Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Kept for Twelve Years
My father had never been afraid of difficult conversations.
He had told me when our family was struggling financially.
He had told me when his first business failed.
He had even told me the truth about my mother's illness when I was twelve, though he had waited until I was old enough to understand it.
But now he couldn't look me in the eye.
"Naomi," he said quietly, "your aunt is using your mother's memory to manipulate you.""
"Then tell me what she's talking about.""
He sat down.
I sat opposite him.
Elijah was asleep in the nursery upstairs.
For once, the house was quiet.
Dad rubbed his hands together.
"After your mother died, I made a decision about the family trust.""
"What decision?""
"I removed your name from one of the voting-beneficiary schedules.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because you were twelve. I wanted your inheritance protected until you were an adult.""
"But Danielle says you removed me permanently.""
"That's not true.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
He looked down.
"Because I never wanted you to grow up believing your mother's death had turned you into a financial asset.""
I swallowed.
He continued.
"Your mother and I built that trust together. She wanted you to have choices. Education, security, the freedom to build your own life.""
I looked at him.
"Then why did you change the documents?""
"Because Danielle challenged the original arrangement.""
I froze.
"What?""
Dad nodded.
"Your mother had given you a significant beneficial interest. Danielle believed that because she was your mother's sister, she deserved a portion of it.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Aunt Danielle challenged Mom's wishes?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"About twelve years ago.""
I remembered that period.
I remembered family arguments behind closed doors.
I remembered Dad spending long nights in his office.
I remembered Aunt Danielle visiting less frequently.
But nobody had explained why.
Dad continued.
"Danielle claimed your mother had promised her a share of the family assets. There was no written agreement supporting that claim.""
"What happened?""
"We settled the dispute privately. I reorganized the trust to protect your beneficial interest until you were older.""
I stared at him.
"So she has been angry about this for twelve years?""
"Perhaps.""
I shook my head.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought the matter was finished.""
I looked at the message again.
Danielle had known exactly where to hurt me.
She had used my mother.
She had used my newborn.
She had used my trust.
And she had done it all while pretending to be the loving aunt who brought flowers to the hospital.
Dad reached for my hand.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at him.
"For what?""
"For keeping too much from you.""
I squeezed his fingers.
"I don't need you to hide things to protect me.""
He nodded.
"I know that now.""
At noon, Richard arranged an emergency meeting with the independent legal team.
The agenda was simple.
Establish the chain of events.
Preserve evidence.
Determine whether corporate funds had been misused.
And protect the people who had been threatened.
Tasha Williams joined remotely.
Evelyn Brooks agreed to provide her complaint records.
Two former mall employees had also contacted the investigators.
One was a security officer named Kevin Miller.
The other was a customer service supervisor named Lisa Grant.
Both claimed they had been instructed to remove customers based on appearance rather than behavior.
The evidence was beginning to form a pattern.
But there was still one missing piece.
Robert Ellis.
The mall's chief security officer.
The man who had helped my father uncover the footage.
The man who had photographed himself meeting Adrian.
And the man who had sent the message warning us about Danielle.
He had disappeared.
His company phone went directly to voicemail.
His apartment was empty.
His vehicle was still parked at the mall.
Richard frowned when he heard the update.
"That's concerning.""
Dad looked at Robert's photograph.
"Find him.""
"We're trying.""
"Don't involve anyone who might be connected to Adrian.""
Richard nodded.
Then Margaret entered with a printed email.
"Mr. Carter, we've received a response from Robert's personal account.""
Dad stood.
"Read it.""
Margaret hesitated.
"He says he wants to meet you privately.""
"Where?""
"At the old Sterling Crown service garage.""
Dad looked toward Richard.
"That's on company property.""
Richard nodded.
"We can arrange a monitored meeting with appropriate security.""
Margaret continued.
"He also says he has evidence that will identify who actually ordered Naomi's surveillance.""
I felt my heartbeat accelerate.
Dad looked at me.
"You stay here.""
"Dad—"
"No. This is too dangerous to bring you into.""
I opened my mouth.
Then Elijah cried through the nursery monitor.
I looked toward the stairs.
Dad softened.
"Take care of your son. Let us handle this.""
I nodded reluctantly.
At 2:40 p.m., Dad and Richard left for the service garage.
Margaret stayed with me.
I spent the next twenty minutes walking around the living room with Elijah against my shoulder.
His tiny fingers rested against my collar.
I kissed his forehead.
"Everything is going to be okay, sweetheart.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I noticed the area code.
It was local.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A familiar voice spoke.
"Naomi, it's Danielle.""
My entire body stiffened.
"What do you want?""
"I need to explain.""
"You had twelve years to explain.""
She sighed.
"I made mistakes.""
"You forged my signature.""
"I didn't forge anything.""
"The examiner says the signature was reproduced.""
She went silent.
Then she said something I wasn't expecting.
"Your father knew the trust paperwork was being changed.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"He knew there was a transfer document.""
"You're lying.""
"Ask him.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Why are you doing this?""
"Because Marcus has never told you the whole story.""
"Then tell me.""
She lowered her voice.
"Your mother left a sealed letter.""
I froze.
"What letter?""
"One addressed to you.""
I looked toward the staircase.
"Where is it?""
"Your father has it.""
My heart began pounding.
"Why?""
"Because he doesn't want you to know what your mother wanted.""
I shook my head.
"That's not true.""
