Chapter 5: The Signature That Destroyed His Defense

Marcus didn't touch the document.

He stared at his signature as though someone had forged it.

Evelyn reached across the table and pulled the page toward herself.

“That's a preliminary authorization,” she said sharply.

“It doesn't prove anything.””

Nia remained seated.

“Then I'm sure you'll have no difficulty explaining it during the independent audit.””

Evelyn turned toward the chairman.

“Robert, this is becoming absurd. We came here to discuss a restructuring proposal, not to be interrogated by a woman who has no experience in commercial finance.””

Robert Hale folded his hands.

“Mrs. Bennett, the document raises legitimate questions.””

“It's being taken out of context.””

“Then provide the context.””

Evelyn's jaw tightened.

Marcus finally spoke.

“I signed it because my mother told me it was a routine administrative document.””

Nia turned toward him.

“Did you read it?””

“I was told it concerned the property restructuring.””

“Did you know the properties were being transferred into a company owned by your mother?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Yes.””

Evelyn slammed her hand against the table.

“Marcus!””

He flinched.

Nia watched them.

For six years, she'd seen Evelyn control conversations with a raised eyebrow, a carefully chosen insult, or a sharp correction.

But today, Marcus looked less like a successful businessman and more like a child waiting for permission to speak.

Robert Hale leaned forward.

“Mr. Bennett, did you disclose this transfer to Whitmore Global?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because my mother told me the transaction had been approved.””

Daniel opened another folder.

“By whom?””

Marcus looked at him.

“I don't know.””

Daniel placed a letter on the table.

“This is the only approval we have located. It was issued for a different transaction involving two properties, not seven.””

Marcus picked it up.

His expression changed.

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“This meeting is over.””

Robert raised his hand.

“Please sit down, Mrs. Bennett.””

“I will not sit here while my family's business is being attacked.””

“Your family's business is a creditor's concern when it owes that creditor forty-eight million dollars.””

The room fell silent.

Nia looked at the chairman.

“What is the next step?””

Robert glanced around the table.

“I propose that the board authorize an independent forensic review of Bennett Development's financial disclosures and suspend any new discretionary financing until the review is complete.””

Daniel nodded.

“That would be consistent with the agreement.””

Evelyn's face hardened.

“You cannot freeze our company.””

“We are not freezing your company,” Robert replied.

“We are protecting the interests of our shareholders and creditors.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Mother, perhaps we should cooperate.””

Evelyn turned on him.

“Don't you dare undermine me.””

Nia closed her folder.

“There's something else I want on the record.””

Everyone looked at her.

“I will not use my position to interfere with ordinary business operations. Bennett Development employs hundreds of people, and those employees are not responsible for the decisions made by its executives.””

Robert nodded.

“Agreed.””

“But I will not approve a restructuring proposal until the original transactions have been independently reviewed.””

Evelyn's lips parted.

“You have no idea what you're doing.””

Nia met her eyes.

“Perhaps not. But I know how to read a signature.””

She stood.

“And I know whose name is on this one.””

The meeting ended at 4:12 p.m.

Nia was halfway down the corridor when Marcus caught up with her.

“Nia, wait.””

She stopped.

“What?””

He glanced toward the boardroom.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

“Why?””

“Because I need to explain.””

She looked at him.

“You've had plenty of opportunities.””

“Not like this.””

Nia crossed her arms.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“My mother has been making decisions for the company for years. I didn't understand the full situation.””

“But you signed the documents.””

“I trusted her.””

“And you didn't trust me enough to tell me?””

He looked down.

“I didn't want you involved.””

Nia gave a small, bitter smile.

“You didn't want me involved because I might ask questions.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like what happened.””

He stepped closer.

“Look, I know I made mistakes. But I never stopped caring about you.””

Nia studied his face.

“Do you remember our fifth anniversary?””

Marcus blinked.

“What?””

“You came home at eleven. I had cooked dinner. I waited for three hours.””

“I had a meeting.””

“You told me your mother needed you at the office.””

“She did.””

“You came home with Victoria's perfume on your jacket.””

Marcus looked away.

Nia continued.

“I asked you about it. You told me I was imagining things.””

He swallowed.

“I was seeing her.””

The words came quietly.

Nia nodded.

“I know.””

“It started after my mother introduced us.””

“And when did it end?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Nia laughed once, without humor.

“Of course.””

He reached for her hand.

She moved it away.

“Don't.””

“Nia, please. I know this sounds terrible, but Victoria wasn't the reason I wanted a divorce.””

“What was?””

Marcus looked toward the windows.

“My mother believed that you might inherit something from your grandfather.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten.

“She knew?””

“Not the amount. But she knew Thomas Whitmore had substantial holdings.””

“And you?””

“I knew your grandfather was wealthy.””

“How?””

Marcus hesitated.

“He mentioned something to me before he died.””

Nia stared at him.

“What did he say?””

Marcus swallowed.

“He told me that if I ever made you feel trapped in our marriage, he would make sure you had somewhere to go.””

For several seconds, Nia couldn't speak.

