Chapter 8 - The Person Who Stayed After The FuneralThe figure stepped out from the trees.

And my entire body went cold.

Because I knew him.

Not from the video.

Not from the recordings.

From my own life.

From every difficult moment after Claire died.

From every night I thought I was falling apart.

Daniel.

Claire’s older brother.

My wife’s brother.

The man who had hugged me at the funeral.

The man who had told me, “We’re going to get through this together.”

The man who had just spent the last hour warning me about everyone else.

I couldn’t speak.

Neither could Lily.

Daniel stopped a few feet away.

His face was pale.

His hands were raised slightly.

“Ethan.”

I took a step back.

“No.”

His expression changed.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

“Ethan, please.”

I looked at the flash drive still connected to my laptop.

The frozen image of Victor.

The truth Claire had tried to leave behind.

Then I looked at Daniel.

The person who had been helping me uncover everything.

The person who had guided me directly here.

The person standing exactly where Claire had hidden her final evidence.

“How long have you known?”

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

My stomach dropped.

“How long?”

He swallowed.

“Ethan…”

“How long have you known about this?”

His silence became the answer.

Lily moved closer to me.

I could feel her shaking.

Daniel noticed.

And for a moment, his face broke.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“I would never hurt her.”

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I loved my sister.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Daniel flinched.

“Marlene loved her.”

“She did.”

“Victor cared about her.”

“He didn’t.”

“And you loved her.”

“Yes.”

I pointed toward the laptop.

“Then why did everyone lie?”

Daniel had no answer.

The wind moved through the trees.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Lily.

“Lily, can you give me and your dad a minute?”

“No.”

Her answer surprised all of us.

She held onto my arm.

“I’m staying.”

Daniel looked at her sadly.

“You shouldn’t have to hear this.”

She looked at him.

“I already heard worse.”

The words hit him.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

He looked down.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t know Victor was going to hurt her.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew about Victor?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Because Claire told me.”

I felt anger rise.

“She told you?”

“Yes.”

“But not me.”

“She was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“Stop saying that.”

“Ethan—”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps using that excuse.”

I stepped closer.

“You all decided what I could handle.”

Daniel looked at the ground.

“Because Claire was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Then of what?”

He looked up.

“Of what would happen if Victor knew you were involved.”

I looked toward the laptop.

“Who is Victor?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone who worked with Claire’s father.”

That surprised me.

“My father-in-law?”

Daniel nodded.

“He handled investments.”

“And?”

“And after Claire’s father died, Victor helped Marlene manage the estate.”

I remembered the documents.

The money.

The signatures.

“He was stealing from them.”

Daniel nodded.

“Claire figured it out.”

“So Marlene helped him?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“I knew she was involved.”

My jaw tightened.

“You let her stay near Lily.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

That was the first time I saw regret.

Real regret.

“I thought I could control it.”

I stared at him.

“You thought?”

“I was watching.”

“Watching?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I looked at Lily.

“You all keep saying that.”

Daniel’s voice became desperate.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

I didn’t answer.

“I knew Marlene was dangerous.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Claire asked me not to.”

The words stopped me.

“What?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

I tensed.

But he pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I have something.”

He handed it to me.

I didn’t take it immediately.

“What is it?”

“Another message from Claire.”

My heart tightened.

“Why do you have it?”

“Because she gave it to me the night before the accident.”

I looked at him.

“The night before?”

He nodded.

“She came to my house.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew something was wrong.”

I took the paper.

The handwriting was Claire’s.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Daniel watched silently.

The note said:

Daniel,

If Ethan finds out everything too soon, he will go after the truth.

That’s who he is.

He will run toward danger if he thinks it protects us.

But Victor is counting on that.

He wants Ethan angry.

He wants Ethan reckless.

Please keep him safe until I can figure out another way.

I stopped reading.

Because the words felt like Claire was speaking directly to me.

I looked at Daniel.

“She knew.”

He nodded.

“She knew you.”

I looked away.

Because that was exactly what hurt.

Claire knew me.

She knew I would fight.

She knew I would not stop.

And she had still chosen silence.

Not because she didn’t trust me.

Because she trusted me too much.

The note continued.

Daniel,

If something happens to me, Ethan cannot know everything at once.

The truth will destroy him before it saves him.

My eyes burned.

Daniel looked away.

“I hated keeping it from you.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because Claire made me promise.”

I folded the paper.

“What happened the night she died?”

Daniel became very still.

“I don’t know everything.”

“But you know something.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me.”

He looked toward the road.

Then spoke.

“Claire called me.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes before the crash.”

My heart pounded.

“What did she say?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“She said someone was following her.”

“Who?”

“She didn’t know.”

“Did she say Victor?”

“No.”

“Did she say Marlene?”

“No.”

I frowned.

“Then who?”

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer made my blood run cold.

“She said the person following her knew her schedule.”

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone who knew where she would be.

Someone who knew everything.

“Did she tell you where she was going?”

Daniel nodded.

“She said she was going to meet someone.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“It’s the truth.”

I stared at him.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

“Dad.”

I looked at her.

She was staring at the laptop.

“Something changed.”

I turned.

The video had moved.

The frozen frame was gone.

A new section had appeared.

A hidden file.

One I hadn’t seen before.

The filename was:

FOR ETHAN ONLY.

My heart stopped.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

I clicked the file.

The screen went black.

Then Claire appeared again.

But this time, she wasn’t in her car.

She was sitting at our kitchen table.

In our house.

The same kitchen where I had found the documents.

The same place where I had stood hours ago thinking I knew nothing.

Claire looked directly at the camera.

Her eyes were swollen.

Like she had been crying for hours.

“Ethan.”

She took a breath.

“If you’re watching this, then Daniel kept his promise.”

I looked at Daniel.

He lowered his eyes.

Claire continued.

“There is one thing I never told you.”

My heart started pounding.

“Something I was afraid you would never forgive me for.”

The room went silent.

Lily squeezed my hand.

Claire looked down.

Then said:

“The night before my accident…”

A pause.

“I found out who Victor was working for.”

The video flickered.

Then Claire whispered:

“And Ethan…”

Her voice broke.

“It was someone we invited into our home.”

The screen froze.

May you like

Daniel stopped breathing.

And from behind us, somewhere near the road, a car door slammed shut.
