Chapter 3: The Woman Who Walked Back Into the Mansion

Evelyn Bennett had never waited in a reception area in her life.

She considered waiting something that happened to people who lacked influence.

Yet there she was, standing beneath the bright lights of the twenty-sixth floor reception area, gripping a burgundy handbag while a security guard politely refused to let her pass.

Marcus stood beside her.

His navy suit was still immaculate, but his tie had been loosened. A faint red stain marked the cuff of his white shirt where the wineglass had shattered.

Evelyn looked furious.

“This is ridiculous,” she snapped.

“My son is a major business executive. Do you understand who he is?””

The receptionist maintained her professional smile.

“Yes, ma'am. Mr. Reeves has been informed that you're here.””

“Then tell him to come downstairs.””

“I'm afraid he cannot.””

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“Cannot?””

Before the receptionist could answer, the elevator doors opened.

Daniel Reeves stepped out.

“Mrs. Bennett. Mr. Bennett.””

Evelyn immediately approached him.

“Finally. We need to speak to you.””

Daniel glanced at Marcus.

“Good evening. What can I help you with?””

“Your client has received some very misleading information,” Evelyn announced.

Daniel remained calm.

“Which information would that be?””

“The inheritance. We understand there's been some sort of transfer.””

“That's correct.””

Evelyn adjusted her handbag.

“Then I believe we need to clarify certain family matters before this becomes unnecessarily complicated.””

Daniel looked at her for a moment.

“Family matters?””

“Yes. Nia is still legally connected to my son until the divorce is finalized.””

Daniel nodded.

“Then you should discuss the legal status of your son's marriage with his attorney.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mr. Reeves, we're not here to argue. We just want to talk to Nia.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ms. Bennett is not obligated to meet with you.””

Marcus's expression tightened.

“I'm her husband.””

“According to the agreement you submitted tonight, you are seeking to end that relationship.””

Evelyn's face flushed.

“That is precisely why we're here. We want to reconsider the agreement.””

Daniel glanced at his watch.

“It's nearly midnight.””

“This is an emergency,” Marcus said.

Daniel nodded toward the conference room.

“Then perhaps you should explain why.””

He led them inside.

Nia was standing beside the window.

She had removed her coat and placed it over the back of a chair. Her beige blouse was slightly creased, and her hair had loosened around her shoulders.

She looked tired.

But she did not look frightened.

Evelyn stopped when she saw her.

For a second, neither woman spoke.

Then Evelyn forced a smile.

“Nia, darling.””

Nia turned.

“Don't.””

Evelyn blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“Don't call me darling.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nia, please. Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Just five minutes.””

“You had six years.””

Marcus looked down.

Evelyn moved toward the table.

“I think everyone is getting emotional. Let's remember that we're still family.””

Nia almost smiled.

“Twenty minutes ago, you told me I was finished with your family.””

“That was said in anger.””

“No. It was said very clearly.””

Evelyn placed her handbag on the table.

“I apologize if my words offended you.””

Nia looked at her.

“You don't apologize for what you did. You apologize because you found out I inherited money.””

Marcus stepped between them.

“That's not fair.””

Nia turned toward him.

“Isn't it?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“Look, I know tonight was difficult. I should have handled the divorce differently.””

“You should have handled our marriage differently.””

“I was under a lot of pressure.””

“From whom?””

Marcus glanced at his mother.

Nia followed his eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not an excuse.

A direction.

Evelyn immediately lifted her chin.

“Marcus is a successful man with responsibilities. He cannot spend his life trying to satisfy someone who refuses to understand his family's position.””

Nia stared at her.

“Your family's position?””

“Yes.””

“Your family rejected me because you thought I had nothing.””

Evelyn folded her arms.

“We wanted what was best for Marcus.””

“And that meant humiliating his wife?””

“It meant protecting our family.””

Nia nodded slowly.

“Interesting.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Could you please bring out the Bennett Development documents?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Marcus noticed the company name.

His face changed.

“Why do you have those?””

Daniel placed the financial statements on the table.

