Chapter 3: The Secret My Father Found

I spent the next ten minutes trying to understand what was happening.

My stepmother had tried to steal from my father.

She had excluded my daughter.

And now my father was saying there was something else.

Something connected to me.

“Dad,” I said, “what are you talking about?””

He looked at Linda.

Then at Ethan.

“Not here.””

Linda suddenly looked less confident.

“You’re actually going to believe her?””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m not believing anyone. I’m looking at evidence.””

The word evidence changed everything.

Because my father wasn’t the type of person who accused someone without proof.

He had built his entire life on facts.

Linda grabbed Ethan’s arm.

“We’re leaving.””

“No,” my father said.

She stopped.

“You’re not running away from this.””

Her face twisted.

“You think you’re some hero now?””

“No.””

My father looked at Lily’s empty chair.

“I think I failed my daughter once already.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because I knew he wasn’t talking about Linda.

He was talking about me.

That afternoon, my father showed me documents.

Bank transfers.

Private messages.

Account records.

And then one file with my name on it.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

He opened the folder.

Inside was a custody agreement.

Old.

Very old.

I looked closer.

Then my blood ran cold.

“This is my mother’s signature.””

My father nodded.

“Your mother and I made an agreement before she passed away.””

I swallowed.

“What agreement?””

He hesitated.

“That if anything happened to her, certain money would be placed into a trust for you and Lily.””

I frowned.

“I never had a trust.””

“Exactly.””

The room felt smaller.

“Dad…”

His voice broke slightly.

“I thought the paperwork had been handled.””

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

We both knew.

Linda.

My father sat down.

“I found out Linda accessed the account two years ago.””

My hands curled into fists.

“She stole my daughter’s money?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

All those years.

All those times Lily had asked why Ethan got new things while she wore old clothes.

All those times I told her not to compare.

Because I thought life was unfair.

I never imagined someone had taken from her.

My father covered his face.

“I should have checked.””

I looked at him.

“You should have.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

For once, he didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

He just accepted it.

Later that night, I sat beside Lily’s bed.

She was asleep, holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she had carried since she was three.

I wondered how many times she had felt unwanted.

How many moments I had missed.

The next morning, my father’s attorney arrived.

A woman named Rachel.

She placed a folder on the table.

“We found something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Rachel glanced at my father.

Then at me.

“There was a reason Linda didn’t want Lily on that trip.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

Rachel opened the folder.

“She wasn’t trying to save money.””

My father leaned forward.

“Then what was she doing?””

Rachel turned the document around.

There was a reservation.

A hotel booking.

Three names.

My father.

Linda.

Ethan.

But the dates were not for Hawaii.

They were for another city.

A city where Linda had been secretly meeting someone.

Rachel pointed at the name on the reservation.

“This man is the same person she was messaging.””

Marcus.

The man from the text.

My father stared at the page.

Then quietly asked:

“How long has this been happening?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Because she had already found the next piece of evidence.

She pulled out another photo.

And when I saw who was standing beside Linda in it…

I realized this betrayal was bigger than money.
