Chapter 6: The Boardroom Betrayal

At 3:17 p.m., my father's company officially stopped recognizing him as its acting chief executive.

At 3:19 p.m., his access card stopped working.

At 3:22 p.m., a security supervisor informed him that he was no longer authorized to enter the executive offices without permission.

I watched all of this happen from the passenger seat of a black SUV parked outside the corporate headquarters.

It was difficult to believe.

The same man who had built the company was being treated like an unwanted visitor.

My father sat beside me, reading documents on his tablet.

He had barely spoken since Adrian ended the call.

Elijah was sleeping in his carrier.

Margaret sat in the front passenger seat, speaking quietly with the company's legal department.

Finally, Dad looked up.

"Naomi.""

"Yes?""

"I want you to understand something.""

I turned toward him.

"What's that?""

"This isn't your fault.""

I swallowed.

"I know.""

He shook his head.

"No. I mean it. Adrian made a decision to use you as leverage.

Victoria made a decision to assault you. Daniel made a decision to help her. None of those decisions belong to you.""

I looked out the window.

"I keep thinking about that woman in the pink suit.""

"Victoria?""

"Yes. She looked at me like I was nothing.""

Dad nodded.

"People who measure human worth by appearance eventually forget that everyone deserves respect.""

I looked at him.

"Do you think she knew who I was?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why was my picture sent to her?""

Dad didn't answer.

Margaret turned around.

"Mr. Carter, legal has located the original email chain.""

Dad straightened.

"Who sent the first message?""

"Adrian.""

"Show me.""

Margaret passed him the tablet.

The email chain contained six messages.

The first had been sent three days earlier.

*FROM: ADRIAN VALE*

*TO: VICTORIA HAYES*

*SUBJECT: FAMILY VISIT — SATURDAY*

*Naomi Carter may visit Sterling Crown this weekend. She has been using the Carter name in ways that could complicate our current restructuring discussions. Please ensure operations are prepared.*

Victoria had replied:

*Understood. Would you like her visit handled discreetly?*

Adrian's response was chilling.

*No special treatment. We need to see whether she behaves like a normal customer when she is not being treated as an executive family member.*

I frowned.

"That doesn't sound like permission to hit me.""

Dad nodded.

"Correct. It doesn't excuse anything.""

Margaret scrolled farther.

The final message had been sent Saturday morning.

*If she creates a scene, document everything. Do not allow Marcus to turn the situation into a personal intervention.*

Dad stared at it.

Then he noticed something else.

"Margaret, go back.""

She scrolled upward.

"Which message?""

"The one from Saturday morning.""

She enlarged it.

At the bottom was a copied recipient.

*BOARD SECRETARY — CONFIDENTIAL.*

Dad looked at her.

"Why was the board secretary copied?""

Margaret's face tightened.

"Because Adrian wanted the incident documented before the emergency resolution.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

Dad finally looked at me.

"Because he was trying to create a public-relations problem.""

I understood.

He had wanted to make me look entitled.

A wealthy man's daughter using her father's influence to intimidate mall employees.

If I had called security, shouted, or demanded special treatment, he could have used the footage to claim my father was abusing his position.

Instead, Victoria had assaulted me.

And the video had captured everything.

But Adrian had underestimated one thing.

The cameras had also recorded the truth.

At 4:05 p.m., we entered the headquarters through a side entrance.

Two security officers were waiting.

One recognized my father immediately.

"Mr. Carter.""

Dad nodded.

"Good afternoon.""

The officer looked uncomfortable.

"Sir, we've been instructed to escort you to the visitor conference room.""

Dad stopped.

"Who issued that instruction?""

"Mr. Vale's office.""

Dad looked at Robert.

Robert stepped forward.

"We'll need the written directive.""

The officer nodded.

"Of course.""

Nobody raised their voice.

Nobody threatened anyone.

But the atmosphere was tense enough to make my palms sweat.

We were eventually escorted to a conference room on the thirty-second floor.

Through the glass walls, I could see executives moving between offices.

Some avoided looking at my father.

Others stared.

A few whispered.

Then the door opened.

Adrian Vale walked in.

He was a tall white man in his early sixties, with silver hair, a navy suit, and a perfectly folded pocket square.

He looked exactly as I remembered him.

At my father's birthday dinner two years earlier, he had brought a bottle of expensive champagne and spent twenty minutes telling me how proud he was of my new career.

He had even held Elijah's baby shower gift.

Now he smiled at me.

"Naomi. Congratulations on the baby.""

I felt disgust rise in my throat.

"Don't.""

His smile faded.

"Excuse me?""

"Don't pretend you care about my son.""

Adrian glanced at Dad.

"Marcus, perhaps we should discuss this without emotions.""

Dad gestured toward the chair.

"Sit down.""

Adrian remained standing.

