Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Door

Marcus read the message three times.

The photograph showed him standing in his own hallway, his fingers inches from the handle of his bedroom door. The angle was unmistakable. Whoever had taken it had been standing inside the room, close enough to capture the tension in his shoulders and the expression on his face.

Beneath it, the sentence remained on his screen.

If you open that door, you'll finally learn what your wife has been hiding from you.

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't hear anything except his own heartbeat.

Then another message appeared.

*Unknown Number:* Don't let her convince you that this is what it looks like.

Marcus stared at the words.

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“What the hell does that mean?”” he muttered.

Behind the door, something scraped against the floor.

“Marcus?”” Vanessa called.

He raised his eyes.

“Who sent me this photograph?””

Silence.

“Vanessa, I asked you a question.””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

He turned his phone toward the door, as though she could see the screen through the wood.

“Someone just sent me a picture of myself standing here. Taken from inside our bedroom.””

He heard a quick intake of breath.

Then she said, “You need to leave.””

Marcus blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“Please, Marcus. Just go downstairs.””

“There's a man in our bedroom, and you're telling me to leave?””

“No one said there's a man in here.””

“I heard him!””

His voice struck the walls and came back at him.

For a moment, there was no sound from inside the room.

Then a man's voice spoke.

“Vanessa, tell him.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

The voice was low, calm, and disturbingly familiar.

He had heard it before. At the house. In the garden. During conversations about the hedges, the sprinkler system, and the uneven stone path beside the garage.

Ryan.

Marcus stepped away from the door.

“Ryan?””

No one answered.

He looked down at the phone again, his thumb hovering over the unknown number.

He typed a message.

*Marcus:* Who are you?

The reply came almost immediately.

*Unknown Number:* Someone who knows why Ryan is in your bedroom.

Marcus's mouth went dry.

He typed again.

*Marcus:* Then tell me.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Finally, the response arrived.

*Unknown Number:* Ask your wife what happened to the money from the account you closed last month.

Marcus stared at the message.

The account.

He hadn't thought about it in weeks.

It had been a joint savings account he and Vanessa had opened seven years earlier. They had deposited money into it whenever business was good, intending to use it for a larger home someday. The balance had reached nearly sixty thousand dollars before Marcus noticed several unexplained withdrawals.

Vanessa had told him she'd transferred the money into a higher-interest account.

He'd believed her.

He had asked her to send him the new account details, but she'd said the bank was still processing the paperwork.

Then the subject had quietly disappeared.

Marcus looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“Vanessa,” he said slowly.

“Where is our savings?””

Nothing.

“Where did you put the money?””

Her answer came in a whisper.

“Marcus, this isn't the time.””

He felt something inside him shift.

Not break.

Not yet.

But shift, as if a piece of his life had been resting on an unstable foundation for years and someone had finally pushed against it.

“You told me you transferred it.””

“I did.””

“To where?””

“It's complicated.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't do this right now!””

Marcus recoiled at the sudden sharpness of her voice.

For eleven years, they had argued about bills, family obligations, vacations, and whether they should have children. They had shouted at each other before. They had slammed doors and gone to bed angry.

But Vanessa had never spoken to him like he was an obstacle standing between her and something she needed.

He looked down at the phone.

Another message appeared.

*Unknown Number:* Check the name on the transfer.

Marcus opened his banking application.

His hands were unsteady as he navigated to the transaction history. He found the withdrawals from the savings account, then opened the largest transfer.

The money had gone to an account he didn't recognize.

The recipient's name was listed beneath it.

*Ryan Carter.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

Sixty thousand dollars had not disappeared into a better savings account.

His wife had transferred it to their gardener.

He lifted his head toward the door.

“Vanessa, did you send our savings to Ryan?””

Silence.

“Did you?””

A soft sob came from inside.

Marcus closed his eyes.

He wanted her to deny it. He wanted to hear that the account had been compromised, that the bank had made a mistake, that there was some reasonable explanation he hadn't considered.

Instead, he heard Ryan say, “You should have told him.””

Vanessa answered sharply.

“Don't you dare put this on me.””

Marcus felt the blood rush to his face.

“So you admit it?””

The bedroom handle rattled.

“Marcus, please listen to me.””

“Unlock the door.””

“Just listen!””

“UNLOCK THE DOOR!””

His shout startled even him.

A moment later, the lock clicked.

The handle turned slightly, but the door opened only a few inches before stopping against something behind it.

Marcus leaned forward.

Through the narrow gap, he could see a portion of the bedroom: the edge of the dresser, a fallen pillow, and Vanessa's cream blouse.

Her face appeared in the opening.

Her curls were disheveled, and her eyes were wet. She held the door with one hand and kept her other arm pressed against her side.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

He looked at her, then past her shoulder.

“Move.””

“Please.””

“Move, Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“There's something you don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

Her lips parted, but no words came.

Behind her, a shadow crossed the wall.

Marcus pushed the door.

Vanessa stumbled backward, and the door opened far enough for him to see Ryan standing beside the bed.

Ryan's olive work polo was still tucked into his tan trousers. His face was pale, and his hands hung at his sides.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Marcus looked from Ryan to Vanessa.

Then he noticed the document spread across the bed.

A bank statement.

A printed photograph.

And a manila folder bearing Marcus's full legal name.

“What is all this?”” Marcus asked.

Neither of them answered.

He stepped into the room.

Ryan moved instinctively toward the folder.

Marcus caught the movement.

“Don't touch that.””

Ryan stopped.

Marcus walked to the bed and picked up the top sheet.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

The second document was a photograph of Marcus standing outside a building he recognized immediately: his father's old property, a modest house on the outskirts of Atlanta that Marcus had inherited three years earlier.

The third document carried a heading that made his stomach tighten.

*PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*

His name appeared beneath it.

So did a signature.

Marcus stared at the signature for several seconds.

It looked like his handwriting.

But he had never signed that document.

He lifted his eyes toward Vanessa.

“Tell me what I'm looking at.””

Vanessa began to cry.

Ryan took a step forward.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You stole my money, came into my house, and now you're standing beside a document with my name on it. What exactly can you explain?””

Ryan swallowed.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Then why does the bank say you received sixty thousand dollars?””

“Because Vanessa sent it.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

She lowered her head.

“And why is there a property transfer agreement with my signature?””

Ryan glanced at Vanessa.

It was a small movement, but Marcus saw it.

The two of them were communicating without words.

They had been doing it long before this morning.

Marcus placed the papers on the bed.

“Which one of you is going to tell me the truth first?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Marcus, the money was supposed to protect us.””

“Protect us from what?””

She looked up at him.

For the first time since he had returned home, she seemed more frightened than guilty.

Then she whispered four words that changed the meaning of everything in the room.

“Your father wasn't bankrupt.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward Ryan.

Ryan's expression hardened.

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“Your father left something behind, Marcus. Something you were never supposed to find.””
