Chapter 8: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Daniel Brooks agreed to meet them at a public library in Marietta that afternoon.

He refused to discuss the original agreement over the phone.

“I've kept it safe for twelve years,” he told Marcus.

“I'm not going to risk it because somebody else has suddenly become interested in the past.””

Marcus understood the caution. After the discovery of the payment and the letter from Vanessa's mother, he no longer trusted anyone who claimed to be acting on behalf of the family without evidence.

He arranged for Jordan to stay with Denise while he and Vanessa went to the meeting.

Before leaving, Marcus crouched in front of the boy.

“We'll be back before dinner.””

Jordan nodded.

“Are you going to find out why Toulouse wants me?””

“We're going to find out what happened. That's different.””

“Will you tell me the truth?””

Marcus held his gaze.

“Yes. In a way you can understand.””

Jordan hugged him tightly.

“Okay, Dad.””

Marcus closed his eyes for a second, then stood and followed Vanessa to the car.

The library was quiet when they arrived. A few students occupied tables near the windows, and an older man sat reading a newspaper beside the entrance.

Daniel Brooks was waiting near the back of the building.

He was in his sixties, with gray hair, a weathered face, and a brown leather briefcase resting beside his chair. When Marcus approached, Daniel stood and extended his hand.

“Mr. Reed.””

Marcus shook it.

“Daniel.””

Daniel nodded toward Vanessa.

“Ms. Bennett. You look like your mother.””

Vanessa's expression tightened.

“You knew her?””

“Not well. She hired me to verify some information after she discovered Toulouse had contacted Raymond again.””

“When was that?”” Marcus asked.

“About twelve years ago.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

Daniel placed his briefcase on the table.

“Your mother believed that telling you everything would only cause more pain. She wanted to protect your marriage and your son.””

Marcus exchanged a look with Vanessa.

The phrase sounded painfully familiar.

“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting us,” he said.

“Meanwhile, we're the last people to know anything.””

Daniel accepted the criticism without protest.

“That's fair.””

He opened the briefcase and removed a thick envelope.

Inside was a copy of a signed agreement, accompanied by several pages of financial records.

“Raymond Cole contacted me after Toulouse approached him with a proposal,” Daniel explained.

“Toulouse claimed he wanted to establish a relationship with Jordan, but he also asked whether Raymond would support a plan to relocate the boy and oversee his educational opportunities.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He told me he wanted to reconnect because he'd regretted leaving.””

“Perhaps he did regret it,” Daniel replied.

“But regret wasn't the only thing motivating him.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did Raymond agree to?””

Daniel placed the agreement on the table.

“Twelve years ago, Raymond offered financial support for Jordan's future. Toulouse was not involved in that offer initially. He contacted Raymond later, claiming that he could help arrange a reunion between the biological father and the child.””

“Arrange a reunion?”” Marcus repeated.

“Yes. Toulouse said he had information about Vanessa's circumstances and could help Raymond approach the family.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“He was using me.””

“He was using what he knew about you,” Daniel said carefully.

“I can't tell you what he felt personally. I can tell you what the records show.””

He pointed to a paragraph in the agreement.

Toulouse had accepted a payment in exchange for withdrawing his request to become involved in the administration of Jordan's educational funds and agreeing not to represent himself as Raymond's authorized intermediary.

Marcus read the paragraph twice.

“So Raymond paid him to stay away?””

“Not exactly. The payment was intended to settle a dispute over Toulouse's claims that he could control how Jordan's educational opportunities were arranged. Raymond wanted the matter resolved without involving the child.””

Vanessa looked sick.

“Then why is Toulouse back?””

Daniel turned another page.

“Because the agreement had a time limit on certain financial restrictions. It did not permanently prevent Toulouse from seeking a relationship with his biological son.””

Marcus frowned.

“So the agreement doesn't mean Toulouse has no right to know Jordan.””

“Correct. It means he cannot claim Raymond authorized him to control the educational fund, and he cannot use the old payment as proof that Raymond appointed him to represent the family.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“That's why he keeps saying the arrangement is about baseball.””

“Possibly. He may be trying to build a legitimate relationship. But the recent documents suggest he is also trying to secure influence over Jordan's educational arrangements.””

Marcus pointed to the signature page.

