Chapter 4: The Woman on His Payroll
I stared at the photograph until the screen dimmed.
The woman standing beside Daniel was wearing a cream-colored coat, her blonde hair falling over one shoulder. His hand rested comfortably against her waist.
They weren't standing like colleagues.
They weren't standing like strangers.
They looked like two people who had spent enough time together to forget that anyone might be watching.
I enlarged the photograph.
Then I noticed the date.
October 12.
Our wedding anniversary was October 15.
Three days before Daniel had taken me to dinner, kissed my forehead, and promised that the next year would be the best one of our marriage.
My stomach tightened.
"Evelyn?""
She looked up from her tablet.
"Yes, Ms. Carter?""
"Find out who took this photograph.""
"I'll try.""
"And I want the employment records for the woman standing beside my husband.""
Evelyn glanced at the screen.
"Do you recognize her?""
I shook my head.
"Not personally. But I recognize her name.""
I opened the company's payroll database.
The photograph had been sent without a name, but the employee directory showed only one blonde woman with Daniel's department and job title.
*Vanessa Cole.*
Executive Relations Coordinator.
Hired fourteen months earlier.
Salary: $112,000.
I scrolled through her employment history.
No previous executive experience.
No relevant qualifications.
No professional references from the hospitality or investment industries.
Yet Daniel had personally approved her appointment.
"That's interesting," Evelyn said.
I looked at the screen.
"What?""
"Her position was created specifically for her.""
"By whom?""
"Mr. Whitmore.""
I leaned back.
"Of course.""
Evelyn continued scrolling.
"There's something else. Her compensation was increased twice within six months. She also received a company apartment allowance.""
"How much?""
"Five thousand dollars per month.""
I stared at her.
"That's more than some of our regional directors receive.""
Evelyn nodded.
"I noticed that too.""
I opened the photograph again.
The woman was smiling at Daniel.
He was looking at her with an expression I hadn't seen in years.
I remembered our last anniversary.
He had arrived home late, carrying a small bouquet from a convenience store. He said he had forgotten to order flowers.
I had laughed and told him it didn't matter.
Now I wondered whether he had been with Vanessa when he forgot.
"Ms. Carter?""
Evelyn's voice brought me back.
"Yes?""
"Would you like me to contact legal?""
"Not yet. First, preserve every relevant document. Payroll records, expense approvals, travel arrangements, accommodation payments. Everything.""
"Understood.""
"And don't alert Daniel.""
Evelyn nodded.
I stood and walked to the window.
For years, I had believed the worst thing Margaret could do was make me feel unwelcome.
I had been wrong.
The woman had been using my company as a private bank, while her son apparently used its payroll to support a secret relationship.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Sophie.
*Sophie:* I'm downstairs. Are you still working?
I replied.
*Nia:* Come up.
Five minutes later, Sophie entered my office carrying two coffees and a paper bag.
She stopped when she saw my face.
"Oh, Nia.""
I sat down.
She placed the coffees on the desk.
"Tell me everything.""
I showed her the photograph.
She stared at it.
Then she looked at me.
"Is that Daniel?""
"Yes.""
"Who's the woman?""
"Vanessa Cole. She works for our company.""
Sophie slowly lowered the photograph.
"How long?""
"I don't know.""
"And he paid her salary?""
"Apparently.""
Sophie pulled out a chair.
"Do you want me to say what I'm thinking?""
"No.""
"I'm going to say it anyway.""
She leaned forward.
"That man has been stealing from you while cheating on you.""
I looked down at my hands.
The words sounded uglier when someone else said them.
"I don't know that he's cheating.""
Sophie stared at me.
"Really?""
I picked up my coffee.
"There's a possibility the photograph is misleading.""
"Then let's investigate. But don't protect him before you even know what happened.""
I didn't answer.
She reached across the desk and touched my hand.
"Nia, you built that company. You built your life. You don't have to keep shrinking yourself to make his family comfortable.""
I swallowed.
"I know.""
"Do you?""
The question stayed between us.
