Chapter 5: My Brother's Confession

Imani locked the front door before answering.

“Where are you, Marcus?””

“At home.””

“Are you alone?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Did you take the letter from my safe?””

“What?””

“The letter Mama left me. The one with her handwriting. Someone entered my house and stole it.””

“I didn't take anything.””

“Then why did someone send me a photograph of it and tell me to ask you what you did?””

Marcus said nothing.

That silence frightened her more than a denial would have.

“Marcus?””

“I didn't take the letter,” he repeated.

“But I know what they're talking about.””

Imani closed her eyes.

“Come here.””

“Imani—”

“Come here, Marcus. And don't bring anyone with you.””

He arrived twenty-five minutes later.

Imani watched his car pull into the driveway through the security monitor. He sat behind the wheel for nearly a minute before getting out.

When she opened the door, he looked older than he had that morning.

His eyes were red.

His shoulders were hunched.

He carried no coffee, no breakfast, no comforting excuse.

“Can I come in?”” he asked.

She stepped aside.

They sat at the dining table.

Between them lay the house deed and a printed copy of the threatening message.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“Whoever sent this knows more than I thought.””

Imani folded her arms.

“Start talking.””

He rubbed his palms against his jeans.

“Three years ago, before you met Darius, I was in trouble.””

“What kind of trouble?””

“Business trouble. I had invested in a construction company with a friend. The company failed, and I owed money I couldn't pay back.””

“How much?””

“Eighty thousand dollars.””

Imani stared at him.

“You never told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

“So you let me believe you were fine?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Did Mama know?””

He nodded.

“She found out when a collection agency contacted her. She paid part of the debt, then helped me negotiate the rest.””

Imani remembered the months when Marcus had stopped visiting on Sundays. She remembered their mother quietly sending him money and telling Imani that her brother was going through a difficult period.

She had assumed it was a temporary financial setback.

“What does that have to do with Darius?””

Marcus looked down at his hands.

“Richard Carter approached me.””

The room seemed to shrink around them.

“When?””

“About two years before your wedding.””

“Why?””

“He knew I was in debt. He said he could help me settle it.””

Imani stood.

“You took money from Darius's father?””

“Not exactly.””

“Marcus.””

He looked up.

“Yes.””

The word hung between them.

Imani walked to the kitchen counter and gripped its edge.

“How much?””

“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””

She turned slowly.

“And what did he want in return?””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“He asked questions about you.””

“What questions?””

“Where you worked. Whether you had a boyfriend. Whether Mama had ever told you about Thomas Whitaker.””

Imani's stomach twisted.

“What did you tell him?””

“Nothing about the estate. I didn't know there was an estate. I told him you were single, that you owned the house, and that Mama had always been protective of you.””

“You told a stranger that I owned the house?””

“He already knew.””

“How?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you tell him where I lived?””

“Imani, he knew the address before he contacted me.””

She stared at her brother.

“You let a man who was trying to buy access to me pay your debts.””

Marcus flinched.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you sold him information about your sister.””

“I didn't know what he intended to do.””

“But you knew he wanted information about me.””

“Yes.””

“And you took the money.””

He bowed his head.

“Yes.””

Imani turned away.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to throw every document on the table at him.

But the sight of her brother sitting with his hands clasped between his knees reminded her of the boy who had held her hand at their mother's funeral, crying so hard he could barely stand.

He had been twenty-eight then.

She had been twenty-four.

They had promised each other they would never let the world divide them the way grief had divided their family.

Now she wondered whether he had broken that promise long before she knew it was being tested.

“Did Mama find out?”” she asked.

Marcus nodded.

“She discovered the payments after Richard contacted me again. She was furious.””

“What did she say?””

“She told me I had made a terrible mistake. She said Richard wasn't helping me out of kindness. He was trying to get close to you.””

Imani sat down slowly.

“And what did you do?””

“I paid back what I could. I signed an agreement to repay the rest.””

“Did Richard threaten you?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He said if I told you about him, he would expose my debt and make sure I lost everything.””

Imani stared at him.

“So you kept quiet.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“No,” she said.

“You were protecting yourself.””

He nodded, accepting the blow.

“You're right.””

The simplicity of his answer took some of the anger out of her.

Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“I kept this.””

It was a copy of an email dated two years earlier.

The sender was Richard Carter.

The subject line read: *The Whitaker Daughter.*

Imani unfolded the page.

You have no reason to worry about the arrangement. My son understands what is expected of him. When the time comes, he will secure the family's position. Your debt will be forgiven when the matter is complete.

Imani read the paragraph twice.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“Did you know Darius was involved?””

“No.””

“Did you know Richard planned for him to marry me?””

“No. I swear to you.””

“Did you know about the inheritance?””

“No.””

She studied his face.

She had spent the previous day wondering whether Darius had ever loved her.

Now she was trying to decide whether she could trust her own brother.

“Why didn't you tell me about this when we found the box?””

“Because I was afraid you'd think I helped arrange your marriage.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Marcus leaned forward.

“I didn't introduce you to Darius. I didn't tell him where you worked. I didn't know Richard had a son who was interested in you. I only knew that Richard wanted information about our family.””

“Did Mama ever tell you about Thomas?””