“Because Whitmore Global Holdings is a creditor of Bennett Development Group.””

Evelyn stiffened.

“That's a private business matter.””

“It is,” Daniel replied.

“And it's relevant to tonight's discussion.””

Marcus picked up the top page.

He scanned the figures.

“Forty-eight million?””

Daniel nodded.

“Approximately.””

Marcus looked up.

“I thought we had an extension.””

“The extension remains subject to the contractual conditions.””

Evelyn turned sharply toward her son.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus ignored her.

He flipped through the papers.

“Who authorized this review?””

“Your former wife's trust is now the controlling beneficiary of Whitmore Global Holdings.””

The room fell silent.

Evelyn looked at Nia.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Nia.

“That's impossible.””

Nia said nothing.

Marcus put the documents down.

“You're telling me Nia controls Whitmore Global?””

“Through the trust, yes.””

Evelyn gave a nervous laugh.

“Well, surely that doesn't mean she can interfere with Bennett Development.””

Daniel opened another document.

“Your company's credit facility contains specific provisions concerning changes in controlling interests, disclosure obligations, and certain acts that could constitute a material breach.””

Marcus's face grew pale.

“What acts?””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“Ms. Bennett has not instructed us to initiate any enforcement action.””

Evelyn immediately turned toward her.

“Good. Because she wouldn't.””

Nia raised an eyebrow.

“Wouldn't I?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Let's not pretend you're a businesswoman overnight. You have no experience running a company of that size.””

“Perhaps.””

“You have no understanding of the consequences of interfering with a business that employs hundreds of people.””

Nia studied her.

“You're right about one thing. I don't want innocent employees hurt.””

Evelyn relaxed slightly.

“Exactly.””

“But I also won't allow anyone to use their employees as an excuse to mistreat me.””

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“Nia, let's be reasonable. We can work this out.””

She looked at him.

“Work what out?””

“Our marriage. The company. Everything.””

Nia gave a small, humorless laugh.

“Twenty minutes ago, you wanted me to sign away everything for one dollar.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I didn't know about the inheritance.””

“Would that have changed anything?””

He didn't answer.

Nia waited.

Finally, he said:

“Of course it would have.””

The honesty was so effortless that it almost made her smile.

“Thank you.””

Marcus frowned.

“For what?””

“For finally telling the truth.””

Evelyn grabbed her son's arm.

“Marcus, stop talking.””

But Nia had already turned away.

Daniel closed the financial folder.

“Mrs. Bennett, I think this meeting should end here.””

Evelyn's eyes flashed.

“You cannot throw us out.””

“I'm not throwing anyone out. I'm informing you that Ms. Bennett has requested no further discussion without legal representation.””

Marcus looked at Nia.

“Are you really going to do this?””

She picked up her coat.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything because you're angry?””

Nia stopped beside him.

“No, Marcus. I'm finally refusing to destroy myself to keep your family comfortable.””

Then she walked toward the door.

Evelyn watched her leave.

The moment the door closed, her expression turned vicious.

“This is your fault,” she whispered.

Marcus stared at her.

“My fault?””

“You should have known about this inheritance before you divorced her.””

He looked almost offended.

“How was I supposed to know?””

Evelyn grabbed the divorce agreement.

“Because you were married to her!””

Marcus stared at the document.

For the first time, he seemed to understand the magnitude of what had happened.

They had not simply ended a marriage.

They had ended a marriage to the woman who now controlled the company holding their largest debt.

And the worst part was that she had walked away without asking them for anything.

At 1:17 a.m., Nia sat alone in the guest suite of the Whitmore family townhouse.

The room was quiet.

A small fire burned in the fireplace.

Her grandfather's photograph rested on the bedside table.

She had changed into a soft white robe and washed the makeup from her face.

For the first time that night, she allowed herself to breathe.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

*Marcus:* We need to fix this. I still love you.

She stared at the words.

Then another message arrived.

*Marcus:* My mother was wrong. I should have stood up for you.

Nia placed the phone on the table.

