Chapter 6: The Secret Her Grandfather Took to His Grave

The hotel conference room in Boston was nearly empty when Nia arrived the following morning.

A large window overlooked the Charles River.

Grey clouds hung above the water, and the room smelled faintly of coffee and furniture polish.

Daniel sat beside Nia.

Samuel Brooks stood near the door.

At exactly 10:03 a.m., the door opened.

Victoria Shaw entered.

She was in her mid-thirties, with shoulder-length brown hair and tired eyes. She wore a simple black coat and carried a leather document case.

For several seconds, she looked at Nia without speaking.

Then she approached the table.

“Ms. Bennett.””

“Nia is fine.””

Victoria sat.

“I don't know how to apologize.””

“You can start by telling me the truth.””

Victoria nodded.

She placed the document case on the table.

Inside were several folders, two USB drives, and a small digital recorder.

“I kept copies of everything because I knew Evelyn would eventually try to destroy the original records.””

Daniel examined the folders.

“These appear to be the original transaction documents.””

“They are.””

“Where did you obtain them?””

“From the Bennett Development archive. I was working on the financing review when I discovered that the reported property valuations didn't match the actual transfers.””

Daniel opened the first folder.

“Were you authorized to access these files?””

“Yes. I was assigned to review the Whitmore financing agreement.””

“And when did you discover the discrepancies?””

“About eight months ago.””

Nia leaned forward.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

Victoria looked at her.

“Because I didn't know how much you knew about your grandfather's business.””

“I knew almost nothing.””

“I understand that now.””

Victoria took a breath.

“Evelyn told me that you were aware of the financial arrangements and had agreed to cooperate. She said Marcus was simply helping you understand the family business.””

Nia stared at her.

“That was a lie.””

“I know.””

Victoria looked down.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel opened another folder.

Inside were copies of internal emails.

The first showed Evelyn instructing an accountant to create a separate company for the properties.

The second showed a request to alter the recorded transfer dates.

The third contained a payment authorization.

Nia recognized the name immediately.

*Victoria Shaw.*

She looked up.

“You signed this?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Evelyn told me the transfer had already been approved. She said the documents were being corrected for accounting purposes.””

“Did you know the information was false?””

“Not at first.””

“And later?””

Victoria's eyes filled.

“Later, I did.””

The room went quiet.

Nia looked at the documents.

She wanted to hate Victoria.

But she also understood that the woman sitting across from her had apparently helped conceal the very transactions that threatened her grandfather's company.

“I need you to understand something,” Nia said.

Victoria nodded.

“I do.””

“I won't protect you from the consequences of your actions.””

“I wouldn't expect you to.””

“But if you cooperate fully and tell the truth, Daniel will make sure your rights are respected.””

Victoria nodded again.

“Thank you.””

Daniel placed the digital recorder on the table.

“Now, about the recording.””

Victoria took a USB drive from her bag.

“This is the original file. I made a copy after the conversation because I realized what Marcus and Evelyn were planning.””

Daniel examined it.

“We'll need to preserve the metadata and establish authenticity.””

“Of course.””

Nia looked at the recorder.

“Can we listen?””

Daniel glanced at Samuel.

Samuel nodded.

Daniel connected the USB drive to his laptop.

A progress bar appeared.

Then a man's voice filled the room.

Marcus.

“She's trusting me more than she trusts anyone in her family.””

Evelyn answered.

“Good. That's what we need.””

Marcus laughed.

“She's already offered to organize some of her grandfather's old papers. I told her I'd help.””

Evelyn's voice became sharper.

“Don't rush her. Thomas Whitmore is not a fool.””

Marcus replied:

“Then what exactly do you want me to do?””

“I want access to the original investment agreements. If those agreements are what I suspect, we can negotiate from a much stronger position.””

Marcus paused.

“And if she finds out?””

“She won't.””

The recording continued.

Then another voice entered.

An older male voice.

Nia's hand flew to her mouth.

Grandpa.

Thomas Whitmore.

“Evelyn, you are making a mistake.””

Nia froze.

The room seemed to disappear around her.

Her grandfather sounded exactly as she remembered.

