Chapter 4: The Woman Holding the Keys

Lisa stood at the top of the stairs with a ring of house keys wrapped around her fingers.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

Neither was I.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the television announcer talking about a baseball game nobody was watching.

Then Lisa slowly descended the stairs.

"Michael," she said.

I held up the document.

"What is this?""

She stopped.

Her eyes dropped to the paper.

Then to Dad.

Then to Damon.

"Where did you get that?""

I almost laughed.

"That's your first question?""

Lisa's face tightened.

"Michael, this isn't what you think.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

She took another step.

Dad's voice came from behind me.

"Lisa, you shouldn't have come.""

She looked at him.

"I had to.""

"Why?""

She glanced at me.

"Because he knows.""

I felt something cold move through my stomach.

"Knows what?""

Lisa looked at Damon.

He shook his head.

"Don't look at me," he said.

"You promised me you wouldn't say anything.""

Damon stood.

"I didn't promise you forever.""

Lisa's expression hardened.

"You stupid boy.""

I stepped between them.

"Don't talk to him like that.""

She looked at me.

"Michael, you don't understand what's happening.""

"I understand that my father says he never signed this transfer.""

Lisa's eyes flickered.

"Did he?""

Dad answered.

"No.""

She looked at him.

"You signed papers.""

"Not that.""

"You don't remember.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"I remember my own signature.""

I held the document up.

"So explain it.""

Lisa walked toward the coffee table.

"May I see it?""

"No.""

"Michael—"

"No.""

She stopped.

"You've always been dramatic.""

"And you've always been good at changing the subject.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"That's unfair.""

"Is it?""

I pointed toward Dad.

"He asked Damon for water today. Damon poured it on him.""

Lisa's expression barely changed.

"What does that have to do with this?""

I stared at her.

"Everything.""

Damon suddenly spoke.

"She told me Grandpa was going to lose the house.""

Lisa turned sharply.

"Shut up.""

I looked at Damon.

"What did she tell you?""

"That Dad couldn't afford to keep it.""

Dad's face tightened.

"Don't call me Dad.""

Damon swallowed.

"Sorry.""

Lisa took another step.

"Michael, your father has been struggling financially for years.""

"He has.""

"And the house costs money.""

"I know.""

"Taxes. Repairs. Insurance.""

"I know.""

"Then you know why I tried to help.""

I looked at the keys in her hand.

"By transferring his house?""

"I didn't transfer anything.""

I held up the paper.

"This says you did.""

"It says Damon's name is on it.""

"Exactly.""

Lisa looked at Damon.

"You signed something.""

He shook his head.

"I didn't.""

"You knew what you were signing.""

"No.""

Her face changed.

I noticed.

Just for a second.

Fear.

Then she recovered.

"You've been manipulated.""

Damon laughed bitterly.

"By who?""

"By your grandfather.""

Dad stared at her.

"Why would I manipulate him?""

"Because you don't want to admit you're losing control.""

The room went silent.

Dad's face fell.

I stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Lisa folded her arms.

"I'm trying to protect this family.""

"Then why does Dad's bank account have withdrawals he doesn't recognize?""

She didn't answer.

"Why did you take six thousand dollars?""

"I borrowed it.""

"Did you ask?""

"I intended to pay it back.""

"When?""

"I don't know.""

"So you stole it.""

Her eyes flashed.

"I did not steal from my father.""

Dad looked at her.

"Then what do you call taking money from my account without telling me?""

Lisa's lips parted.

No answer.

Damon looked at me.

"I told you.""

I turned.

"What else?""

"There's a safe.""

Lisa's head snapped toward him.

"Damon.""

"There's a safe in Grandpa's room.""

Dad's eyes widened.

"What safe?""

Damon pointed upstairs.

"Behind the dresser.""

Lisa moved immediately.

I caught her wrist.

She froze.

"Let go.""

"No.""

"Michael.""

"What were you going to do?""

"I wasn't going anywhere.""

"You just started walking toward the room he mentioned.""

She pulled her arm free.

"Because this is absurd.""

I looked at Dad.

"Did you know about a safe?""

Dad shook his head.

"No.""

Damon stared at the floor.

"I found it when I was looking for the paperwork.""

I looked at him.

"You were searching his room?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He hesitated.

Lisa answered for him.

"Because I asked him to.""

My stomach dropped.

"You asked him to search Dad's room?""

