Chapter 2: The Bill Nobody Expected

Margaret Whitmore had spent most of her adult life believing that money was something other people worried about.

She didn't check restaurant prices.

She didn't compare hotel rates.

She didn't ask whether a designer handbag was worth its price.

If she wanted something, she simply told Daniel's father, Richard, to arrange it.

And if Richard hesitated, she reminded him that the Whitmore family had a reputation to maintain.

For years, that reputation had been quietly supported by me.

But Margaret didn't know that.

She believed Daniel's success came from his family's connections. She believed their expensive lifestyle was the natural result of decades of business achievements.

She had never bothered to ask who was actually paying the bills.

Now she sat beneath the chandeliers, staring at a leather folder as if it contained a death sentence.

Thomas stood patiently beside her.

"Would you please explain what you mean?"" Margaret demanded.

"Certainly, ma'am. The original booking was secured through Ms. Nia Carter's corporate account. The payment authorization covered the dining room, catering, entertainment, floral arrangements, and additional services.""

"Yes, I know that.""

"However, the authorization was withdrawn before the final settlement.""

Margaret's face reddened.

"That's impossible. Everything was already arranged.""

"Yes, ma'am. The services were arranged. The final payment was not completed.""

Daniel pushed his chair backward.

"Wait. You're telling me we have to pay for this ourselves?""

Thomas maintained his composure.

"I'm telling you the person who guaranteed the payment is no longer responsible for it.""

Margaret slapped her palm against the table.

"Get me the manager.""

"I'm the event manager, Mrs. Whitmore.""

"Then get me someone above you.""

Thomas nodded politely.

"Of course. But before I do, I should explain that the restaurant has already received a formal notification from the account holder.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What notification?""

Thomas turned the folder around.

"The cancellation of all remaining authorizations associated with tonight's event.""

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"Call your wife.""

Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.

He called me.

It rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Voicemail.

He tried again.

Voicemail.

"She's not answering.""

Margaret grabbed her own phone.

"Then call her from mine.""

Daniel did.

Nothing.

His mother leaned forward.

"Send her a message. Tell her this is unacceptable.""

Daniel typed furiously.

*Daniel:* Nia, come back immediately. You're making a fool of everyone.

He waited.

No response.

He sent another.

*Daniel:* Whatever you think happened, we can discuss it later. Just fix the payment.

That message delivered.

But I didn't reply.

Across the table, Richard finally closed his eyes.

"Margaret, perhaps we should listen to what the waiter is saying.""

She turned on him.

"Don't start, Richard.""

"I'm simply asking what the amount is.""

Thomas opened the folder.

"The outstanding amount for the private dining room and catering is $31,400.""

Daniel went pale.

"Thirty-one thousand?""

"Yes, sir.""

"And the flowers?""

"Six thousand two hundred.""

"The musicians?""

"Four thousand eight hundred.""

Daniel stared at the paper.

"That's more than forty thousand dollars.""

"Correct.""

Margaret shook her head.

"No. Nia already paid the deposit.""

"Yes, ma'am. The deposit is recorded. The remaining balance is still outstanding.""

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"How did this happen?""

Margaret's voice rose.

"Because your daughter-in-law has decided to throw a tantrum!""

Thomas remained still.

"Mrs. Whitmore, with respect, the booking agreement clearly identifies Ms. Carter as the sole financial guarantor.""

"Then change it.""

"I'm afraid I cannot do that without authorization from the new responsible party.""

Margaret looked at her son.

"Daniel?""

He swallowed.

"Put it on my card.""

Thomas nodded.

"Certainly, sir.""

Daniel handed over his black credit card.

Thomas walked toward the payment terminal near the entrance.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Margaret picked up her champagne glass.

"Honestly, this is ridiculous. Nia has always been dramatic. She probably thinks walking out makes her look important.""

Richard didn't respond.

"She's been waiting for an opportunity to humiliate us," Margaret continued.

"She knows how important tonight is to your father.""

Daniel stared at the empty chair beside him.

"She shouldn't have done this.""

His cousin, Lauren, finally spoke.

"Daniel?""

"What?""

"Didn't Nia pay for the entire anniversary party last year too?""

Margaret turned.

"That's none of your business.""

