Chapter 7: The Trap Beneath the Truth
The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.
I had barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph under my door.
Not because it scared me.
Because it confirmed something I already knew.
Jason wasn’t reacting anymore.
He was moving.
There was a difference.
A person who reacts makes mistakes.
A person who moves has already planned.
And the most dangerous part?
I still didn’t know how far ahead he was.
I walked downstairs quietly.
Noah was still asleep.
I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table with every piece of information spread out in front of me.
The documents.
The photos.
The messages.
The timeline.
Eight months ago, Jason appeared in Laura’s life.
Eight months ago, questions about Horizon Heights started appearing.
Six months ago, Laura admitted she began planning to leave.
Three days ago, I discovered the transfer documents.
Now Jason was threatening my son.
The math was simple.
This wasn’t a love story that went wrong.
It was a plan.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*Need you at the office. I found something important.*
I grabbed my jacket.
Before leaving, I checked on Noah.
He was asleep, one arm wrapped around his dinosaur.
I stood there for a moment.
Then I whispered:
“I’m going to fix this.””
I didn’t know if I was saying it to him.
Or to myself.
Daniel was waiting when I arrived.
The moment I entered his office, I knew whatever he found was serious.
He had papers everywhere.
Three monitors open.
A folder sitting in the middle of his desk.
“Tell me.””
He pushed the folder toward me.
“Jason wasn’t just planning to get control of Horizon Heights.””
I opened it.
“What else?””
“He was planning to remove you completely.””
I looked at the documents.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel pointed to a section.
“This agreement creates a management structure where the original owner loses operational authority after the transfer.””
I frowned.
“But I’m still listed as an owner.””
“On paper.””
He tapped the page.
“But not in practice.””
I read the details again.
The language was complicated.
Carefully written.
Designed to confuse.
A person could sign it without understanding what they were giving away.
“He wanted me to sign this.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Then he would control your company while making it look like you agreed.””
I felt anger rise.
Not the wild kind.
The focused kind.
“He knew I would never sign if I understood.””
“Exactly.””
“So he needed Laura.””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone you trusted.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Laura had always been my blind spot.
I trusted her more than anyone.
Jason knew that.
He studied her.
He studied me.
Then he built a plan around that trust.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Laura.
*We need to talk. Alone. Please.*
I showed Daniel.
He frowned.
“Be careful.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I looked at him.
He sighed.
“Mark, I’m not saying she’s involved.””
“I know.””
“But she is the reason he got close.””
I nodded.
That was the hardest part.
Laura was both.
A victim.
And the person who opened the door.
I met Laura at a quiet park near the lake.
Somewhere neutral.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere Jason couldn’t easily control the situation.
When she arrived, she looked nervous.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just tired.
“I’m glad you came.””
“I almost didn’t.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
We stood there for a moment.
Two people who had spent twelve years building a life.
Now standing like strangers.
“I found something,” she said.
“What?””
She handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
“Something I copied from Jason’s laptop.””
My expression hardened.
“You had access?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked ashamed.
“Because he trusted me.””
The irony wasn’t lost on either of us.
“He kept saying I was different.””
I said nothing.
“He said Rachel was unstable. That she misunderstood him.””
Laura swallowed.
“He said I was the only person who believed in him.””
I looked away.
The same words.
Different woman.
“What’s on this?””
“I don’t know everything.””
“You copied something without knowing?””
“Yes.””
She looked at the flash drive.
“Because I saw a folder with my name.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Inside were notes.””
“What kind of notes?””
Her eyes filled.
“About me.””
I waited.
“He wrote down things I told him.””
“Like what?””
“My fears.””
She looked down.
“My complaints about our marriage.””
The pieces made sense.
Jason wasn’t just listening.
He was collecting.
“He knew exactly what to say because he knew exactly where I was vulnerable.””
I looked at her.
“Laura.””
She met my eyes.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I hurt you.””
“Yes.””