“Not until she became ill.””

“What did she say?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“She said our father wasn't the man we thought he was.””

Imani went still.

“Our father?””

“Our biological father,” he clarified.

“Mama said she had lied about him. She said the story about the construction accident was something she'd invented to keep us from asking questions.””

“Why?””

“I don't know. She never explained everything.””

“Did she say Thomas Whitaker was my father?””

“No. She said Thomas was the man who had helped her. She told me there were documents in the storage unit, but she made me promise not to open them unless you were threatened.””

Imani pressed her fingers to her temples.

“So Mama lied about my father, Richard tried to buy information about me, Darius married me, and you kept all of it secret.””

Marcus's face crumpled.

“When you put it that way, I sound like the worst brother in the world.””

“I'm not interested in how you sound.””

“I know.””

“I'm interested in whether I can trust you.””

He looked at her.

“I don't expect you to trust me just because I'm your brother.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus slid the email across the table.

“Let me help you find out who sent the message. I still have the account Richard used to contact me. There may be other emails.””

Imani considered it.

She did not forgive him.

Not yet.

But she understood that if Richard Carter had been building this plan for years, Marcus might be one of the few people who could help her uncover the truth.

“Fine,” she said.

“But you do not access my accounts, enter my house without permission, or contact Darius without telling me first.””

Marcus nodded.

“Agreed.””

“And if I discover you've lied about anything else, we're done.””

He swallowed.

“Understood.””

They spent the next hour reviewing the old emails.

Most were ordinary business correspondence. Others contained vague references to a future arrangement, the Whitaker family, and a debt that would eventually be forgiven.

Then Marcus found a message sent six months after Imani's wedding.

It contained a scanned attachment.

The attachment was a photograph of Darius standing beside Richard Carter outside a restaurant.

The date was three months before Darius had proposed.

Imani stared at the image.

Darius wore a navy suit.

His father stood beside him, one hand resting on his son's shoulder.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a sentence in black ink.

*The plan begins when she says yes.*

Imani's mouth went dry.

“Who wrote that?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't know.””

She enlarged the image on her laptop.

A reflection in the restaurant window revealed another person sitting at the table behind them.

A woman with short hair.

A familiar face.

Imani leaned closer.

She knew that face.

Not from her wedding.

Not from the hospital.

From the framed family photographs in her mother's storage unit.

It was Evelyn Carter, sitting across from Richard.

Her mother had been involved in the arrangement.

At least at some point.

Imani pushed back from the table.

“No.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

“Imani—”

“No. Mama would never have done this to me.””

“Maybe there's an explanation.””

“Then where is it?””

Neither of them had an answer.

Her phone rang.

Danielle Brooks.

Imani answered.

“Danielle?””

“We've reviewed the initial documents with the forensic specialist,” Danielle said.

“I need you to come to my office as soon as possible.””

“Why?””

“The marital agreement wasn't merely drafted. It appears to have been submitted to a lender as supporting documentation for a financial application.””

Imani's blood ran cold.

“What kind of application?””

“A loan application.””

“Against what?””

There was a pause.

“Your house.””

Imani gripped the edge of the table.

“How much?””

“The application requested a loan of six hundred thousand dollars.””

Marcus stood.

“Six hundred thousand?””

Danielle continued.

“The application identifies Darius as an authorized representative acting with your consent. It includes the forged signature we've been examining.””

“Was the loan approved?””

“No. The lender flagged inconsistencies and requested additional verification. We are contacting the institution to preserve the records and determine what steps are appropriate.””

Imani closed her eyes.

Six hundred thousand dollars.

Someone had tried to borrow against the home she had spent years paying for, using a document she had never signed.

“Danielle, can the lender take my house?””

“I'm not aware of any valid lien at this stage. We need to verify the property's current title status and confirm whether anything was recorded. Don't panic, but do not assume there is no risk until the review is complete.””

“I understand.””

“Also, I want you to know that the lender's records identify the person who submitted the application.””

Imani's pulse hammered.

“Who?””

“Darius Carter.””

The call ended.

Imani stared at the phone.

Marcus began pacing.

“That man is going to destroy everything.””

“No,” Imani said.

She looked at the deed.

Then at the ultrasound picture.

Then at the photograph of her mother sitting across from Richard Carter.

“Not if I find out what he was really after.””

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from Keisha.

*I know you're probably not going to believe me, but Darius lied to both of us. I have something that proves it.*

A second message followed.

*If you want the truth about your mother, meet me tomorrow. Come alone.*

Imani stared at the screen.

Marcus read it over her shoulder.

“Absolutely not.””

“I'm not going to meet her alone.””

“Good.””

“But I'm going to meet her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She helped him betray you.””

“Maybe. Or maybe she knows something he doesn't want me to hear.””

Imani saved the messages and sent them to Danielle.

Then she typed one question to Keisha.

*What do you know about my mother?*

The reply arrived almost immediately.

*Enough to know Darius never intended to stay married to you.*

Imani felt her throat tighten.

Another message appeared.

*He told me what he planned to do after you had the baby.*

She stared at the screen.

May you like

Then the final message arrived.

*He said once the child was born, you would have nothing left to bargain with.*