Lauren lowered her voice.

"I was just asking.""

"Well, don't.""

At that moment, Thomas returned.

He placed the credit card beside Daniel's plate.

"I'm sorry, sir. The transaction was declined.""

Daniel stared at him.

"What?""

"The available credit is insufficient for the outstanding amount.""

"Try it again.""

"I already attempted it twice.""

Daniel snatched the card.

"That's impossible.""

Margaret's face changed.

"Daniel, what do you mean?""

He ignored her and opened his banking application.

His fingers moved rapidly.

Then stopped.

His checking account balance was lower than he expected.

His credit card limit had been reduced.

He opened another account.

A payment notification appeared.

*AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SUSPENDED.*

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"Mom," he whispered.

"What?""

"I need to make a call.""

He stood and walked toward the corridor.

Margaret followed him.

"What is going on?""

"Not here.""

"Daniel!""

He stopped near the entrance to the dining room.

"I don't have enough available credit.""

Margaret stared.

"Then use your business account.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

He looked around to make sure nobody was listening.

"Because Nia handles the business account.""

Margaret's mouth fell open.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Since when?""

"Since the company expanded.""

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Mom, she's the one who manages our operating funds.""

Margaret's expression hardened.

"She is your wife. You should be managing those funds.""

"I know.""

"Then do something.""

He looked at her.

"What do you want me to do? She's the one with the authorization.""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Tell her to restore it.""

"I've been calling.""

"Then keep calling!""

Daniel returned to the table.

Thomas waited beside him.

"Sir, I must inform you that the restaurant requires settlement before the end of the evening.""

Daniel looked at the leather folder.

"Can you give us until tomorrow?""

"I'm afraid the agreement requires payment tonight.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"Do you know who we are?""

Thomas looked at her calmly.

"Yes, ma'am. You're the Whitmore family.""

"Then perhaps you should remember that.""

"I do, Mrs. Whitmore. That's why I have tried to handle this discreetly.""

Her cheeks burned.

Richard stood.

"How much can we put down now?""

"Twenty thousand dollars would cover the immediate settlement requirement. The remaining amount would need to be secured with an approved payment arrangement.""

Margaret looked at her husband.

"Richard, do something.""

He pulled out his wallet.

Daniel looked at him.

"Are you sure?""

Richard nodded.

"I don't want the staff caught in the middle of this.""

He handed Thomas his card.

The transaction went through for twelve thousand dollars.

Then another attempt for eight thousand failed.

Richard stared at the terminal.

"That's strange.""

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"What?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Some of my available funds are restricted.""

Daniel looked up sharply.

"Restricted by whom?""

Richard didn't answer.

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

"Richard?""

He took a long breath.

"We need to talk about the business.""

"Not now.""

"Actually, Margaret, I think now is exactly when we need to talk about it.""

Before she could respond, Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Not from me.

From the company's finance director.

*Finance Director:* Daniel, I need you to call me immediately. The board has received a notice concerning the executive expense accounts.

Daniel opened the message.

A second message followed.

*Finance Director:* Your access has been suspended pending review.

His face lost all color.

Margaret noticed.

"What now?""

Daniel looked at her.

Then at Richard.

Then at the outstanding bill.

For the first time in his life, he seemed to understand that the evening had become much bigger than an argument between his wife and his mother.

He stepped away from the table and called the finance director.

The call connected.

"Daniel," the man said immediately, "where are you?""

"At my father's anniversary dinner. What's happening?""

"Your wife's office submitted a formal notice this afternoon.""

Daniel froze.

"What office?""

"The office of the majority shareholder.""

There was a long silence.

Daniel gripped the phone.

"You're talking about Nia?""

"Yes.""

"Why would she submit anything?""

The finance director hesitated.

"Daniel, are you unaware of what she owns?""

Before Daniel could answer, the call ended.

He stared at his screen.

Then he slowly turned toward the empty chair where I had been sitting.

Margaret followed his gaze.

"Daniel?""

He didn't answer.

Because suddenly, he remembered something I had told him three months earlier.

Something he had laughed at.

Something about separating personal finances from business finances.

And something about never signing documents he didn't understand.

His phone vibrated again.

This time, it was an email.

The subject line read:
