Chapter 4 - The Name on the LedgerWe called the police.

Not because Vanessa suddenly trusted them.
Because after seeing that note, there was no pretending this was a private family problem.
Two officers arrived twenty minutes later.
Nora hid behind me.
Vanessa sat rigidly on the couch.
Detective Harris placed the note in an evidence bag.
“Did anyone else have access to this house?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not recently.”
I said, “Someone knew where she was.”
Harris looked at me.
“How long has the child been here?”
“Three weeks.”
His expression changed.
“Here?”
“Inside the wall.”
He glanced toward Vanessa.
She looked ashamed.
Harris stood.
“Show me.”
We removed the panel again.
The passage was narrower than I remembered.
Behind the first section was an old service corridor, probably left from the house's original construction.
At the far end sat a wooden box.
Vanessa pointed.
“That.”
Harris pulled it out.
Inside were notebooks.
Receipts.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Addresses.
The top page had twenty-seven names.
Some were scratched out.
Some had amounts beside them.
Harris read silently.
Then he looked up.
“Where did you get these?”
Vanessa said, “From Marcus.”
“What is your relationship with Marcus Hale?”
“My former partner.”
Harris looked toward me.
“Does he know where you live?”
“Yes.”
“Does he know your wife is here?”
“I think so.”
Harris closed the notebook.
“What does he do?”
Vanessa whispered, “He finds children whose parents can't protect them.”
Harris's expression hardened.
“You're saying he abducts them?”
“I don't know what the legal term is.”
“I'm not asking for the legal term.”
He pointed to the ledger.
“I'm asking what these names mean.”
Vanessa stared at the page.
“Some of them were paid.”
“For what?”
“For taking them somewhere.”
Nora began crying.
I knelt beside her.
“You don't have to listen.”
She grabbed my sleeve.
“Daddy will know.”
“Know what?”
“He knows the man with the red truck.”
Harris looked up.
“Who is the man with the red truck?”
Nora hesitated.
“He came to the apartment.”
“When?”
“Before Mommy found me.”
“What did he look like?”
“Big.”
“Anything else?”
“He had a snake tattoo.”
Harris wrote it down.
Then Nora pointed toward the ledger.
“He's there.”
I turned the notebook around.
Nora placed one finger on a name.
Graham Vale.
I had never heard it before.
Harris's face changed.
“You're sure?”
Nora nodded.
“He brought food.”
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered, “Graham is Marcus's brother.”
The detective's pen stopped.
“You said Marcus's brother worked at the hospital.”
“He did.”
Harris looked at the photograph from the hospital file.
Then at the ledger.
Then at me.
“Mr. Carter, your wife may not have told you everything.”
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?”
Harris tapped the ledger.
“There are payments dated six months before Nora was born.”
Vanessa looked confused.
“What?”
He turned the book toward her.
“Look.”
She did.
The entries were handwritten.
One name appeared over and over.
V. Carter.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
I stared.
“Why is your name in there?”
She shook her head.
“That wasn't my name then.”
Harris looked at me.
“Exactly.”
He flipped back several pages.
The same initials appeared.
Then a second name beside them.
Ryan Carter.
My mouth went dry.
“No.”
Vanessa stared at me.
“I don't understand.”
Harris's expression was careful.
“Neither do I.”
He pointed at the page.
“This entry is dated eleven months before you say you met your wife.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa stood.
“Ryan, I had never heard of you then.”
Harris closed the ledger.
“Then someone was using both your names long before you knew each other.”
I heard a sound from the hallway.
Three soft knocks.
Not on the front door.
From inside the wall.
Nora screamed.
Harris drew his weapon.
I froze.
Another knock.
Then a man's voice came through the plaster.
“Vanessa.”
She stumbled backward.
May you like
The voice came again.
“You've kept my daughter long enough.”