Her grandfather had warned him.

He had looked Marcus in the eye and told him to treat his granddaughter with respect.

And Marcus had ignored him.

“Did you think I would inherit everything?””

“I didn't know.””

“So you decided to divorce me before you knew whether there was anything to inherit?””

Marcus's silence answered her.

Nia stepped back.

“You weren't protecting yourself from my grandfather's money, Marcus. You were trying to protect your mother's secrets.””

He lowered his head.

“I made a terrible decision.””

“Yes.””

“I want to fix it.””

“You can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because you're still asking what you can get back.””

She turned away.

Marcus called after her.

“Nia!””

She stopped but didn't turn.

“Do you remember the lake in Connecticut? Where I proposed?””

“Yes.””

“I meant what I said there.””

Nia looked over her shoulder.

“Then you should have kept meaning it.””

She walked away.

At 6:30 p.m., Nia returned to the Whitmore townhouse.

Daniel had arranged for a security specialist to meet her there.

His name was Samuel Brooks, a former corporate investigations director who now worked with the Whitmore estate.

He placed a tablet on the dining table.

“Ms. Bennett, we've located Victoria Shaw.””

Nia sat immediately.

“Where?””

“She contacted our legal department this afternoon. She's currently staying at a hotel in Boston.””

“Is she safe?””

“As far as we can determine, yes. She has requested a meeting with you.””

“Why?””

Samuel exchanged a glance with Daniel.

“She says she has evidence that could change the entire Bennett investigation.””

Nia leaned forward.

“What kind of evidence?””

Samuel tapped the tablet.

A photograph appeared.

It showed a large brown envelope resting on a hotel desk.

A handwritten label was visible.

*ORIGINAL WHITMORE TRANSFER RECORDS.*

Nia looked at Daniel.

“Can she bring them here?””

“She wants to meet somewhere neutral,” he said.

“Then arrange it.””

Daniel nodded.

“There is another detail.””

“What?””

“Victoria says she has information concerning your marriage.””

Nia looked at the photograph again.

“Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She claims Marcus was not simply involved in his mother's plan. She believes he was the person who originally suggested using your marriage to gain access to Whitmore's financial network.””

Nia's throat tightened.

“No.””

“That's what she alleges. We haven't verified it.””

Nia looked toward the dark window.

The possibility felt unbearable.

For six years, she had believed Marcus had chosen her because he loved her.

Now she wondered whether their entire relationship had been something else.

“Arrange the meeting,” she said.

At 8:15 p.m., Nia received a call from an unfamiliar number.

“Ms. Bennett?””

The voice belonged to a woman.

“Victoria?””

“Yes.””

Nia sat down.

“I'm glad you called.””

“I don't know if I should be glad.””

“Are you safe?””

A brief pause.

“I think so.””

“Daniel says you have information.””

“I do. But I need you to understand something before we meet.””

“Tell me.””

“Your husband didn't accidentally meet me at a business dinner.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“What do you mean?””

“Evelyn arranged the introduction. But Marcus had been asking questions about your grandfather for months before that.””

Nia's fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because he believed Thomas Whitmore had hidden ownership interests in several companies connected to Bennett Development.””

“Did he know about the inheritance?””

“Not the full amount.””

“Then what did he want?””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Access.””

Nia looked toward Daniel, who was standing by the doorway.

“Access to what?””

“Your grandfather's private investment records.””

Nia felt a chill move through her.

Victoria continued.

“I have the original correspondence. I also have a recording of a conversation between Marcus and Evelyn.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two months before your wedding.””

Nia stopped breathing.

Two months before the wedding.

Before the vows.

Before the diamond ring.

Before Marcus had promised to love her forever.

“What's on the recording?””

Victoria took a shaky breath.

“Your future husband discussing how to make sure you trusted him enough to eventually give him access to your grandfather's financial documents.””

Nia gripped the phone.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I made a terrible mistake. I helped them.””

Nia was silent.

Victoria's voice cracked.

“I thought it was just a business arrangement. I didn't understand what Evelyn intended to do until I saw the transfer records. When I tried to stop her, she threatened me.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“Victoria, listen carefully. We will meet with Daniel present. You will have legal protection, and nobody will force you to do anything.””

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“The recording doesn't just involve Marcus and Evelyn.””

A pause.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Your grandfather was there too.””

Nia slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel stared at her.

“What did she say?””

Nia looked at him.

“She says Thomas Whitmore knew about the plan before I married Marcus.””

Daniel's face went completely still.

“That cannot be right.””

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather never mentioned such a conversation.””

Nia looked at the photograph on the tablet.

Then she noticed a date printed beneath it.

The recording had been made on October 14.

Her wedding was November 22.

Five weeks earlier.

She stood.

“Daniel, I want to hear that recording.””

“We need to verify it first.””

“I understand.””

But her voice was trembling now.

Because one question had begun to haunt her.

May you like

If her grandfather knew Marcus was planning to use their marriage for financial access, why had he allowed the wedding to happen?

And what had he said to Marcus that night?
