Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Buried
I stared at the newspaper clipping until the words blurred.
My father’s name.
Printed in black ink.
Beside a story about Jordan.
I read the headline again.
Then again.
My mind refused to connect the pieces.
Marcus Bennett.
My father.
The man who had spent my entire life teaching me that honesty mattered.
The man who had looked me in the eyes yesterday and told me not to let love make me ignore the truth.
But now his name was sitting in front of me.
Connected to the one secret Jordan had been trying to hide.
I looked up at Kara.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she watched my face.
Like she already knew what was happening inside my head.
“You didn’t know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I closed the folder.
“No.””
My voice sounded distant.
“What does my father have to do with Jordan?””
Kara took a slow breath.
“That depends on what Jordan told you.””
“Nothing.””
The answer came too quickly.
“He told me nothing.””
She nodded.
“That’s what I thought.””
I pushed the folder toward her.
“I need you to explain.””
Kara looked down at the documents.
Then back at me.
“Eight years ago, Jordan was in a custody battle with Alyssa.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you know the version Jordan wanted you to know.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then tell me the real one.””
Kara opened the folder.
The newspaper clipping was only the first page.
Behind it were court documents.
Police reports.
Letters.
Things I didn’t understand yet.
“Jordan and Alyssa were fighting over their son, Elijah.””
“Elijah?””
“Yes.””
“The nine-year-old?””
Kara nodded.
“He was six at the time.””
I looked at the documents.
“Why did they go to court?””
“Because Alyssa wanted full custody.””
“Why?””
Kara hesitated.
“Because she claimed Jordan was unstable.””
I frowned.
“Was he?””
She looked away.
“That’s complicated.””
I almost laughed.
Even now, that word followed this story everywhere.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because the truth is usually not simple.””
“Then give me the truth.””
Kara was quiet for a moment.
Then she said:
“Jordan was struggling. He was working two jobs. He was trying to support two children. He made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
“He missed payments.””
“That’s it?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
My heart sank.
“What else?””
Kara folded her hands on the table.
“He had a temper.””
I said nothing.
“Not with the children,” she added quickly.
“I want to be clear about that.””
“But?””
“But he and Alyssa fought constantly.””
I looked down.
That sounded like the man I knew.
Not violent.
Not cruel.
But someone who avoided problems until they became bigger.
“What happened with Elijah?””
Kara looked at the window.
“After the court hearing, Jordan was supposed to have supervised visits until they decided the custody arrangement.””
“Supervised?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Alyssa convinced the judge he needed monitoring.””
“Did he?””
Kara looked uncomfortable.
“That’s where things get complicated.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Please stop saying that.””
She sighed.
“Jordan made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He left Elijah with someone who wasn’t approved.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Who?””
Kara looked at me.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
Kara didn’t react.
“He said Marcus was the only person he trusted.””
My hands went cold.
“My dad?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Why?””
“Because my father barely knows Jordan.””
Kara looked surprised.
“Barely knows him?””
“Yes.””
She leaned back.
“Nia, how long have you been with Jordan?””
“Two years.””
“And how long has Marcus known him?””
I stopped.
I didn’t know.
I had never asked.
Because my father had never acted like he knew Jordan.
He had always been distant.
Polite.
Cold.
I thought it was because he didn’t approve of him.
Not because there was history.
“How did they meet?””
Kara looked down.
“Through you.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“Jordan met your father before he met you.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“That’s impossible.””
“No, it isn’t.””
“When?””
“Almost three years ago.””
I stood suddenly.
The chair moved loudly against the floor.
“No.””
People in the café glanced over.
I didn’t care.
“My father would have told me.””
Kara’s expression softened.
“Would he?””
I wanted to answer yes.
I wanted to defend him.
But the truth was…
I didn’t know.
My father loved me.
I knew that.
But he had always been the kind of person who carried burdens alone.
The kind of person who thought protecting someone meant keeping them away from the truth.
“What happened that day?””
Kara closed the folder.
“Jordan needed somewhere safe for Elijah to stay.””
“Because of the custody situation?””
“Yes.””
“And my father agreed?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“My father wouldn’t do something illegal.””
“I didn’t say illegal.””
“Then why is this in the newspaper?””
Kara pushed the clipping back toward me.
“Because Elijah disappeared.””
My breathing stopped.
“He disappeared while he was with my father?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the article again.
The words finally became clear.
*Child Missing During Custody Dispute.*
My fingers trembled.
“When?””
“Eight years ago.””
“And what happened?””
Kara looked at me.
“That’s the question nobody answered.””
I stared.
“What do you mean?””
“Elijah was found two days later.””
Relief flashed through me.
Then disappeared.
“Where?””
Kara’s face changed.
“He was found alone.””
“Alone where?””
“In a parking lot.””
My stomach twisted.
“Was he hurt?””
“No.””
“Then why is this such a big deal?””
“Because nobody knew how he got there.””
I didn’t speak.
“Jordan said Marcus took Elijah to the park that afternoon.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“Marcus said Elijah ran away.””
I shook my head.
“My father would never lose track of a child.””
Kara watched me carefully.
“That’s exactly what Jordan said.””
“What?””
“Jordan believed Marcus was covering something up.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why?””
Kara opened another document.
She turned it around.
It was a statement.
A handwritten one.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My father’s.
The sight of it made my entire body freeze.
“What is that?””
Kara answered quietly.
“Something your father never wanted you to see.””
I picked up the paper.
The words were hard to read because my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
It was a statement.
A confession of some kind.
But before I could finish the first paragraph, I saw a sentence that made my blood run cold.
*I made a promise to Jordan that I would take this secret to my grave.*
I looked up.
“What secret?””
Kara didn’t answer.
She looked terrified.
I forced myself to continue.
The next lines felt heavier.
*If Nia ever finds out the truth, she will never forgive me.*
My heart stopped.
My name.
My father had written my name.
Not Jordan’s.
Not Alyssa’s.
Mine.
I looked at Kara.
“What does this have to do with me?””
She swallowed.
“That’s why I contacted you.””
“What?””
“Because the reason Jordan hid his children from you…”
She leaned closer.
“Isn’t the biggest secret.””
I felt a chill move through me.
“What is?””
Kara looked down at the paper.
Then whispered:
“The biggest secret is why your father already knew Jordan was dangerous before he ever warned you about him.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly, everything changed.
My father wasn’t just the person who discovered Jordan’s lies.
He was part of the story.
My phone buzzed on the table.
A message.
From my father.
I looked at the screen.
One sentence.
*Nia, please don’t believe anything Kara tells you.*
I stared at the message.
Then another one appeared.
This time from Kara’s phone.
Her face went pale.
She looked down.
And whispered:
“He found out I contacted you.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
Kara slowly turned her phone toward me.
There was a new message from an unknown number.
May you like
Only six words.
*Stop digging, or she learns the truth.*
