Chapter 8: The Boardroom Betrayal

At 9:00 a.m., the Carter Holdings boardroom was full.

Six directors sat around the table. Rebecca was beside me with three thick folders. Evelyn stood near the presentation screen.

Daniel arrived at 9:12.

Margaret entered two minutes later.

She wore a cream-colored suit, pearl earrings, and the confident expression of someone who believed the outcome had already been decided.

She looked at me.

"Good morning, Nia.""

I didn't respond.

She took the seat opposite mine.

Daniel sat beside her.

Richard arrived last.

Unlike his wife, he looked exhausted.

His hands trembled slightly as he placed his briefcase on the floor.

The chairman, Martin Shaw, called the meeting to order.

"Today's purpose is to review the ownership dispute submitted by Mrs. Whitmore and determine whether any action is required regarding Ms. Carter's executive authority.""

Margaret immediately raised her hand.

"I'd like to clarify that this is not a personal dispute.""

I looked at her.

"Then why did you come to my office demanding that I sign away financial authority?""

She ignored me.

Martin cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Whitmore, please wait until you've been recognized.""

Margaret adjusted her papers.

"Of course.""

Rebecca stood.

"We have reviewed the petition. The claim rests on an alleged agreement between the late Eleanor Carter and the Whitmore family.""

She displayed the document.

"The agreement was never executed. The signature attributed to Ms. Carter is disputed, and the document contains inconsistencies that require forensic examination.""

Margaret smiled.

"That's a convenient explanation.""

Rebecca didn't react.

"Would you like to explain why the document was registered several years after the date it claims to have been signed?""

Margaret's smile disappeared.

"That's a clerical issue.""

"Would you also explain why the notarial stamp belongs to a notary who was not licensed until 2023?""

The room went quiet.

Margaret turned toward Richard.

He looked down.

Rebecca continued.

"We also have evidence of unauthorized transfers from Carter Holdings to several entities associated with the Whitmore family.""

Daniel shifted in his seat.

Martin looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore, did you authorize these transactions?""

Daniel cleared his throat.

"Some of them were business-related.""

"Which business activities?""

"Strategic investments.""

"Please identify the investments.""

Daniel opened his folder.

He looked through the pages.

Then closed it.

"I'll need more time.""

Martin nodded.

"Then the suspension remains in place.""

Margaret leaned forward.

"This is absurd. My son has worked for this company for years.""

I finally spoke.

"Working for a company doesn't make someone its owner.""

She looked directly at me.

"You've become very arrogant.""

I smiled faintly.

"No, Margaret. I've simply stopped being afraid of disappointing you.""

Her face tightened.

Before she could respond, the conference room doors opened.

James Carter walked in.

He was older than the photograph suggested. His hair was mostly gray, and he carried a worn leather briefcase.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

Margaret stood so quickly that her chair scraped backward.

"No.""

Richard went pale.

Daniel looked as though he'd seen a ghost.

James stopped beside the doorway.

"Hello, Margaret.""

She shook her head.

"You're dead.""

James gave a humorless smile.

"Apparently, that was the most convenient arrangement for everyone.""

Martin looked between them.

"Who is this?""

I stood.

"This is my uncle, James Carter.""

Margaret pointed at him.

"He's a fraud. He's been declared dead.""

James placed his briefcase on the table.

"Then perhaps you'd like to explain why you continued paying me through your consulting company.""

The room froze.

Margaret's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

James removed a stack of documents.

"These are the original settlement records. They include the agreement Eleanor Carter actually signed, the trust instructions, and the correspondence exchanged with Richard Whitmore.""

Richard closed his eyes.

Martin looked at him.

"Mr. Whitmore, do you recognize these documents?""

Richard slowly nodded.

"Yes.""

Margaret turned sharply.

"Richard!""

He didn't look at her.

James continued.

"Your petition claims Eleanor promised the Whitmore family a share of Carter Holdings. That is false. The actual agreement prohibited the Whitmores from obtaining ownership or financial control of the company.""

He placed another document on the table.

"This is the original.""

Rebecca examined it.

Then nodded.

"The signature is consistent with the estate records.""

Margaret stood.

"That's not the agreement I saw!""

James looked at her.

"Of course not. You created another one.""

She slammed her hand against the table.

"You're lying!""

James opened his briefcase again.

"And this is why I brought the recording.""

He placed a small digital recorder on the table.

Margaret stared at it.

"What's that?""

"A recording from the meeting you held with Eleanor three months before Nia's wedding.""

Richard whispered, "James, don't.""

James looked at him.

"You've had eleven years to tell the truth.""

He pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Margaret.

Clear. Calm. Confident.

If Nia marries Daniel, we won't need to fight for the company. The shares will eventually become part of the family.

Then my grandmother's voice.

You are mistaken, Margaret. Marriage does not give you ownership.

Margaret laughed on the recording.

Daniel can persuade her. She's in love with him. She'll do whatever he asks.

My hands went cold.

Then another voice spoke.

Daniel.

Mom, that's enough. Nia isn't stupid.

Margaret replied:

No, darling. She's worse. She's generous.

The recording continued.

She thinks everyone deserves help. That's why this will work.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel stared at the table.

His mother had known exactly how to use me.

And he had been there.

He had heard it.

He had known.

James stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew.""

He slowly raised his eyes.

"Nia—"

"You knew what your mother was planning.""

"I was young.""

"You were thirty-one.""

"I didn't think she'd actually do it.""

I stared at him.

"And you married me anyway.""

He shook his head.

"I loved you.""

"Then why did you let me believe your family was simply struggling?""

He looked toward his mother.

Margaret interrupted.

"Enough. This recording proves nothing. It is old, incomplete, and irrelevant.""

James placed another document on the table.

"Then perhaps this will interest you.""

It was a bank statement.

The same $2 million settlement transfer.

But this time, there were additional pages.

The money had entered a protected trust.

Then, within forty-eight hours, $1.6 million had been withdrawn through a series of transfers.

The recipient was Whitmore Legacy Consulting.

Martin leaned forward.

"Who authorized these withdrawals?""

James pointed to the signature.

"Margaret.""

Richard covered his face.

Margaret stood frozen.

I looked at her.

"You stole money from the investors my grandmother was trying to protect.""

She shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

Her eyes filled with anger.

"Your grandmother was going to destroy our family. Richard had spent decades building that business. We had debts, employees, obligations—"

"And you took money meant for the investors.""

"I was protecting my children!""

Daniel looked up.

"Mom, what?""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Don't pretend you didn't benefit.""

Daniel's face drained.

Richard finally spoke.

"Margaret, stop.""

She turned.

"You stop! You promised me we'd never have to answer for this!""

The room went silent.

Martin slowly closed his folder.

Rebecca leaned toward me.

"Nia, I think we have enough to request an immediate formal investigation.""

I nodded.

But James wasn't finished.

He pulled one final document from his briefcase.

It was a police report.

I recognized the date immediately.

The date of my father's supposed death.

James placed it in front of me.

"Nia, your father wasn't killed in a car accident.""

My fingers went numb.

I looked at him.

"Then what happened?""

James took a breath.

"Your father disappeared because he discovered where the missing money had gone.""

I looked at Richard.

He was crying.

Margaret sat motionless.

May you like

And then James said the words that changed everything.

"Your father was alive when the Whitmores reported him dead.""