"I think we need to establish the new chain of command.""

Dad's voice stayed level.

"You forged my signature.""

Adrian laughed softly.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"We have the documents.""

"Then let legal review them.""

"We are.""

Adrian looked at me.

"And I understand there was an unfortunate incident at Sterling Crown.""

I stared at him.

"Unfortunate?""

He spread his hands.

"I heard there was a misunderstanding.""

"Victoria slapped me while I was holding my newborn.""

He tilted his head.

"That's certainly not acceptable.""

"Then why did you send her my photograph?""

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

He looked toward Margaret.

"Who gave you that information?""

Dad leaned forward.

"Answer my daughter.""

Adrian sighed.

"Naomi, your father has spent years giving his family access to resources that ordinary people don't have. We wanted to understand whether you expected special treatment.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"So you arranged for a mall manager to confront me?""

"I didn't arrange an assault.""

"But you sent her my picture.""

"I sent a customer notification.""

"With instructions to handle me personally.""

Adrian glanced at Dad.

"Your daughter is clearly upset.""

Dad stood.

"Stop speaking about her as if she isn't in the room.""

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"Marcus, you're no longer the chief executive. The board has made its decision.""

Dad nodded.

"And what did you tell them about the incident?""

"That it was an operational matter.""

"Did you show them the video?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Dad continued.

"Did you tell them Victoria had assaulted a customer?""

"That's under investigation.""

"Did you tell them the customer was my daughter?""

Adrian gave a small shrug.

"Your family status is irrelevant.""

I almost laughed.

He had spent the entire week collecting information about my family status.

Now he was pretending it didn't matter.

Margaret opened her folder.

"Mr. Vale, we have the original email chain, the surveillance footage, the disruption report, and the documents bearing the disputed signature.""

Adrian looked at her.

"You shouldn't have access to those files.""

Margaret's expression hardened.

"I have worked here for eleven years. I know where the records are.""

Adrian stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you're involved in.""

Dad interrupted.

"That's enough.""

Then he placed a document on the table.

"Here's what happens next. An independent forensic audit will examine every relevant corporate record. The board will receive the original footage.

Our legal team will investigate the disputed authorization. And Victoria Hayes and Daniel Price will be removed from customer-facing duties pending a fair investigation.""

Adrian smiled.

"You don't have the authority to do that anymore.""

Dad looked at him.

"Then we'll let the courts decide.""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"You think the board will believe you?""

Dad said nothing.

Adrian leaned closer.

"Your daughter has no idea what you've done to keep this company running. She has no idea how many people have sacrificed to protect your reputation.""

I stood.

"Don't use me to threaten my father.""

Adrian looked at me.

"Sit down, Naomi.""

"No.""

He gave a cold smile.

"You're very much like your father.""

I held his gaze.

"And you're nothing like the man I thought you were.""

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Adrian turned toward the door.

"This meeting is over.""

He opened it.

But a woman stood outside.

She was in her late forties, wearing a dark green suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

Dad recognized her immediately.

"Elaine?""

Elaine Porter was the chairwoman of the Carter Meridian board.

She had been my father's closest professional ally for nearly fifteen years.

She walked into the room without looking at Adrian.

"Marcus, I need to speak with you.""

Adrian straightened.

"Elaine, we're in the middle of a confidential meeting.""

She placed her briefcase on the table.

"Not anymore.""

Dad frowned.

"What happened?""

Elaine opened the briefcase and removed a thick envelope.

"The board has received evidence that the emergency resolution may have been obtained through fraudulent disclosures.""

Adrian's face changed.

"What evidence?""

Elaine ignored him.

She looked at Dad.

"We also received a recording from someone inside the executive office.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Who sent it?""

Elaine hesitated.

"That's the problem.""

She pulled out a photograph.

It showed Adrian standing outside the boardroom with another person.

The image was grainy, but the second person's face was visible.

I recognized him immediately.

It was Robert Ellis.

The mall's chief security officer.

I looked toward Dad.

"Robert?""

Elaine nodded.

"He met Adrian privately last night.""

Dad stared at the photograph.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*FROM: ROBERT ELLIS*

*Mr. Carter, I need to tell you something before it's too late. The person who ordered the surveillance on Naomi wasn't Adrian. He was following instructions from someone else.*

Dad slowly looked up.

Another message arrived.

*And that person is someone in your family.*

I felt my heart stop.

Dad read the words again.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Naomi...""

He didn't finish.

Because a third message appeared.

This one contained a name.

*DANIELLE CARTER.*

My father's younger sister.

My aunt.

The woman who had held Elijah at the hospital, kissed his forehead, and promised she would always protect him.

May you like

The woman who had been standing beside us in the family photograph only two weeks earlier.

And suddenly, the betrayal inside the company seemed much more personal than anyone had imagined.