Before I could answer, Evelyn knocked.
"Ms. Carter, there's someone downstairs asking to see you.""
"Who?""
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
Sophie closed her eyes.
"You're kidding.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Did she make an appointment?""
"No. She told security she was family.""
I almost laughed.
Family.
The same woman who had told me to eat in the bathroom now wanted access to my office.
"Tell her I'm unavailable.""
Evelyn nodded.
But before she could leave, my office phone rang.
Reception.
"Ms. Carter, I'm sorry to interrupt. Mrs. Whitmore is refusing to leave.""
I sighed.
"What's she saying?""
A pause.
Then the receptionist replied.
"She says she knows you are in the building, and she intends to speak to you about her son's money.""
Sophie looked at me.
"Let her come up.""
I raised an eyebrow.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
I pressed the intercom.
"Send her up.""
Ten minutes later, Margaret entered my office.
She wore the same emerald-green dress from dinner.
Her silver hair was perfectly styled, but her face was flushed.
She didn't greet me.
She didn't greet Sophie.
She walked straight toward my desk.
"What have you done to my son?""
I closed the folder in front of me.
"Good evening, Margaret.""
"Don't use that tone with me.""
"What tone would you prefer?""
She placed both hands on my desk.
"Daniel's accounts have been restricted. His company access has been suspended. The restaurant is threatening to pursue payment. Do you understand what you're doing to this family?""
I looked at her.
"Your son approved unauthorized transfers from my company.""
Margaret laughed.
"Your company?""
"Yes.""
"Daniel built that business with you.""
"Daniel was given an executive position. He wasn't given ownership.""
Her jaw tightened.
"That's not how he described it.""
"Then perhaps you should ask him why he described it incorrectly.""
She stepped closer.
"You're his wife. What's yours belongs to him.""
Sophie let out a short laugh.
Margaret turned.
"Excuse me?""
Sophie leaned back.
"Nothing. I just find that statement interesting coming from someone who spent the evening humiliating the person paying her bills.""
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
"This is a private family matter.""
"Then perhaps you shouldn't have brought it into a corporate office.""
I raised a hand slightly.
"Sophie.""
She stopped.
I looked at Margaret.
"Why did you come here?""
Margaret hesitated.
Then she pulled a folded document from her handbag.
"Daniel needs his access restored. This is a temporary authorization. Sign it, and we'll resolve everything privately.""
I glanced at the paper.
It was a request to reinstate Daniel's executive financial privileges.
It also included authority to approve payments up to $2 million without additional board review.
I looked up.
"Who prepared this?""
"Daniel's attorney.""
I read the document again.
"Does Daniel know you're asking me to sign this?""
"Of course.""
"Does he know about the $750,000 transfer to your consulting company?""
Margaret's face went still.
For the first time since entering my office, she had nothing to say.
I folded the document.
"That's what I thought.""
She reached across the desk.
"Listen to me, Nia. You have no idea what you're interfering with.""
I slowly removed her hand from my paperwork.
"Then explain it.""
Margaret stared at me.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Daniel made that transfer because he was protecting the family.""
"From what?""
She looked toward the office door.
Then back at me.
"Your grandmother left you something you don't understand.""
My fingers tightened around the document.
"What did you just say?""
Margaret's expression changed.
She seemed to realize she had revealed more than she intended.
Then she straightened.
"Ask Daniel.""
She turned toward the door.
"Margaret.""
She stopped.
"Why did you mention my grandmother?""
She didn't turn around.
"Because she wasn't the woman you think she was.""
Then she walked out.
Sophie waited until the door closed.
"What was that?""
I stared at the empty doorway.
"I don't know.""
Evelyn entered moments later.
"Ms. Carter, there's another development.""
"What now?""
She placed a document on my desk.
"Mr. Whitmore has requested an emergency meeting with the board.""
I read the first paragraph.
Then I reached the final page.
The meeting wasn't about Daniel's suspension.
May you like
It was about my authority as majority shareholder.
And the person who had submitted the challenge was Margaret Whitmore.
