Chapter 6: The Secret He Trusted Her With
Nobody spoke after the call ended.
The silence inside Daniel’s office felt heavier than before.
Evelyn looked at Celia.
Celia looked back.
Neither woman moved.
Because they both understood the same thing.
Grant had just changed the game.
He wanted them suspicious of each other.
And the worst part was that it was working.
“Celia,” Evelyn said.
The woman across from her stiffened.
“Yes?””
“What secret?””
Celia’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I don’t know what he told you.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Celia looked down.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Whatever it is, now is the time to explain.””
Celia stayed silent.
Evelyn watched her carefully.
Six years ago, she had built an entire opinion of this woman from a distance.
Young.
Beautiful.
Ambitious.
Dangerous.
But sitting across from her now, Evelyn saw something different.
Someone exhausted.
Someone who had been carrying a burden too heavy for too long.
Finally, Celia spoke.
“Grant didn’t trust me.””
Evelyn frowned.
“He told you he did.””
“Yes.””
“Then why say he didn’t?””
“Because Grant doesn’t trust anyone.””
Celia looked at the flash drive.
“He only trusts things he can control.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“So what did he control about you?””
Celia’s eyes moved toward the window.
“My debt.””
Evelyn blinked.
“Your debt?””
Celia nodded.
“When I met Grant, I was already struggling.””
“With what?””
“My father had left behind a failed business. Investors sued. Loans came after him. When he died, the problems became mine.””
Her voice became quieter.
“I was thirty years old and drowning.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Grant offered to help.””
Daniel immediately asked:
“In exchange for what?””
Celia smiled sadly.
“Exactly.””
The answer hung in the room.
“He didn’t ask for money.””
“Then what?””
“He asked for loyalty.””
Evelyn felt a coldness spread through her.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning he paid off my debts. Bought my silence. Then reminded me every time I tried to leave that he could destroy me.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“How?””
“Documents.””
Celia looked at Evelyn.
“Contracts I didn’t understand. Agreements I signed when I was desperate.””
Evelyn remembered the papers on her own desk.
The signatures.
The trust.
The assumption that someone she loved would never use paperwork as a weapon.
“What did he want you to do?””
Celia hesitated.
“Become part of his plan.””
“What plan?””
“To make you believe he had replaced you.””
Evelyn looked away.
Even knowing the truth, hearing it still hurt.
Celia continued.
“He wanted you angry. Hurt. Distracted.””
“Why?””
“Because while you were focused on me, he was moving assets.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Classic diversion.””
Celia looked at him.
“It was more than that.””
“What do you mean?””
She reached into her bag and removed another envelope.
Evelyn stared.
“You had more?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you show us before?””
“Because I didn’t know if you would believe me.””
She placed it on the desk.
“This is the reason Grant kept me close.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a single document.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then he looked up.
“Evelyn.””
She knew that tone.
“What?””
Daniel handed it to her.
She read the heading.
*Beneficial Ownership Transfer Agreement.*
Her eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
Because the document was not about company assets.
It was about ownership of a private trust.
A trust she had never heard of.
A trust containing millions of dollars.
“What is this?””
Celia answered.
“The money Grant moved.””
Evelyn looked up.
“Then why is my name on it?””
Celia’s face tightened.
“Because the money wasn’t his.””
The room went still.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the dates.
“Evelyn, when was this created?””
Celia answered.
“Seven years ago.””
Evelyn frowned.
Seven years.
Before the betrayal.
Before the divorce plan.
Before everything.
“What happened seven years ago?””
She tried to remember.
Then she did.
Her company had nearly collapsed.
A major client had walked away.
Investors panicked.
She had taken personal risks to save everything.
Grant had told her he would handle the financial side.
She had trusted him.
“He told me he was protecting the company.””
Celia nodded.
“He was.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“He protected it.””
A pause.
“Then he protected himself.””
Daniel studied the document.
“This trust wasn’t created to steal from you.””
“No?””
“No.””
He pointed at a section.
“It was created to protect ownership.””
Evelyn frowned.
“From whom?””
Daniel looked at her.
“From Grant.””
The answer felt impossible.
Celia whispered:
“Grant knew if anything happened between you two, he couldn’t legally take control of the company.””
“Because of this trust?””
“Yes.””
“Then why create a divorce plan?””
“Because he couldn’t take what belonged to you.””
Celia’s eyes darkened.
“So he decided to make sure you couldn’t keep it.””
Evelyn sat back.
The pieces began connecting.
The yacht.
The affair.
The accusations.
The medical records.
The narrative.
He wasn’t leaving.
He was fighting.
And he was fighting dirty.
“He wanted everyone to think I was incapable.””
“Yes,” Celia said.
“And then?””
Celia looked at her.
“Then he would become the person managing your affairs.””
Daniel finished the thought.
“Which means he would control everything while pretending to protect you.””
Evelyn felt sick.
A man who claimed to love her had built a cage and decorated it like a home.
Her phone buzzed.
A message.
From Marcus.
She opened it.
*Don’t trust Celia completely.*
Her heart sank.
A second message arrived.
*She still hasn’t told you what happened the night your father died.*
Evelyn froze.
Daniel noticed.
“What is it?””
She handed him the phone.
Celia saw the message.
And all color disappeared from her face.
“What?””
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“What happened the night my father died?””
Celia didn’t answer.
“Celia.””
“I…”
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t know you knew about that.””
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Evelyn stood.
“My father died seven years ago.””
Celia closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“Why?””
A tear appeared in Celia’s eye.
“Because I was there.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn stared.
“What?””
“I was there that night.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Celia looked devastated.
“Because Grant sent me.””
Evelyn felt the world tilt.
Daniel immediately stood.
“Sent you to do what?””
Celia looked at Evelyn.
And for the first time since they met, she looked truly broken.
“I was supposed to convince your father to sign something.””
Evelyn’s voice became a whisper.
“What something?””
Celia couldn’t answer.
“Celia.””
Finally, she said:
“The transfer that created the trust.””
Evelyn stepped back.
“You were involved?””
“I was.””
“Then why are you helping me?””
Celia wiped her eyes.
“Because I failed.””
The words confused Evelyn.
“Failed at what?””
Celia looked at her.
“At saving him.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“My father?””
Celia nodded.
Evelyn’s voice shook.
“What happened?””
Celia looked down.
“I arrived too late.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
She swallowed.
“It isn’t.””
Then she reached into her bag one more time.
This time, she pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on the desk.
Evelyn looked down.
And her entire body went cold.
It was a picture of her father.
Taken on the night he died.
Standing beside him was Grant.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
The worst part was the person holding the camera.
Because in the reflection of the window behind them…
Evelyn saw herself.
Seven years younger.
Walking into the room.
A moment she had never remembered.
A moment someone had erased.
Celia whispered:
“Evelyn…”
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“You weren’t supposed to survive that night.””
