Chapter 5: The Secret File With My Name On It
Margaret Lewis had worked for my father for eleven years.
She was organized, discreet, and almost impossible to surprise.
I had seen her manage million-dollar negotiations while answering three phones and correcting a legal document.
But now her hands were shaking.
Dad gestured toward the chair.
"Margaret, sit down.""
She placed the folder on the table.
"I found this in the executive archive.""
Dad opened it.
The first page contained my name.
*NAOMI CARTER — FAMILY CLASSIFICATION REPORT.*
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What is that?""
Margaret looked at me.
"I'm sorry, Naomi.""
Dad turned the page.
There were photographs of me.
Some were from public events.
Others appeared to have been taken without my knowledge.
One showed me leaving a pediatric clinic with Elijah.
Another showed me standing outside a grocery store.
A third was taken in the parking garage beneath my apartment building.
I immediately pulled Elijah closer.
"Who took these?""
Margaret swallowed.
"The report doesn't identify the photographer. But the photographs were uploaded into the company's executive surveillance archive.""
Dad's expression became frighteningly calm.
"Why would my daughter's personal movements be in a corporate surveillance system?""
Margaret opened another section.
"Because someone created a special monitoring category for immediate family members.""
She pointed to a paragraph.
*OBJECTIVE: TRACK MOVEMENTS, IDENTIFY ROUTINE VISITS, AND PREVENT UNAUTHORIZED INTERFERENCE WITH CORPORATE OPERATIONS.*
I looked at my father.
"Did you know about this?""
He shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you ask anyone to follow me?""
"Never.""
Margaret continued.
"There's more.""
She turned another page.
The report included a section about my financial circumstances.
My address.
My vehicle information.
My shopping habits.
And a note that made my hands go cold.
*NAOMI CARTER — LIMITED PUBLIC PROFILE. PREFERS NON-LUXURY ENVIRONMENTS. LIKELY TO AVOID PUBLIC CONFRONTATION.*
I looked up.
"They were studying me?""
Margaret nodded.
Dad closed the folder.
"Who authorized this?""
"Adrian Vale.""
The name hung in the air.
Dad leaned back.
For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.
"Adrian was supposed to be managing the company's expansion project.""
Margaret nodded.
"He used his executive access to request information about family members. He claimed it was for security purposes.""
"And you believed him?""
"I did at first.""
Dad looked at her.
"What changed?""
Margaret took a breath.
"Last night, I received an instruction to flag Naomi's visit to Sterling Crown.""
She pulled out her phone.
"I thought it was unusual, so I checked the original request.""
She showed us an email.
The subject line read:
*SATURDAY OPERATION — NAOMI CARTER.*
I felt my throat tighten.
The message was short.
*She will arrive without an escort. Ensure the situation is handled before the owner becomes involved. We need to establish whether she will use the family name to demand special treatment.*
At the bottom was Adrian Vale's digital signature.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Dad.
"They wanted to see whether I would call you?""
He nodded slowly.
"That's what it looks like.""
"But why?""
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"Adrian has been trying to gain more control over the company's property division. He believes my involvement in family matters affects my business judgment.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?""
Margaret answered quietly.
"He's been telling members of the board that the company needs a new leadership structure.""
Dad looked at her.
"How long?""
"Several months.""
She hesitated.
"He's also been discussing your retirement.""
Dad gave a humorless laugh.
"I'm fifty-eight, not ninety.""
Nobody smiled.
I looked down at Elijah.
My baby had fallen asleep again.
His tiny chest rose and fell beneath his blue blanket.
The contrast was unbearable.
Someone had photographed him outside a pediatric clinic.
Someone had tracked where I went shopping.
Someone had arranged for a manager to receive my picture.
And when I arrived at the mall, that manager had slapped me.
I looked up.
"Did Adrian know Victoria would hit me?""
Margaret didn't answer.
That silence was enough to frighten me.
Dad stood.
"Where is he?""
Margaret checked her phone.
"His office. But he's scheduled to meet the board in forty minutes.""
Dad looked toward Robert.
"Cancel the meeting.""
Margaret shook her head.
"That's not possible.""
Dad frowned.
"Why?""
She opened her calendar.
"Because Adrian moved the meeting forward. The board members have already arrived.""
Dad stared at her.
"When did he do that?""
"This morning.""
A strange expression crossed my father's face.
He understood something before I did.
"He's trying to force a decision.""
Margaret nodded.
"There's a proposed resolution to transfer operational control of Sterling Crown and four other properties to Adrian's division.""
Dad looked toward the ceiling.
"Without my approval?""
"He's claiming the board has enough authority to proceed.""
Robert stepped closer.
"Sir, we should contact legal immediately.""
"Already.""
Dad looked at me.
"Naomi, I need you to go home.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Sweetheart, this could become complicated.""
"Someone followed me. Someone photographed my baby. Someone arranged for me to be humiliated in public. I'm not leaving until I know why.""
He looked at Elijah.
I softened my voice.
"I'm not asking you to put him in danger. I'll stay with Margaret and Robert. But I'm not going to pretend this didn't happen.""
Dad studied me.
Then he nodded.
"All right.""
Margaret opened the folder again.
"There's one more thing.""
Dad sighed.
"What now?""
She pulled out a printed document.
It was a corporate insurance agreement.
At first, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.
Then I noticed my name.
*BENEFICIARY: NAOMI CARTER.*
*COVERED EVENT: CHANGE OF CONTROL / FAMILY SUCCESSION TRANSITION.*
I looked at Dad.
"What is this?""
He read the page.
His expression changed.
"That's impossible.""
Margaret spoke quietly.
"Adrian submitted it for approval last week.""
Dad flipped through the pages.
There were references to my father's shares, family succession arrangements, and a proposed transfer of voting rights.
But the final page was worse.
It contained a forged signature.
My father's signature.
Dad stared at it.
"That's not mine.""
Margaret nodded.
"I know.""
He turned toward Robert.
"Call corporate legal. Immediately.""
Robert took out his phone.
Then a notification appeared on Margaret's screen.
She read it.
Her face went white.
"What?"" I asked.
She slowly turned the phone toward Dad.
It was a message from the board secretary.
*EMERGENCY BOARD RESOLUTION APPROVED. ADRIAN VALE APPOINTED INTERIM GROUP PRESIDENT, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.*
Dad read the message.
Then another notification arrived.
*ACCESS TO THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY REVOKED FOR MARCUS CARTER PENDING REVIEW.*
For the first time in my life, I watched my father look genuinely stunned.
He had built the company from a single property investment into a billion-dollar business.
And now someone had used his own company against him.
Margaret whispered, "Mr. Carter...""
Dad looked up.
"Call the board.""
"I already tried.""
"And?""
She swallowed.
"Adrian answered.""
Dad extended his hand for the phone.
Margaret handed it over.
He pressed the call button.
It rang twice.
Then a familiar voice answered.
"Marcus.""
Dad spoke calmly.
"Adrian. What have you done?""
The voice on the other end laughed.
"Nothing you didn't make necessary.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"You used my daughter's name.""
A pause.
Then Adrian replied.
"Your daughter has always been your weakness.""
My blood ran cold.
Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.
"Listen carefully. You have made a very serious mistake.""
Adrian laughed again.
"No, Marcus. For the first time in twelve years, I've finally made the right move.""
Then the call ended.
I looked at Dad.
He stared at the phone.
May you like
And I realized that the man who had promised to protect me was now fighting someone who knew every weakness in his business.
Someone who had once sat at our family dinner table.