“Who signed this?””

“Raymond and Toulouse. I witnessed the signatures.””

“And Walter knew?””

“Yes. Walter asked me to review the agreement because he was concerned about the pressure being placed on Vanessa.””

Daniel opened another section of the file.

“He also wanted to ensure that Jordan's trust could not be redirected simply because a biological parent appeared years later.””

Marcus thought of the notebook at Denise's house.

Jordan's future must be protected from anyone who mistakes inheritance for entitlement.

Walter had understood the danger before Marcus even knew the family had money.

“Why didn't Walter tell me?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel considered the question.

“Perhaps he didn't want to involve you in a conflict he hoped to resolve quietly. Perhaps he believed the agreement would end the problem. I can't say.””

Vanessa stared at the paperwork.

“My mother knew too.””

“Yes.””

“And she wrote to Toulouse.””

“She did.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I spent years thinking my mother was simply overprotective. She never told me any of this.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“She was trying to give you a chance at an ordinary life.””

Marcus looked at him.

“By keeping secrets?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Sometimes people confuse silence with peace.””

The words settled over the table.

For eight years, Marcus had believed his marriage was built on shared trust. Now he could see how many of its foundations had been laid over secrets that everyone considered too painful to discuss.

He turned back to the agreement.

“Can this help protect Jordan?””

“It can help establish what Toulouse was and wasn't authorized to do. But the agreement does not determine custody, and it does not erase Toulouse's biological relationship with Jordan.””

“Then what do we do?””

“Get independent legal advice about the family arrangements. Preserve the evidence. Make sure the educational funds are administered by the proper trustees. And don't let anyone pressure Jordan into believing his future depends on living with a particular adult.””

Marcus nodded.

That was the first useful advice he had heard all week.

Vanessa studied the payment records.

“Twenty thousand dollars,” she whispered.

“He accepted twenty thousand dollars and stayed away.””

Daniel corrected her gently.

“He agreed to the terms of a settlement. We don't know what he felt about it at the time.””

“But now he wants to come back.””

“Yes.””

“And he's telling my son that living with him could lead to money and opportunities.””

Daniel folded his hands.

“That is why I contacted you.””

Marcus looked at the agreement again.

“Why now?””

“Because three weeks ago, Toulouse called me. He asked whether I still had the original document.””

Marcus went still.

“What did you tell him?””

“That I did.””

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked toward the library windows.

“He asked me whether the agreement could be challenged if Raymond changed his estate plans. I told him I wasn't his attorney and wouldn't advise him on that question.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He's been planning this for weeks.””

“Possibly longer.””

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

“Did he threaten you?””

“Not directly. But he made it clear he wanted the document destroyed.””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a second envelope.

“This is a copy of a message he sent me afterward.””

Marcus read it.

The message was short.

Some things are better left buried. You don't want to hurt a child by reopening old disputes.

Marcus set the paper down.

“He keeps using Jordan as an excuse.””

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And that is precisely why I wanted you to see the evidence before Saturday.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Why Saturday?””

Daniel looked at her with concern.

“Because Raymond's family event is scheduled for that day, and Toulouse has been telling people that he will bring Jordan as his son.””

“He can't just take him,” Marcus said.

“No. But I believe Toulouse intends to present the situation as though the family has already agreed to his proposal.””

Vanessa reached for her phone.

“I'm calling him.””

Marcus caught her wrist gently.

“Wait.””

She looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because we need to know what he's planning, not give him a chance to change his story.””

Daniel nodded.

“I agree. Keep all communication in writing. Don't make threats, and don't promise anything. If Toulouse contacts you, ask him to explain his proposal clearly.””

Marcus looked at the agreement one last time.

“Can we keep a copy?””

“Of course. I'll also provide a certified copy for your attorney.””

Daniel placed the documents in a folder and handed it to Marcus.

Before they left, he added one final detail.

“There is something else about Raymond you should understand.””

Vanessa stopped near the door.

“What?””

“Raymond did not simply establish the educational fund because he felt guilty. He recently changed his estate plan after receiving information that made him question whether Jordan's interests were being protected.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What information?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A report about Toulouse's financial circumstances. He has substantial debts, and at least one business venture has been under pressure.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“So he needs money.””

