Chapter 2: The Chairman's Daughter
Robert Carter didn't run.
That was the first thing Vanessa noticed.
He didn't shout. He didn't push through the crowd. He didn't make a dramatic announcement.
He simply walked toward his daughter with a controlled expression that somehow made the entire lobby feel smaller.
“Naomi,” he said again.
She struggled to get up while keeping Elijah secure against her chest.
“Don't move,” Robert told her gently.
He crouched beside her.
“Let me see the baby.””
Naomi carefully shifted Elijah so her father could look at him.
Robert's expression softened.
“Hello, little man.””
Elijah hiccupped between cries.
Robert touched the baby's tiny hand.
“Grandpa's here.””
Then he looked at Naomi's cheek.
A red mark was beginning to appear beneath her eye.
His jaw tightened.
“Who did this?””
Naomi glanced toward Vanessa.
The manager immediately stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter! Good afternoon. There seems to have been a misunderstanding.””
Robert didn't look at her.
He took off his suit jacket and placed it around Naomi's shoulders.
“Are you in pain?””
“My back hurts a little. I fell when she hit me.””
“Did anyone examine you?””
“No.””
“Did anyone check the baby?””
“No.””
Robert slowly stood.
Only then did he turn around.
“Who is responsible for patient services?””
Vanessa hurried forward.
“I am, sir. Vanessa Whitmore. I manage patient services and visitor relations.””
Robert studied her.
“You manage this lobby?””
“Yes, sir.””
“And you believe this is how people should be treated?””
Vanessa's smile became strained.
“Mr. Carter, I understand this looks unfortunate, but the woman refused to follow our security procedures.””
Naomi stared at her.
“That's not true.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“She became aggressive, refused to leave, and began making accusations.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Accusations?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Unfortunately, some visitors become emotional when they're denied access to restricted areas.””
Robert turned to his daughter.
“Naomi, tell me exactly what happened.””
She looked at the faces around them.
“I came to see you. I told her I was your daughter. I gave her your room number. She said I didn't belong here.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“She never provided proper authorization.””
Naomi continued.
“When I tried to show her your message, she slapped me. I fell because I was holding Elijah. I kept telling her I wasn't trying to cause trouble.””
Robert looked at the assistant.
“And you?””
Daniel straightened his tie.
“Sir, I was attempting to de-escalate the situation.””
Robert waited.
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“Mrs. Carter was asked to leave because she didn't have documented clearance.””
“Did you see the slap?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I saw a physical altercation.””
Naomi's eyebrows lifted.
“A physical altercation?””
Robert looked at her.
“Let him finish.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Vanessa was trying to maintain order.””
Robert turned back.
“Did you witness her strike my daughter?””
The assistant's eyes moved toward the manager again.
“Yes, sir.””
The lobby became silent.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, that's not what happened.””
Robert raised one hand.
“I'm asking him.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes, sir. I saw her slap Mrs. Carter.””
A woman near the elevators spoke up.
“I saw it too.””
Another visitor nodded.
“So did I.””
Vanessa's face turned red.
“This is ridiculous. I was protecting the hospital.””
Robert's voice remained low.
“From what?””
“She refused to cooperate.””
“She was holding a newborn.””
“She was disrupting the waiting area.””
Robert looked around.
At the expensive marble floor.
At the comfortable leather chairs.
At the reception desk with its polished brass lettering.
At the people who had watched his daughter fall.
“Is this what we teach our employees?”” he asked.
Nobody answered.
Robert turned to the security supervisor.
“Please arrange for a medical assessment for my daughter and grandson. Immediately.””
“Yes, Mr. Carter.””
“And preserve every available camera recording from this lobby.””
Vanessa stiffened.
“Sir, there's no need to involve the board.””
Robert looked directly at her.
“I haven't mentioned the board yet.””
That silenced her.
Two nurses hurried over with a wheelchair and a portable infant assessment kit.
One of them, a young Black nurse named Patricia Lewis, knelt beside Naomi.
“I'm sorry this happened,” Patricia said softly.
“Let's make sure you and your little one are okay.””
Naomi nodded.
“Thank you.””
Patricia examined the baby's breathing and checked his temperature while another nurse helped Naomi into the wheelchair.
Robert walked beside them.
Before they reached the elevators, Vanessa called after him.
“Mr. Carter, could I speak with you privately?””
Robert stopped.
“About what?””
“About protecting the institution's reputation.””
He stared at her.
“My daughter was struck in your lobby, and your first concern is the institution's reputation?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Robert stepped closer.
“Let me make something clear. This hospital was built to care for people. Not to make people prove they're wealthy enough to deserve kindness.””
Vanessa folded her arms defensively.
“Sir, I have worked here for eleven years. I know how this institution operates.””
“Then you should know its values.””
“I have always upheld those values.””
Robert looked at the red mark on Naomi's face.
“Apparently not today.””
He turned toward the elevator.
As the doors began to close, Naomi looked back.
Vanessa was whispering furiously to Daniel.
The assistant kept shaking his head.
For the first time, Naomi wondered whether her father's arrival had frightened them for a reason beyond their jobs.
Inside the elevator, Robert held his daughter's hand.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
Naomi looked at him.
“You didn't do anything.””
“I should have made sure someone was expecting you.””
“Dad, I don't want special treatment.””
Robert shook his head.
“You didn't ask for special treatment. You asked to see your father.””
He looked down at Elijah.
“And that little boy deserved to meet his grandfather without his mother being humiliated.””
Naomi's eyes filled again.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she remembered something.
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
“Why did everyone recognize you?””
Robert gave her a tired smile.
“Because I've spent a long time working here.””
“That isn't what I mean.””
He looked at the elevator display.
“I know.””
The doors opened on the private recovery floor.
A nurse guided Naomi toward an examination room.
Robert stayed behind for a moment to speak with the hospital's chief operating officer, Marcus Hill.
“Marcus,” he said quietly, “I want the original footage preserved. Not an edited copy. Every camera covering the lobby, reception desk, and elevators.””
Marcus nodded.
“Understood.””
“And I want the visitor records from this morning.””
“Of course.””
Robert paused.
“There's something else. Find out who authorized Vanessa Whitmore to change the visitor-access procedures last month.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“Why does that matter?””
“Because my daughter wasn't the first person she treated like an intruder.””
Robert walked into the examination room.
Naomi was sitting on the bed while Patricia checked Elijah's oxygen level.
Her phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Mrs. Carter, please don't discuss what happened with anyone until we've had an opportunity to resolve this privately.
Naomi stared at the screen.
She showed her father.
Robert read it twice.
Then he looked toward Marcus.
“Who sent this?””
Marcus examined the number.
“I don't recognize it.””
Robert handed the phone back.
“Find out.””
Naomi looked at her father.
“Dad, I just want to go home.””
Robert sat beside her.
“I know.””
“Please don't let this become some huge fight.””
He gently squeezed her hand.
“Sweetheart, you didn't start this fight.””
Then his phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name that made his expression harden.
*Eleanor Price — Chief Medical Officer.*
Robert answered.
“Eleanor.””
Her voice was urgent.
“Robert, before you do anything, there's something you need to know about Vanessa Whitmore.””
“What?””
“She wasn't supposed to be working in the lobby today.””
Robert looked toward the door.
“Then where was she supposed to be?””
May you like
Eleanor took a breath.
“She was specifically instructed to stay away from your daughter's case.””
