Chapter 4: The Name Behind the Order
“Say that name again.””
Robert Carter stood beside the hospital window, his phone pressed tightly against his ear.
On the other side of the glass, rain began sliding down the windows of the private recovery floor. Below him, cars moved through the hospital entrance, their headlights reflecting against the wet pavement.
Eleanor Price sounded frightened.
“Richard Whitmore.””
Robert didn't move.
Richard Whitmore.
Vanessa's husband.
The hospital's former chief financial officer.
And the man Robert had personally recommended for a position on the foundation's investment committee.
For twenty-two years, Robert had considered Richard one of his closest professional friends.
“What does Richard have to do with my daughter?”” Robert asked.
Eleanor took a breath.
“Three weeks ago, I received instructions to restrict certain visitors from accessing the private recovery wing. The instructions came through an executive authorization request.””
“From Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“He said there were concerns about a potential security breach involving a patient.””
“Which patient?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Robert, it was you.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Me?””
“He claimed someone was attempting to access your medical records and that certain family members might be involved.””
Robert looked toward Naomi.
His daughter was sitting on the bed, gently rocking Elijah.
He lowered his voice.
“Are you telling me Richard Whitmore accused my daughter of being a security threat?””
“That's what the document suggests.””
“Did you believe him?””
“No. I questioned the request.””
“And what happened?””
“He told me the board had already approved the restrictions.””
Robert looked at the hospital's administrative building across the courtyard.
“Did you verify that?””
“I asked for the board resolution. He said it would be sent later.””
“Did it ever arrive?””
“No.””
Robert closed his eyes.
For the first time that afternoon, he felt something more dangerous than anger.
He felt betrayed.
“Eleanor, I need you to listen carefully. Preserve every email, every authorization request, and every access log. Don't delete anything. Don't discuss this with Richard or Vanessa.””
“Robert, I should tell you something else.””
“What?””
“The original restriction order wasn't created three weeks ago.””
He waited.
“It was created five months ago.””
Robert turned around.
“Five months?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Eleanor's voice dropped.
“Because someone wanted to prevent Naomi from accessing your private records.””
Robert stared at his daughter.
Five months ago, Naomi had been pregnant.
Five months ago, she had called him crying after receiving a strange message from an unknown number.
Someone had claimed that Robert was hiding something from her.
He had dismissed it as a misunderstanding.
Now the pieces were beginning to connect.
“Eleanor, send me the original document.””
“I will.””
Robert ended the call.
Naomi noticed his expression.
“Dad?””
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
“I need to ask you something.””
She adjusted Elijah's blanket.
“Okay.””
“Have you had any problems with Vanessa Whitmore or her husband before today?””
Naomi looked confused.
“No. I've never met either of them.””
“Has anyone contacted you about me? Anyone asking questions about your relationship with me?””
Her expression changed.
After a moment, she reached for her diaper tote.
“There is something.””
She pulled out an envelope.
“I didn't know whether to tell you.””
Robert took it.
Inside were three printed emails.
The first was dated five months earlier.
The sender's name was unfamiliar.
The subject line read:
*A PRIVATE WARNING ABOUT YOUR FATHER.*
Robert began reading.
The message claimed that his daughter was financially dependent on him and that she might be included in a legal dispute involving the hospital.
The second email was more disturbing.
It contained a photograph of Robert entering a board meeting.
The third had only one sentence.
If you care about your child, stop asking questions about your father's business.
Robert looked up.
“Why didn't you show me these?””
Naomi's eyes filled.
“Because I thought you were already dealing with something. You were recovering from surgery, and every time I called, you sounded exhausted.””
“Naomi, you should have told me.””
“I didn't want to become another problem you had to solve.””
Robert sat beside her.
“You are not a problem.””
He took her hand.
“You're my daughter.””
Naomi looked down.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
He held her hand for a moment.
Then he asked, “Did you keep the original emails?””
“Yes. They're still on my old laptop.””
“Good. Don't delete anything.””
A knock interrupted them.
Marcus Hill entered carrying a thick folder.
“Mr. Carter, we have something.””
Robert stood.
“What?””
Marcus placed the folder on the table.
“We recovered the lobby footage and the original visitor authorization records. We also found evidence that the audio deletion attempt began less than four minutes after the incident.””
“Who initiated it?””
“Daniel Brooks.””
Robert nodded.
“And Vanessa?””
“She accessed the visitor management system twice this morning. Both times, she used Eleanor Price's credentials.””
Naomi looked at Marcus.
“So she knew I was coming?””
Marcus hesitated.
“The records indicate that your visit was approved yesterday. At 8:42 this morning, someone changed the access instructions.””
Robert opened the folder.
A printed screenshot showed the authorization history.
The first entry had been approved by his executive assistant.
The second entry had been altered by an administrative account.
The final entry was marked:
*RESTRICTED — EXECUTIVE REQUEST.*
Robert looked at Marcus.
“Who had access to the executive request system?””
“Six people.””
“Names.””
Marcus handed him another sheet.
Robert scanned the list.
His eyes stopped at the fourth name.
Richard Whitmore.
Before he could speak, Naomi's phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
She hesitated.
Robert nodded for her to answer.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
“Mrs. Carter? My name is Denise. I work in the hospital's medical records department.””
Naomi sat straighter.
“Okay.””
“I need to tell you something before my supervisor finds out I contacted you.””
Robert moved closer.
“What's wrong?””
Denise continued.
“Your father's medical records were accessed several times over the last five months. Some of the access attempts were legitimate. Others were not.””
Naomi looked at Robert.
“Who accessed them?””
“I can't say everything over the phone. But I found a document attached to one of the requests.””
“What document?””
“A confidential family authorization.””
Naomi frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Denise lowered her voice.
“It says your father authorized the hospital to restrict your access to his records and his private recovery room.””
Robert's face hardened.
“That is false.””
Denise heard him.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes. I never signed anything like that.””
There was a pause.
“Then you need to see the document.””
“Where is it?””
“I printed a copy. But there's something else.””
“What?””
Denise whispered:
“The signature belongs to someone who died eleven months ago.””
The call ended.
Robert stared at Naomi.
Marcus slowly closed the folder.
Nobody spoke.
Then Robert looked toward the corridor.
“Marcus, lock down the records department. Nobody leaves with original documents until we establish what happened.””
Marcus nodded.
“And get me the board secretary.””
Robert turned back to his daughter.
“Naomi, we're going to find out who did this.””
She looked at the sleeping baby.
“Dad, what if it's worse than we think?””
Robert looked at the envelope in his hand.
“Then we'll find out how much worse.””
His phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
Mr. Carter, if you want to know why your daughter was targeted, ask who changed the hospital's ownership records eleven months ago.
Robert read the message twice.
Then another notification appeared.
It contained an attached photograph.
A photograph of his daughter, taken outside her apartment.

And beneath it were five words.