"He was supposed to find documents.""

"What documents?""

"Insurance papers.""

"You have no business touching his documents.""

Lisa's voice rose.

"I was trying to save him!""

"From what?""

"From himself!""

Dad suddenly slammed his palm against the wheelchair arm.

"Stop!""

Everyone went quiet.

He breathed heavily.

His gray beard trembled.

"I have listened to all of you talk about me like I'm not sitting here.""

He looked at Lisa.

"You took my money.""

Lisa looked down.

"You lied to me.""

Then he looked at Damon.

"You stole from me.""

Damon's eyes filled.

"And now both of you are standing in my house arguing about who gets to decide what happens to it.""

Nobody spoke.

Dad wiped his eyes.

"I fought for this country.""

His voice cracked.

"I worked forty years.""

He looked around the living room.

"I raised two children.""

His eyes settled on Lisa.

"And somehow, this is what we became.""

Lisa's face crumpled.

"Dad...""

"No.""

He raised a hand.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

Dad looked at me.

"Michael, there's something you need to know.""

I moved closer.

"What?""

"That document isn't the only one.""

Lisa suddenly stepped forward.

"Dad, please.""

He looked at her.

"You've had enough chances.""

She shook her head.

"If you tell him, everything falls apart.""

"Maybe it should.""

I turned toward Lisa.

"What falls apart?""

She didn't answer.

Dad pointed toward the hallway.

"There's a box in my closet.""

Lisa closed her eyes.

"Behind the winter coats.""

I walked toward the hallway.

"Michael," Lisa said.

I stopped.

"If you open that box, you won't be able to put this family back together.""

I looked at her.

"Maybe it shouldn't be put back together.""

Then I went upstairs.

Dad's bedroom smelled faintly of cedar and aftershave.

His room was exactly as I'd known it for years.

A framed photograph of Mom.

His old medals.

A Bible on the nightstand.

A stack of unopened mail.

I moved to the closet.

Behind the winter coats was a cardboard box.

I pulled it down.

It was heavier than I expected.

I carried it to the bed.

Downstairs, voices rose.

I couldn't make out the words.

I opened the box.

Inside were bank statements.

Property records.

Old military papers.

And a small digital recorder.

I picked it up.

There was a single piece of masking tape across it.

In Dad's handwriting were three words:

*PLAY THIS FIRST.*

My hands went cold.

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Dad's voice came through the tiny speaker.

"If you're hearing this, Michael, something has happened to me.""

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

"I made this because I no longer trust my memory, and I no longer trust the people around me.""

I stared at the recorder.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Lisa.

My sister.

Clear as day.

"Sign it, Dad.""

The recording crackled.

Dad answered.

"What am I signing?""

Lisa said something I couldn't hear.

I increased the volume.

Then her voice came through again.

"It's just permission for me to handle the house.""

My blood ran cold.

The recording stopped.

I stared at the device.

Then it clicked back on.

A different conversation.

Damon's voice.

"Mom, he won't sign anything.""

Lisa answered.

"Then we'll make sure he does.""

I dropped the recorder onto the bed.

My hands were shaking.

There was one more recording.

I pressed play.

This time, Dad's voice sounded frightened.

"I know what you're doing.""

Lisa whispered, "Then you know what happens if you tell Michael.""

The recording ended.

I stood frozen.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Lisa was standing in the doorway.

Her face was wet with tears.

"Michael.""

I stared at her.

"You threatened Dad.""

She shook her head.

"I was trying to scare him.""

"You threatened him.""

"I didn't mean it.""

"You told him he'd lose everything.""

"I was desperate.""

"For what?""

She stepped inside.

"I needed the house.""

"Why?""

She looked toward the box.

"You found it.""

"Why do you need this house?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, "Because I already lost mine.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

"And the person I owe money to knows exactly where Dad lives.""

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice said, "Michael Carter?""

"Who is this?""

"You found the documents.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who are you?""

The man chuckled softly.

"Ask your sister.""

I looked at Lisa.

She had gone completely pale.

The voice continued.

"Tell her the deadline is tomorrow.""

Then the call ended.

I lowered the phone.

Lisa stared at me.

"What did he say?""

I took one step toward her.

"Tomorrow for what?""

She didn't answer.

"Lisa.""

May you like

Her lips trembled.

"Tomorrow," she whispered, "he comes for the house.""