She remembered Marcus bringing her coffee when she worked late.

She remembered the way he used to kiss her forehead before leaving for the office.

She remembered dancing with him in the kitchen when the power went out during a summer storm.

Those memories had been real.

That was what made the betrayal so painful.

People often imagined that leaving a bad marriage was easy once the truth became obvious.

But the truth rarely erased the good memories.

It simply changed what those memories meant.

Nia opened the drawer of the bedside table.

Inside was a small velvet box Daniel had brought from his office.

She opened it.

A simple gold necklace rested inside.

It had belonged to her grandmother.

A tiny engraved message was visible on the back.

*Be kind. Be wise. Never disappear.*

Nia touched the inscription.

“I won't, Grandpa,” she whispered.

Her phone rang again.

This time, the caller was Daniel.

She answered.

“Hello?””

“I'm sorry to disturb you.””

“It's all right.””

“Something has come up.””

Nia sat straighter.

“What happened?””

“We received a notification from Bennett Development's legal department.””

“What kind of notification?””

“They've submitted a request for an emergency restructuring of their outstanding debt.””

Nia frowned.

“Why would they do that tonight?””

“Because they appear to believe that the change in beneficial control gives them grounds to renegotiate the existing agreement.””

“Does it?””

“Not by itself.””

She looked toward the fireplace.

“What else?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Their submission includes a declaration that all material family and ownership relationships were disclosed to Whitmore Global during the original negotiations.””

Nia frowned.

“Were they?””

“No.””

“Who signed the declaration?””

Daniel turned a page.

“Evelyn Bennett.””

Nia's stomach tightened.

“What did she fail to disclose?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

He paused.

Then he added:

“There is another problem. A much bigger one.””

Nia stood and walked toward the window.

“Tell me.””

“Three years ago, Bennett Development transferred a substantial property portfolio into a private company.””

“Why?””

“Officially, to reorganize its commercial holdings. But the transfer may have violated the terms of the financing agreement.””

“Can you prove it?””

“We need the original transaction records.””

“Then get them.””

“We're trying. However, the company that holds those records is not owned by Bennett Development.””

Nia waited.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“It's owned by Evelyn personally.””

Nia stared into the darkness beyond the window.

“Why would she move company properties into her own private business?””

“That is precisely what we intend to find out.””

Nia's phone vibrated with another incoming message.

An unknown number.

She opened it.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

It showed Marcus standing outside a restaurant with a beautiful brunette woman.

His hand rested against the small of her back.

The date displayed in the corner was three months earlier.

Below the photograph was a message.

*You should know why he really wanted the divorce. Ask him about the woman in the photograph.*

Nia's fingers went cold.

She enlarged the picture.

The woman was smiling.

Marcus was looking at her the way he used to look at Nia.

Then another message appeared.

*Her name is Victoria. And she has something that belongs to your grandfather's company.*

Nia read it twice.

She immediately called Daniel back.

“Daniel, I need you to look at something.””

“What is it?””

She forwarded the photograph.

A few seconds passed.

Then she heard him inhale sharply.

“Ms. Bennett?””

“Yes?””

“Where did you get this?””

“An anonymous message.””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said something that made the room feel suddenly colder.

“I know this woman.””

“Who is she?””

“Victoria Shaw. She worked for your grandfather's investment office.””

Nia gripped the phone.

“Worked?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“She disappeared six months ago after requesting access to a confidential file concerning Bennett Development.””

Nia looked at the photograph again.

Marcus.

Victoria.

Three months ago.

Her husband had been seeing a woman connected to her grandfather's company while preparing the divorce.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “what was in that file?””

He didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost inaudible.

“It contained the original documents proving that someone had been secretly transferring Whitmore assets.””

Nia's heart began to pound.

“Who?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Evelyn Bennett.””

And then he added:

May you like

“Ms. Bennett, I think your grandfather knew exactly what this family was capable of.””

*But the next document Daniel sent her would reveal that the divorce had never been Marcus's idea in the first place.*
