Chapter 9: The Person Behind It

The door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a black leather portfolio.

She was in her fifties.

Elegant.

Calm.

Almost painfully composed.

Marcus Bell stood behind her.

I had never seen either of them before.

But Victoria's reaction told me everything.

She backed against the wall.

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Victoria.””

Kendra looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

The woman turned toward me.

“Daniel Davis.””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Helena Cross.””

Evelyn's expression changed instantly.

“You.””

Helena smiled.

“You remember me.””

Evelyn's voice hardened.

“I remember what you did.””

Marcus closed the door.

I looked at him.

“What do you want?””

Helena placed her portfolio on the table.

“I want this family to stop pretending.””

“Pretending about what?””

“About who your father was.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Your father was not the victim in this story.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don't.””

Helena ignored her.

“He had secrets.””

“So do you,” I said.

She smiled.

“Indeed.””

Victoria whispered, “Helena, you said you would handle him.””

I turned.

“You've been working together.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Not like this.””

Helena laughed softly.

“Of course not.””

She turned toward me.

“Your wife was useful because she was frightened.””

Victoria's face crumpled.

“She promised me Kendra would be protected.””

“And instead,” Kendra said, “she used me as a reason to hurt Zoria.””

Helena looked at Kendra.

“Your mother did what scared people do.””

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

“She stole.””

“Yes.””

“She forged documents.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped.””

Helena nodded.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the answer stunned me.

I looked at Marcus.

“And you?””

“I moved the money.””

“Why?””

“Because Helena needed it moved.””

“Why did she need twelve million dollars?””

Helena smiled.

“To settle a debt.””

“With whom?””

She looked at Evelyn.

“With your father.””

The room went silent.

My father was dead.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“What debt?””

Helena finally looked at her.

“Your mother knows.””

Evelyn's face changed.

“Our mother?””

“Yes.””

I stared at Evelyn.

“You know what she's talking about?””

“No.””

Helena laughed.

“You've spent half your life believing the wrong story.””

She opened the portfolio.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Adoption papers.

Photographs.

I picked up the first document.

It was my mother's death certificate.

Normal.

Then another.

A medical record.

A diagnosis.

A treatment history.

I looked at Evelyn.

“What am I looking at?””

She stared at the paper.

“I've never seen that.””

Helena placed another document on top.

A paternity test.

Two names.

My father.

And another man.

I looked at the result.

99.98%.

The second man was not my father.

My hands began to shake.

“What is this?””

Helena said quietly,

“Your father wasn't Evelyn's biological father.””

Evelyn went pale.

I looked at my sister.

She whispered, “No.””

Helena nodded.

“He raised her.””

“But then…”

I couldn't finish.

She answered.

“Which means the trust was never legally hers.””

Arthur's face changed.

“That's why the trust structure was revised.””

Helena smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I turned to Arthur.

“You knew?””

“I knew there was a question about Evelyn's parentage.””

“You told me she was my sister.””

“She was raised as your sister.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Arthur lowered his eyes.

Victoria started crying.

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“I found out eight years ago.””

“How?””

“Helena.””

I looked at the woman across the room.

She folded her hands.

“Your father hired me to investigate Evelyn.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered she might not be his biological child.””

Evelyn looked devastated.

“So you were spying on me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because if the trust went to you, your father wanted proof.””

I turned toward my sister.

“Then why did he leave you anything?””

Helena answered.

“Because he loved you both.””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“He didn't care about blood.””

I looked at Helena.

“Then why all the secrecy?””

“Because there was another beneficiary.””

She opened another file.

This time, she placed a single page in front of me.

I read the name.

My heart stopped.

It was Victoria Davis.

I looked at my wife.

“What?””

She shook her head violently.

“No.””

Helena nodded.

“Your father changed the trust after discovering the truth.””

“To Victoria?””

“No.””

She pointed to the clause.

“To any spouse who could prove that she had been financially exploited by the family.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father knew Victoria was being used.””

Victoria began crying.

“By who?””

Helena looked at her.

“By Marcus.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Helena.””

She ignored him.

“Marcus convinced Victoria that he could protect her from Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he knew Victoria was afraid of being left with nothing.””

Helena continued.

“He manipulated her into signing documents.””

Victoria whispered, “You said they were legal.””

“They were.””

“You told me they would protect Kendra.””

“They did.””

“For what?””

Helena's face finally became cold.

“For making sure Daniel divorced you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked away.

Helena said, “Your marriage was supposed to collapse.””

I looked at Victoria.

“You were planning to divorce me?””

“No!””

“You forged my signature.””

“I was trying to survive.””

“You stole money.””

“I was trying to protect Kendra.””

“You sabotaged Zoria.””

“I was trying to keep the family together.””

Helena smiled.

“And all the while, Marcus was building a case that Daniel was financially reckless.””

I understood.

The forged signatures.

The transfers.

The hidden accounts.

The financial records.

He had been manufacturing evidence that I was unstable with money.

So when the marriage collapsed, Victoria would appear to be the victim.

And Marcus would control the settlement.

I looked at him.

“You were going to take everything.””

He said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“You weren't helping my wife.””

“No.””

“You were using her.””

“Yes.””

Victoria covered her mouth.

Kendra stared at Marcus with disgust.

Zoria quietly reached for my hand.

Then Evelyn suddenly picked up the paternity test.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at one line.

The test compared her DNA to my father's.

It showed no biological relationship.

Evelyn looked at me.

“Then why does the trust call me his daughter?””

Helena went completely still.

Arthur looked at the document.

Then at Evelyn.

“I've never seen this version.””

I turned to him.

“What do you mean?””

Arthur took the paper.

He read it.

His hands began shaking.

“This document has been altered.””

Helena's face changed.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Arthur pulled it away.

“It has been altered.””

“What does that mean?”” I demanded.

Arthur looked at me.

“The original paternity record must be somewhere in your father's archive.””

I felt a chill.

“Where?””

Arthur didn't answer.

Then the front window shattered.

Glass exploded across the room.

Everyone screamed.

Marcus ducked.

Evelyn pulled Zoria to the floor.

I grabbed Kendra.

Another object hit the wall.

A brick.

Taped to it was a note.

I tore it free.

One sentence was written in black ink.

YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE WRONG BROTHER.

I stared at the words.

There was one final line underneath.

ASK EVELYN WHO HER REAL FATHER IS.

I turned toward my sister.

She was staring at the note.

May you like

Then she whispered,

“I think I know.””