Calm.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Evelyn replied:

“Thomas, this is a family matter.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“It became a business matter when you started moving assets without authorization.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Sir, I think you're misunderstanding the situation.””

Thomas gave a quiet laugh.

“Marcus, I understand it better than you think.””

Nia leaned closer to the laptop.

Then her grandfather said something that made her eyes fill.

“I know you intend to marry my granddaughter. And I know why.””

Marcus's voice became defensive.

“That's not true.””

“Then tell me what you know about her inheritance.””

Silence.

Evelyn spoke.

“Thomas, you cannot keep treating us like criminals.””

“I treat people according to their actions.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Thomas spoke again.

“Listen carefully. If you marry Nia because you love her, I will welcome you into my family. If you marry her because you believe she can open doors to my business, you will find every door locked.””

The recording crackled.

Marcus said:

“What if she never inherits anything?””

Thomas answered immediately.

“Then she will still be worth more than everything you own.””

Nia began to cry.

Not loudly.

Just silent tears slipping down her face.

Her grandfather had known.

He had known there was something wrong with Marcus.

And yet he had still allowed her to make her own decision.

The recording continued.

Evelyn's voice was cold.

“You can't control what happens after you're gone.””

Thomas replied:

“No. But I can protect what matters.””

A pause.

Then:

“And I have.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nia stared at the laptop screen.

Daniel slowly removed his glasses.

“Your grandfather knew about the proposed marriage arrangement.””

“Why didn't he tell me?”” Nia whispered.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Victoria looked down.

“There's another recording.””

Nia turned.

“What?””

Victoria removed a second USB drive.

“This one was made three days after the first conversation. Thomas requested a private meeting with me.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“He met with you?””

“Yes. He asked me to investigate the property transfers independently.””

Nia felt her pulse quicken.

“Did he say anything about me?””

Victoria nodded.

“He told me that he would never interfere with your choice of husband. But he wanted to make sure nobody could use your marriage to take away your future.””

Daniel inserted the second drive.

The recording began with the faint sound of a door closing.

Thomas's voice followed.

“Victoria, I need you to understand that Nia must never know about this investigation unless absolutely necessary.””

Victoria's recorded voice answered:

“Why not tell her now?””

“Because if I tell her, she may spend the rest of her life wondering whether every kind word from Marcus was genuine.””

Nia covered her mouth.

Thomas continued.

“I won't take that from her unless I have to.””

Victoria asked:

“And if the Bennett family succeeds?””

“Then the trust will activate the protections I've arranged.””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“There's one more thing.””

Daniel leaned closer.

Thomas's voice became quieter.

“If Evelyn attempts to trigger the change-of-control clause, it will expose a transaction that predates the marriage.””

Victoria asked:

“What transaction?””

Thomas answered:

“The original acquisition of the Bennett family properties.””

The recording ended.

Nia looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel was already opening another folder.

“I think I know.””

He pulled out an old corporate chart.

It showed the ownership history of Bennett Development Group.

The company had originally been established decades earlier by two business partners.

One was Evelyn's father.

The other was Nia's grandmother.

Nia stared at the names.

“Wait. My grandmother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandmother, Eleanor Whitmore, was one of the original investors.””

“But Grandpa told me she was a minority shareholder.””

“She was initially. However, the original partnership agreement contained a purchase option that was never fully exercised.””

Nia looked at the documents.

“So what does that mean?””

Daniel pointed to a section of the agreement.

“Some of Bennett Development's foundational properties were originally held through a joint ownership structure. Your grandmother's estate retained certain contractual rights that were never properly extinguished.””

Nia frowned.

“Are you saying we still own part of those properties?””

“Potentially. We need a title review and the original closing documents.””

Victoria leaned forward.

“That's what Evelyn was trying to hide.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Explain.””

Victoria opened her folder.

“Three years ago, Evelyn transferred the properties into EB Strategic Holdings. But before the transfer, she requested a legal opinion concerning the original partnership agreement.””

She pulled out a printed email.

“She was told that the Whitmore estate might still have a valid claim.””

Nia stared at the message.

The date was three years earlier.

A second email followed.

