Chapter 7: The Woman Who Planned Everything

The hardest thing about discovering the truth is realizing how much you missed.

Looking back, every strange moment suddenly made sense.

Every question.

Every coincidence.

Every time Claire seemed to know something she shouldn’t.

I sat in my office with my mother and father, reading through the documents.

Claire had researched my grandfather.

She knew about the trust.

She knew about the property.

She knew exactly how much money existed.

But one question remained.

“How did she find out?””

My father looked down.

“I told her.””

My mother stared at him.

“You told her?””

“I didn’t know what I was telling her.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“She asked questions about my finances. About our future. About whether there was anything valuable in our family.””

“And you answered?””

“Yes.””

My mother closed her eyes.

Daniel looked destroyed.

“I thought she was interested in building a life with me.””

I looked at the papers.

“She was building a life.””

My father looked up.

“Just not with you.””

Exactly.

The next step was finding out what else Claire had done.

My father contacted a private investigator.

At first, I hated the idea.

It felt like we were dragging ourselves back into the nightmare.

But then I remembered something.

The truth had been hidden from us for twelve years.

We deserved to know all of it.

Three days later, the investigator arrived.

His name was Marcus.

He placed a thick file on the table.

“I found something.””

Everyone became quiet.

Marcus opened the file.

“Claire had done this before.””

My mother frowned.

“Before Daniel?””

“Yes.””

He showed us records.

Different cities.

Different names.

Different wealthy men.

My stomach turned.

“She targeted people?””

Marcus nodded.

“She built relationships, gained trust, then moved on.””

My father stared at the papers.

“I was just another person.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My father knew.

That night, I found him sitting alone.

“You okay?””

He looked up.

“I’m embarrassed.””

I sat across from him.

“Why?””

“Because everyone saw it except me.””

I thought about that.

“Not everyone.””

He looked at me.

“My mother didn’t see it either.””

He was quiet.

“She trusted you.””

That hurt him more than anything.

Because Claire had tricked him.

But my mother had loved him.

And he betrayed that love himself.

“I destroyed the best thing I ever had,” he whispered.

I didn’t know what to say.

So I said the truth.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

That was new.

A week later, we received another surprise.

A package arrived at the house.

No return address.

Inside was an old photograph.

My mother picked it up.

Then froze.

“What is it?””

She turned the picture around.

It showed my grandfather.

Standing beside another man.

A man I didn’t recognize.

On the back was a message.

“Ask Daniel who this is.””

Everyone looked at my father.

His face changed.

“Dad?””

I asked.

“Do you know him?””

He slowly sat down.

“Yes.””

My mother looked shocked.

“Who?””

My father stared at the photograph.

“That’s Robert.””

“Who is Robert?””

He took a deep breath.

“He was your grandfather’s business partner.””

I frowned.

“What does he have to do with Claire?””

My father looked at me.

“Everything.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

He looked terrified.

“Because Claire wasn’t working alone.””

I felt a chill.

My mother stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“I never told you this because I thought it was impossible.””

“What?””

He looked at the photograph again.

“Robert disappeared after your grandfather died.””

I waited.

Then he said:

“But before he disappeared, he promised he would find a way to take control of everything your grandfather left behind.””

My heart raced.

“Are you saying Claire was working with him?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because the fear in his eyes told me everything.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Emma.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice replied:

“You don’t know me.””

A pause.

“But I know your family.””

Then she said:

May you like

“Your father is not the only person who betrayed you.””

And the call ended.
