Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Pink Blazer
Robert Carter had spent thirty-four years in healthcare administration.
He had negotiated hospital mergers, managed financial crises, and sat through more emergency board meetings than he could remember.
He had learned one important lesson.
When someone asked him not to investigate something, he investigated it twice.
“Eleanor,” he said, “explain what you mean.””
On the other end of the phone, the chief medical officer sounded uncomfortable.
“Naomi's visit was entered into our system yesterday afternoon.””
Robert looked at his daughter.
“What?””
“Her name was on the approved family-visitor list. Your office submitted the authorization.””
Robert's fingers tightened around his phone.
“Then why was she denied entry?””
“That's what I'm trying to establish.””
“You said Vanessa wasn't supposed to be working there.””
Eleanor paused.
“She was assigned to a different department this morning.””
“Which department?””
“Administrative compliance.””
Robert stood.
“Why?””
“Because we received several complaints about her conduct.””
Naomi heard the conversation.
She looked up from the bed.
“Dad?””
He raised one finger, asking her to give him a moment.
“Eleanor, how many complaints?””
“Seven formal complaints in six weeks. Three involved visitors being publicly humiliated. Two involved staff members being threatened with disciplinary action. One involved a patient who claimed Vanessa had physically grabbed his wheelchair.””
Robert closed his eyes briefly.
“And the seventh?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“A woman who said Vanessa refused to let her visit her husband because she looked homeless.””
Robert stared at the wall.
“Was that complaint investigated?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“It was marked resolved.””
“By whom?””
Eleanor didn't answer immediately.
Robert already knew.
“Vanessa?””
“No. Daniel Brooks.””
Robert looked toward the window.
“Send me the full records. Every complaint. Every response. Every person who approved the resolutions.””
“I'll prepare them.””
“Don't prepare a summary. I want the original documents.””
“Understood.””
He ended the call.
Naomi had been listening.
“Dad, are you saying she has done this before?””
Robert sat beside her.
“It appears that way.””
Naomi looked down at Elijah.
“That's awful.””
“It is.””
“I don't understand why someone would treat people like that.””
Robert brushed a loose curl away from her forehead.
“Sometimes people become so comfortable with authority that they forget what it's for.””
A nurse entered with a clipboard.
“Mrs. Carter, your examination results look reassuring. We want to monitor your back for a little while, but the baby appears stable.””
Naomi exhaled.
“Thank you.””
The nurse smiled.
“Your father has been asking about you every five minutes.””
Robert gave her a look.
“That's an exaggeration.””
“Four minutes,” Naomi corrected.
For the first time that afternoon, they both laughed.
But the relief didn't last.
At 2:15 p.m., Robert received another call.
This time it was Marcus Hill.
“Sir, we have the lobby footage.””
“Good.””
“There's a problem.””
Robert stood again.
“What problem?””
“The camera recording shows the entire incident, but someone attempted to delete the reception desk audio.””
Robert's expression went cold.
“Attempted?””
“We recovered part of it. Our technical team is checking the backup server.””
“Who accessed the system?””
“An administrative account.””
“Whose?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Daniel Brooks.””
Robert glanced at Naomi.
She was feeding Elijah from a bottle while Patricia adjusted the blanket around him.
“Don't confront him yet,” Robert said.
“Preserve the access logs.””
“Understood.””
“And Marcus?””
“Yes, sir?””
“Don't tell Vanessa what we have.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to know what she does when she thinks nobody can prove anything.””
Robert ended the call.
At the same time, across the building, Vanessa Whitmore was standing inside her private office.
Her pink blazer hung over the back of her chair.
Daniel stood in front of her desk.
“You told me you had authorization,” he said.
Vanessa opened a drawer and removed a folder.
“I did.””
“Then why was her name on the visitor list?””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're asking me questions you already know the answers to.””
Daniel looked toward the glass wall.
“Robert Carter is going to investigate this.””
“Let him.””
“He asked me directly whether I saw you hit her.””
“And what did you say?””
“I told him the truth.””
Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair rolled backward.
“You idiot.””
Daniel's face tightened.
“I wasn't going to lie to the chairman.””
“You could have said you didn't see clearly.””
“He was standing ten feet away.””
Vanessa walked to the window.