If the Whitmore interest is confirmed, the proposed transfer may be challenged. We should resolve this before the next audit.

The sender was Evelyn.

The recipient was Richard Cole, the same attorney who had prepared Nia's divorce agreement.

Nia looked at Daniel.

“Did Richard know about my inheritance?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It appears so.””

“And he prepared the divorce papers?””

“Yes.””

Nia felt the pieces coming together.

Evelyn had known about the ownership dispute.

She had known about the inheritance.

She had hired the attorney who prepared the divorce agreement.

And she had pushed Nia to sign away every possible financial claim without explaining what those claims might be worth.

“Daniel,” Nia said quietly, “I want the original divorce agreement reviewed immediately.””

“We're already arranging that.””

“Not just the financial clauses. Every communication between Richard Cole and Evelyn.””

“Understood.””

“And I want an independent property attorney to examine the original partnership agreement.””

Daniel nodded.

Victoria closed her folder.

“There is something else you should know.””

Nia turned toward her.

“What?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Marcus knew about the original ownership dispute.””

“How?””

“He asked me to prepare a summary for him.””

Nia felt her stomach tighten again.

“When?””

“Two weeks before your divorce.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Do you have that request?””

Victoria nodded.

She opened her laptop and searched through her emails.

A moment later, she found it.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — WHITMORE OWNERSHIP POSITION.*

Marcus had written:

I need to know whether Nia can legally claim any interest in the Bennett properties if the marriage ends. My mother wants this resolved before the settlement is signed.

Nia stared at the screen.

Then she noticed the attachment.

It was a draft legal analysis.

The final paragraph contained a warning.

The Whitmore estate may retain enforceable rights. Any settlement agreement should not be executed without first determining the beneficiary's status and obtaining appropriate independent legal advice.

Marcus had received that warning.

He had read it.

And he had still brought Nia to his mother's living room and demanded her signature.

Nia slowly closed the laptop.

For several seconds, she looked out at the river.

Then she turned toward Daniel.

“What's the next board meeting?””

“Tomorrow afternoon.””

“Good.””

Daniel studied her.

“What are you planning?””

Nia picked up her grandfather's letter.

“I'm going to ask them one question.””

“Which question?””

She looked directly at him.

“Who owns the properties Evelyn has been hiding?””

That evening, Marcus received a call from his mother.

He was sitting alone in his penthouse office, staring at the financial documents spread across his desk.

“Marcus,” Evelyn said sharply, “we have a problem.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“What now?””

“Victoria has contacted Whitmore.””

Marcus sat upright.

“What?””

“She met with Nia this morning.””

He stood.

“How do you know?””

“Richard told me.””

Marcus paced toward the window.

“Does Nia have the recordings?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

“Mother?””

“I don't know.””

He closed his eyes.

“Did you destroy the original partnership documents?””

“Of course I did.””

“All of them?””

Evelyn's voice changed.

“What are you asking me?””

“Did you destroy every copy?””

A long silence followed.

Then Evelyn said:

“Marcus, listen to me. There is something you need to understand.””

He stopped pacing.

“What?””

“The properties are not the real problem.””

“Then what is?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your grandfather-in-law didn't just leave Nia an inheritance.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“He left her something that could destroy us.””

She paused.

“Because the original partnership agreement gives her family the right to take control of Bennett Development's founding properties.””

Marcus gripped the edge of his desk.

“How many?””

Evelyn whispered:

“All of them.””

And before he could respond, another call appeared on his phone.

The caller ID read:

*RICHARD COLE — FAMILY ATTORNEY.*

Marcus answered.

Richard sounded terrified.

“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully. Nia's legal team has just filed a formal notice.””

“What notice?””

“A claim concerning the original partnership agreement.””

Marcus swallowed.

“And?””

Richard hesitated.

“They're asking the court to preserve every property involved in the original transfer.””

Marcus looked toward his office door.

“Can they do that?””

Richard's answer came quietly.

“They already have.””

Then he added:

“And there's one more thing. Your mother just called me. She says the original agreement is missing.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Because he knew exactly where the only remaining original copy might be.

In a locked safe inside his mother's private office.

And he also knew who had the key.

*Nia.*