“Possibly. I can't tell you that was his motivation. But it is relevant.””

Marcus remembered Toulouse's polished shoes, the leather folder, the way he had looked around their living room as if measuring what could be gained.

“What happens if Raymond finds out what he's doing?””

“That's a conversation Raymond needs to have with his own advisers. My concern is that Jordan is being pulled into a dispute he doesn't understand.””

Marcus nodded.

“That won't happen again.””

When they returned to the car, Vanessa sat silently for several minutes.

Finally, she said, “I owe you more than an apology.””

Marcus started the engine.

“Yes.””

“I should have told you about Raymond years ago. I should have told you about the trust. I should never have let Toulouse make plans without discussing them with you.””

Marcus looked through the windshield.

“I can't change what happened. But I need you to understand that I won't keep pretending things are fine just to make our marriage easier.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

He turned toward her.

“And whatever happens between us, Jordan doesn't become a bargaining chip.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I agree.””

For the first time in days, Marcus felt they were speaking about the same problem.

Not his pride.

Not Toulouse's biology.

Not the money.

Their son.

When they reached Denise's house, Jordan was waiting on the front porch with his baseball glove. He hurried down the steps when he saw them.

“Did you find out?””

Marcus crouched in front of him.

“We found some answers.””

“Is Toulouse allowed to take me?””

“No one is taking you anywhere without the adults responsible for you addressing the situation properly. And you won't be asked to make decisions about money or prove your love for anybody.””

Jordan studied his face.

“Can I still meet Grandpa Raymond?””

“If the meeting can be arranged safely and honestly, that's something we can discuss.””

Jordan nodded.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Mom?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can I stay home on Saturday?””

Vanessa immediately took his hand.

“Of course.””

Jordan's shoulders relaxed.

Marcus stood and followed them inside.

For a few minutes, the three of them sat together at Denise's dining table, talking about school and baseball and whether Jordan should try playing shortstop instead of second base.

It felt almost normal.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

Raymond Cole's name appeared on the screen, displayed beneath the number Daniel had provided.

Marcus answered.

“Hello?””

A deep, older voice replied.

“Mr. Reed? This is Raymond Cole. I understand you've been speaking with Daniel Brooks.””

“Yes.””

“I'd like to apologize for the confusion surrounding Saturday's event.””

Marcus glanced at Vanessa.

“What confusion?””

Raymond sighed.

“Toulouse has apparently represented himself as my authorized family liaison. He isn't. I never gave him that authority.””

Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.

“Then why did you invite Jordan?””

“Because I wanted to meet my grandson. Not to take him away from his home, and certainly not to make him choose between the adults who love him.””

Marcus felt some of the tension leave his shoulders.

“Thank you for clarifying that.””

“There is something else you should know.””

Marcus waited.

Raymond's voice grew quieter.

“I have reviewed the documents Toulouse submitted regarding Jordan's proposed living arrangements. One of them carries Vanessa's signature.””

Vanessa went pale.

“We found that letter,” Marcus said.

“She says she never signed it.””

“Then we need to determine how it was created.””

Raymond paused.

“Mr. Reed, I want to meet you and Vanessa before Saturday. There is a document I believe you both need to see.””

“What document?””

“The original letter my daughter sent me years ago, refusing my offer to become involved in Jordan's life.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Raymond continued.

“She wrote that she wanted Jordan to grow up with the father who had raised him. She also wrote that if I ever came into his life, I must never use money to compete for his affection.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

Raymond's voice softened.

“I respected her wishes. But someone has recently sent me a different letter, supposedly written by Vanessa, asking me to support Toulouse's plan to relocate Jordan.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Who sent it?””

“I don't know yet.””

Raymond paused.

“But the signature on the new letter looks identical to the signature on an older document that Vanessa insists she never signed.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

A forgery.

Someone had created a letter in Vanessa's name, and that letter might be the reason Toulouse believed he could convince Raymond to support his plan.

Then Raymond added something that made Marcus's grip tighten.

“The letter was delivered to my office by someone who claimed to be acting for your family. That person signed the visitor log.””

“Who?””

Raymond gave him the name.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

May you like

Because the name Raymond had just spoken belonged to the one person they had trusted to keep the family together.

Denise.
