Chapter 1: The Woman They Humiliated

“YOU CAN’T BLOCK THE ENTRANCE!””

The slap echoed through the marble atrium.

A newborn screamed.

And three hundred shoppers watched a woman in a beige trench coat fall to the floor while a woman in a pink designer suit stood over her, looking more annoyed than remorseful.

Nobody knew that the woman they were laughing at was the daughter of the man who owned the entire shopping mall.

And nobody knew that her father was already on his way.

My name is Naomi Carter. I was twenty-nine years old, six weeks into motherhood, and running on approximately three hours of sleep.

That Saturday afternoon, all I wanted was to buy a bottle warmer and a few things for my son, Elijah.

He was sleeping against my chest in his soft blue blanket, his tiny fingers curled around the strap of my crossbody diaper bag.

I had dressed simply. A beige trench coat, black leggings, white sneakers, and my hair in a short natural tapered cut.

I didn't look wealthy.

I didn't look important.

And apparently, that was enough for someone to decide I didn't belong.

The trouble began near the main entrance of Sterling Crown Mall, one of the most expensive shopping destinations in the city.

The atrium was breathtaking.

A massive crystal chandelier hung above the polished marble floor. Luxury boutiques lined the upper levels. A pianist played near the fountain while shoppers carried glossy bags from designer stores.

I had stopped near the entrance because Elijah had started fussing.

I needed to adjust his blanket.

I wasn't blocking the doors. There was plenty of room for people to walk around me.

But a woman in a vivid pink suit approached with two security employees trailing behind her.

She had perfectly styled blonde hair, oversized sunglasses resting on her head, and a name badge that read:

*VICTORIA HAYES — MALL OPERATIONS MANAGER.*

She looked at me as if I'd brought mud into her living room.

"Excuse me," Victoria snapped.

I looked up.

"Yes?""

"You're standing in a restricted entrance area.""

I glanced around.

"Sorry. I'm just adjusting my baby's blanket. I'll move in a second.""

Victoria folded her arms.

"I don't think you understand. This is a premium shopping entrance, not a place to sit around with children.""

I blinked.

"I haven't sat down. I'm standing.""

A few shoppers slowed their steps.

Victoria noticed them watching.

Her expression changed.

She seemed to enjoy having an audience.

"Well, you're certainly creating an obstruction.""

I shifted Elijah higher against my chest.

"There's an entire walkway behind me. Nobody is being blocked.""

Her assistant, a white man in a gray security uniform named Daniel Price, stepped closer.

"Ma'am, just cooperate with the manager.""

I stared at him.

"Cooperate with what? I'm leaving.""

Victoria laughed without humor.

"People like you always have an excuse.""

My stomach tightened.

"People like me?""

She leaned closer.

"Don't make this difficult.""

I turned slightly, protecting Elijah's head with my hand.

"Please lower your voice. You're frightening my baby.""

That was when Victoria slapped me.

Hard.

My cheek burned.

My balance disappeared.

I stumbled backward and landed seated on the cold marble floor, twisting my body so Elijah remained protected against my chest.

His blanket slipped.

He began crying.

Not a little cry.

A terrified, breathless scream.

"Oh my God!"" someone shouted.

But instead of helping, several shoppers raised their phones.

A young man in a designer hoodie laughed.

"Yo, she actually fell!""

A woman beside him whispered loudly, "Maybe she shouldn't bring a baby into places like this.""

I felt something warm against my cheek.

My hand shook as I checked Elijah.

He was frightened, but safe.

"Shh, sweetheart. Mommy's here.""

Victoria straightened her pink jacket.

"That was your own fault.""

I looked up at her.

"You just hit me. While I'm holding a newborn.""

She rolled her eyes.

"You're being dramatic.""

Daniel approached and pointed toward the exit.

"You need to come with us.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Why? She assaulted me!""

Victoria gave a theatrical sigh.

"You're making everyone uncomfortable.""

I looked around.

People were still recording.

Nobody was asking whether my baby was okay.

Nobody was asking why a manager had struck a woman holding an infant.

Daniel reached toward my arm.

"Come on. Let's go.""

"Don't touch me.""

He stopped.

I slowly pushed myself upright, keeping Elijah close.

My cheek throbbed. My knees hurt. My hands were trembling.

But something inside me had gone quiet.

I knew exactly what I needed to do.

I reached into my diaper bag and pulled out my phone.

Victoria laughed.

"Are you calling the police?""

"No," I said.

I found one contact.

DAD.

I pressed the call button.

He answered before the second ring.

"Naomi?""

My voice broke.

"Dad, they hit me and they're kicking us out.""

There was silence.

Then his voice changed.

"What?""

I looked at Victoria.

"I'm at Sterling Crown. A manager slapped me while I was holding Elijah. Her security assistant is trying to remove me.""

My father's breathing became audible.

"Is your son hurt?""

"No. He's crying, but he's okay.""

"Are you hurt?""

"My cheek.""

Another silence.

Then he said four words.

"I'm on my way. Stay there.""

The call ended.

Victoria chuckled.

"Well, whoever you called, tell him not to waste his afternoon.""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Ma'am, you should really leave before this becomes a bigger problem.""

I looked at him.

"It already is.""

I wiped my cheek with the back of my hand.

Then I looked directly into the nearest phone camera.

"Want to see what my dad is going to do to them? Hit like and check out part two in the first comment.""

Behind me, the automatic entrance doors suddenly opened.

A group of men in dark suits walked inside.

At their center was an older Black man with silver at his temples, a charcoal overcoat, and an expression that could freeze an entire room.

He was accompanied by the mall's chief security officer.

Victoria turned.

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel looked at the approaching man.

Then he looked at Victoria.

His face lost its color.

"Mr. Carter?""

Victoria's lips parted.

The older man didn't answer.

He walked straight toward me.

"Naomi?""

I stood carefully.

"Dad.""

He looked at my cheek.

Then at Elijah.

Then at the manager in pink.

His jaw tightened.

May you like

"Who," he asked quietly, "put their hands on my daughter?""

And for the first time that afternoon, Victoria Hayes looked genuinely afraid.