“I hurt Noah.””
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“But I swear to you…”
She took a breath.
“I never wanted this.””
I believed she meant it.
That didn’t erase anything.
But it mattered.
“Why did you give me this?””
“Because I finally understand.””
She looked at the flash drive.
“He never loved me.””
The words came out broken.
“He loved the version of me he could use.””
For the first time, I saw Laura grieving.
Not because she lost Jason.
Because she realized Jason had never really been there.
That night, Daniel opened the files.
Laura and I sat across from each other in his office.
Neither of us spoke much.
The silence said enough.
The files loaded.
At first, nothing looked unusual.
Emails.
Notes.
Schedules.
Then Daniel stopped.
“What?””
He zoomed in.
“Look at this.””
I leaned closer.
A document.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Relationships.
My stomach turned.
“What is that?””
Daniel scrolled.
“It’s a profile.””
“Of who?””
He looked at me.
“People Jason has targeted.””
The room went quiet.
There were names.
Women.
Business owners.
Investors.
People who had something valuable.
Not always money.
Sometimes access.
Sometimes connections.
Sometimes information.
“This is insane,” Laura whispered.
Daniel continued scrolling.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward us.
A folder.
Created six months before Jason and Laura officially became involved.
The name:
*ANDERSON PROJECT*
My blood ran cold.
“No.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Information about me.
My business.
My family.
My habits.
My schedule.
Even photos of Noah.
Laura covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
I couldn’t move.
For months, I thought Jason entered my life because he met my wife.
The truth was worse.
He entered my wife’s life because he was studying mine.
“He planned this before he met her,” I said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Laura looked at me.
Tears running down her face.
“Mark…”
I ignored the pain in her voice.
Because there was only one question that mattered.
“How long?””
Daniel looked through the files.
Then he found something.
A date.
A date that made everything stop.
“Two years.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel turned the screen.
The first file had been created two years ago.
Before the gym.
Before Laura changed.
Before I ever heard Jason’s name.
“He’s been watching you for two years.””
The room felt silent.
Because suddenly, every strange moment had a new meaning.
Every missed call.
Every question Laura asked.
Every conversation she thought was private.
Jason wasn’t improvising.
He had been waiting.
I left Daniel’s office after midnight.
Laura followed me outside.
“Mark.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“I know you may never forgive me.””
I looked at her.
She looked genuinely broken.
“But please believe one thing.””
“What?””
“I’m going to help you stop him.””
I studied her.
The old me would have wanted to believe her immediately.
The old me would have forgiven too quickly.
But that man was gone.
“I hope you mean that.””
“I do.””
A car passed on the street.
Neither of us moved.
Then Laura whispered:
“There’s something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Jason called me tonight.””
“What did he say?””
She swallowed.
“He knows about the flash drive.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did he say?””
Her voice shook.
“He said…”
She looked at me.
“He said if I helped you, he would make sure Noah knew exactly what his mother did.””
I felt anger explode through me.
Not because of the threat.
Because he was using Noah again.
“He’s trying to scare you.””
“Yes.””
“Will it work?””
Laura looked at me.
“No.””
For a moment, I saw the woman I married.
Not the woman who betrayed me.
The woman who was finally fighting back.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new email.
From an unknown sender.
Subject line:
*Your son deserves the truth.*
I opened it.
There was only one attachment.
A video.
My finger hovered over the screen.
I knew I didn’t want to watch it.
But I also knew I had to.
I pressed play.
The video loaded.
And within three seconds…
I saw Noah.
Sitting in a room I didn’t recognize.
Talking to someone off camera.
My heart stopped.
Because then a familiar voice spoke.
Jason.
“Tell your dad what your mother really did.””
I dropped the phone.
And in that moment, I realized the worst part of Jason’s plan.
He wasn’t trying to destroy my business anymore.
He wasn’t trying to steal my future.
May you like
He was trying to rewrite the story of my family.
And he had just used my son as the main character.
