fired if I didn't obey.””

Patricia's voice broke.

“I stayed with your wife.””

Robert looked away.

“And Dr. Grant?””

“He came in after the emergency team finally arrived. He ordered me to leave.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Patricia swallowed.

“I saw James hand him a folder.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“What was inside?””

“I don't know. But Dr. Grant looked at it and then changed something in the medical chart.””

Robert's face became expressionless.

“Did Evelyn survive?””

Patricia shook her head.

“No.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Patricia continued.

“Before she lost consciousness, she held my hand.””

Robert's eyes filled.

“What did she say?””

Patricia looked directly at him.

“She said, 'Tell Robert not to trust James. Tell him Naomi has the key.''”

Robert froze.

Naomi's key.

The silver key.

The one that had opened Evelyn's safety deposit box.

Patricia nodded.

“She also told me that she had left something for you.””

Margaret spoke quietly.

“Did you ever tell anyone this?””

Patricia nodded.

“I reported it to the hospital's internal compliance department.””

Robert looked at her.

“And?””

“They said there was no evidence of wrongdoing.””

“Who handled the complaint?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“Vanessa Whitmore.””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“Vanessa?””

“She told me I had misunderstood what I saw. Then she threatened to report me for violating patient privacy.””

“Did she?””

Patricia nodded.

“I was suspended for two weeks. When I returned, I was transferred to another department.””

Robert stared at her.

“And you kept quiet?””

Patricia looked toward the floor.

“I had two children. My husband had lost his job. I couldn't afford to lose mine.””

Robert's anger softened, but only slightly.

“Why did you stay at the hospital?””

Patricia wiped her eyes.

“Because I knew what Evelyn wanted. She wanted this place to help people.””

She looked toward the door.

“And when Naomi arrived yesterday, I recognized her immediately.””

Naomi stood quietly beside her father.

Patricia turned toward her.

“Your mother used to talk about you all the time. She showed me your photographs. She told me she wanted to be a grandmother.””

Naomi's lips trembled.

“Did she know about Elijah?””

Patricia smiled sadly.

“No. But she would have loved him.””

Naomi looked down at her baby.

Then she asked the question that had been haunting her.

“Did my mother suffer?””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I wish I could tell you she didn't.””

Naomi began crying.

Robert put an arm around her.

Patricia continued.

“She was conscious for part of the emergency response. She asked for you. She asked for your father.””

Robert lowered his head.

He remembered being at home.

He remembered receiving the call.

He remembered driving to the hospital, believing he was going to see his wife recover.

Instead, he had been shown a closed door.

He had never been allowed to see the medication records.

Never been given the complete emergency response report.

Never been told that the alert system had been delayed.

And now he knew why.

Margaret closed her notebook.

“Patricia, will you give a formal statement?””

Patricia nodded.

“Yes.””

“Will you testify if necessary?””

“Yes.””

Robert looked at her.

“Thank you.””

Patricia shook her head.

“I'm sorry it took so long.””

Robert didn't answer.

He couldn't.

At 4:30 p.m., Margaret received a call from the independent forensic team.

She listened for almost two minutes.

Then she looked at Robert.

“We have a problem.””

“What?””

“The medical records show the medication was changed through a physician's authorization account.””

Robert stood.

“Dr. Grant?””

“Yes.””

“Can they prove he made the change?””

“The account was accessed from his office.””

Margaret paused.

“But the security camera footage shows someone else entering his office that evening.””

“Who?””

Margaret handed Robert a printed image.

He stared at it.

The person entering Dr. Grant's office was James Bennett.

But the person leaving twenty minutes later was someone else.

A man wearing a hospital security uniform.

Robert recognized him.

It was the same security supervisor who had accompanied him into the lobby when he first arrived.

The man had stood beside Vanessa.

He had watched Naomi cry.

And he had helped Robert escort Marcus to the parking garage.

Robert looked up.

“Where is he now?””

Margaret checked her phone.

“According to the security schedule, he's assigned to the main lobby.””

Robert immediately called the police.

“Find him. His name is Peter Lawson. I want him located before he leaves the building.””

The investigator on the other end confirmed.

Robert ended the call.

Naomi looked frightened.

“Dad, how many people are involved?””

Robert glanced at the photograph.

“I don't know yet.””

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

You have the wrong man.

Robert stared at the screen.

A second message followed.

James Bennett didn't change Evelyn's medication.

Then a third.

He only delayed the emergency response.

Robert's heart began pounding.

He typed a reply.

Who changed it?

The response arrived immediately.

Look at the original medication order. The doctor who approved it was not Samuel Grant.

Robert turned toward Margaret.

“Get the original order.””

Minutes later, the forensic team sent the scanned document.

Robert enlarged the signature.

It was not Dr. Grant's.

It belonged to another physician.

A physician who had never been questioned.

A physician who had left the hospital shortly after Evelyn's death.

Margaret read the name.

Then she looked at Robert.

“Do you know this person?””

Robert stared at the screen.

His expression changed.

Because the physician who had authorized his wife's final medication order was none other than the man who had delivered Naomi as a newborn.

May you like

Dr. Michael Carter.

Robert's younger brother.