"Then ask him why he never gave it to you.""
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
A moment later, another message appeared.
*I CAN PROVE IT. COME TO MY HOUSE.*
I didn't respond.
Instead, I called Dad.
He answered immediately.
"Naomi?""
"Aunt Danielle just called.""
His voice changed.
"What did she say?""
"She says Mom left me a sealed letter.""
Silence.
"Dad?""
He exhaled.
"Where did you hear that?""
"From her.""
He didn't answer.
"Is it true?""
A long pause followed.
Then he said:
"Yes.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I wasn't ready.""
"Ready for what?""
He sounded exhausted.
"Your mother wrote it during her final weeks. She asked me to give it to you when you turned twenty-one.""
I closed my eyes.
"I'm twenty-nine, Dad.""
"I know.""
"Why didn't you give it to me?""
He was silent.
Then he said:
"Because the letter named someone your mother believed was trying to destroy our family.""
My mouth went dry.
"Who?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he whispered:
"Danielle.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Then why are you protecting her?""
"I'm not protecting her, Naomi.""
"Then what are you protecting?""
He exhaled.
"Your mother's last wishes.""
Before I could respond, he continued.
"Listen to me. I have the letter. When I return, you'll read it.
But don't meet Danielle. Don't go anywhere with her. And don't tell her what I just said.""
I nodded even though he couldn't see me.
"Okay.""
He lowered his voice.
"Something else. Richard and I are with Robert now.""
"Did you find him?""
"Yes.""
"Is he okay?""
Dad hesitated.
"He's shaken. But he's alive.""
I relaxed slightly.
Then I heard a loud noise through the phone.
A door slamming.
Someone shouting.
Dad's voice changed.
"Richard, get down!""
The call went dead.
I stared at my phone.
"Dad?""
No answer.
I called again.
Straight to voicemail.
My hands began shaking.
I picked up Elijah and moved toward the hallway.
Margaret rushed into the room.
"What happened?""
"The call dropped. Something happened at the garage.""
She immediately contacted the security team.
Within seconds, two guards were on their way.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Dad.
*WE'RE SAFE. DO NOT PANIC.*
I exhaled.
Another message followed.
*ROBERT HAS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.*
Then a third.
*DANIELLE WASN'T THE PERSON WHO ORDERED THE SURVEILLANCE.*
I stared at the screen.
A fourth message appeared.
*SHE WAS FOLLOWING SOMEONE ELSE'S INSTRUCTIONS.*
I felt cold.
Who else could have been involved?
My phone rang again.
This time, it was Dad.
"Naomi?""
"Dad! Are you okay?""
"I'm fine. Richard is fine too.""
"What happened?""
"Someone tried to take Robert's evidence. Security stopped them.""
"Who?""
Dad hesitated.
"An individual claiming to represent corporate legal.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was it Adrian?""
"No.""
"Then who?""
Dad's voice dropped.
"Elaine Porter.""
I froze.
The chairwoman.
The woman who had brought us the bank statements.
The woman who had promised to help.
The woman who had appeared to stand against Adrian.
Dad continued.
"Robert's recording shows Elaine meeting Danielle in a private office two nights before the mall incident.""
I covered my mouth.
"But Elaine helped us.""
"That's what I thought.""
He paused.
"Robert says the recording contains a conversation between them.""
"What did they say?""
Dad took a breath.
"Danielle was asking for more money.""
"And Elaine?""
"She told her the transfer would happen after the mall incident.""
I felt sick.
"After the incident?""
"Yes.""
Then Dad said the words that changed everything.
"Naomi, Victoria wasn't the person they wanted to destroy that day.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"They wanted to destroy my reputation. They wanted to make the company believe I was unfit to lead. The incident with you was supposed to become the beginning of a much larger scandal.""
I looked down at Elijah.
His little face was peaceful.
I couldn't understand how anyone could use a newborn baby as part of a corporate power struggle.
Then Dad spoke again.
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
"Robert says Elaine has the original copy of your mother's letter.""
My heart stopped.
"Why would she have Mom's letter?""
Dad's voice became almost inaudible.
"Because she was the person your mother trusted to keep it safe.""
I sat down slowly.
The letter my mother had written twelve years earlier.
The letter that supposedly named Danielle.
The letter that my father had hidden.
And now it was in the possession of the woman who had secretly been working with my aunt.
Suddenly, my father's phone crackled.
I heard Richard's voice in the background.
"Marcus, you need to see this.""
Dad responded.
"What?""
Richard spoke quickly.
"The original recording doesn't just identify Elaine.""
A pause.
Then he said:
"It identifies the person who gave her the instructions.""
Dad stopped breathing.
"Who?""
Richard answered.
And even through the phone, I could hear the shock in his voice.
"Your mother was right about one person, Marcus.""
Dad whispered:
"That's impossible.""
Then Richard said the name.
*"Your wife.""*
I couldn't move.
My mother had been dead for twelve years.
How could she possibly have given anyone instructions?
And what exactly had my father been hiding about the final weeks of her life?
The phone went silent.
Upstairs, Elijah began crying.
I held him closer, staring at the dark screen.
For the first time since the incident at Sterling Crown, I wasn't thinking about Victoria, Adrian, or Aunt Danielle.
I was thinking about the woman whose face I could barely remember without looking at photographs.
May you like
My mother.
And the possibility that the biggest secret in our family had been buried long before I ever walked into that mall.