Outside, an ambulance pulled into the emergency entrance.
She lowered her voice.
“Do you understand what happens if the board reviews those complaints?””
Daniel nodded.
“We could both lose our jobs.””
“Not just our jobs.””
He looked at her.
Vanessa opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails, visitor-access reports, and a document bearing the signature of the hospital's former executive director.
Daniel frowned.
“What is that?””
“Insurance.””
“For what?””
“For the day someone decides to make me the villain.””
She placed the document on the desk.
Daniel read the first page.
His expression changed.
“Vanessa…”
“Keep your voice down.””
“This is a visitor restriction order.””
“Correct.””
“For Naomi Carter?””
Vanessa nodded.
Daniel stared at the signature.
“Why would you have this?””
Vanessa closed the folder.
“Because I was instructed to keep certain people away from the private recovery wing.””
“But Naomi is the chairman's daughter.””
Vanessa smiled without humor.
“That's what makes this interesting.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You knew who she was?””
“I knew her name. I didn't know she'd come today.””
“Then why did you hit her?””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Because she embarrassed me in front of the staff.””
Daniel stared.
“You're serious?””
“Do you think people respect a manager who lets visitors argue with her?””
“She was holding a baby.””
“And?””
Daniel looked away.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Listen to me. If the chairman starts asking questions, we give him the same explanation. She refused to follow instructions.
She became aggressive. We were protecting the facility.””
“And the slap?””
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“You never saw a slap.””
Daniel didn't respond.
She pointed toward the door.
“Go downstairs. Find out whether the footage has been released.””
Daniel left.
Vanessa waited until the door clicked shut.
Then she picked up her phone and called someone.
The call connected immediately.
“It's me,” she whispered.
A man's voice answered.
“What's happened?””
“Robert Carter is investigating.””
There was a long silence.
Then the man said, “Did he see the visitor restriction order?””
“No.””
“Good. Keep it that way.””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“I need you to understand something. If this gets to the board, everything could come out.””
The man's voice became colder.
“Then it doesn't get to the board.””
“Robert is the chairman.””
“I know exactly who he is.””
“He won't stop.””
“Neither will I.””
Vanessa looked at the closed folder.
“What do you want me to do?””
“Get the original authorization document.””
“I don't have it.””
“Find it.””
The call ended.
Meanwhile, in the recovery room, Robert was reviewing the visitor-access report on his tablet.
Something caught his attention.
He enlarged the document.
Naomi's name appeared at the top.
*VISITOR: NAOMI CARTER*
*PATIENT: ROBERT CARTER*
*RELATIONSHIP: DAUGHTER*
*ACCESS STATUS: APPROVED*
Below it was a note added at 8:42 a.m.
*SPECIAL INSTRUCTION: DO NOT ALLOW VISITOR TO ENTER PRIVATE RECOVERY WING. REFER TO PATIENT SERVICES MANAGEMENT.*
Robert read it again.
The instruction had been added after his personal office approved the visit.
He scrolled down.
At the bottom was the name of the person who had entered it.
*AUTHORIZED BY: ELEANOR PRICE.*
Robert went completely still.
Eleanor had just told him that Naomi's visit was approved.
But the system showed that she had also ordered Naomi to be denied access.
He called her immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
“Robert?””
“Why did you restrict Naomi's access?””
Silence.
Then Eleanor said, “I didn't.””
“Your name is on the instruction.””
“That isn't possible.””
“I'm looking at it.””
“Robert, listen to me. I need to explain something.””
“Then explain.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“Someone used my credentials.””
Robert stood beside the window.
“Who?””
Eleanor's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Vanessa Whitmore.””
He looked at Naomi, who was holding Elijah close and smiling at something the baby had done.
Then he looked back at the document.
“Why would Vanessa use your credentials?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Because she was trying to keep your daughter away from someone.””
“Who?””
The answer came slowly.
“Not someone, Robert.””
A pause.
“Your daughter was being kept away from the person who ordered her visitor restriction.””
Robert's stomach tightened.
“Who ordered it?””
Eleanor whispered a name.
May you like
And when Robert heard it, he finally understood that the slap in the lobby might have been only the beginning.
Because the person behind the order was someone he had trusted for more than twenty years.
