Chapter 3: The Secret Dad Kept

The next morning, I woke up expecting everything to feel different.

It didn’t.

The house was still the same.

The same kitchen.

The same hallway.

The same photographs on the walls.

But something had changed.

The fear was gone.

For the first time in years, I walked downstairs without wondering what Tyler had planned.

Dad was already sitting at the table.

Two cups of coffee were beside him.

One for him.

One for me.

“You barely slept,” he said.

I sat down.

“Neither did you.””

He looked away.

That told me enough.

“I should have noticed.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because a part of me wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault.

But another part of me was angry.

Not because he didn’t love me.

Because he wasn’t there.

“I tried to tell you before,” I said softly.

Dad closed his eyes.

“When?””

“Little things.””

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””

I stared at my hands.

“Because every time I tried, Linda made me feel like I was the problem.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“She said that?””

“All the time.””

The chair scraped against the floor.

Dad stood up.

“I’m sorry.””

That was the first time I heard those words from him.

Not a quick apology.

Not a forced one.

A real one.

Before I could answer, footsteps came from upstairs.

Tyler appeared.

He looked different.

Less confident.

“Dad.””

My father didn’t look at him.

“Pack a bag.””

Tyler froze.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Why?””

Dad finally faced him.

“Because you’re staying somewhere else for a while.””

Tyler laughed nervously.

“You’re kicking me out because of him?””

Dad’s expression hardened.

“I’m protecting my son.””

Tyler looked at me with anger.

“This is because of you.””

I stood up.

“No. This is because of what you did.””

Tyler moved closer.

“You always wanted this.””

Dad stepped between us.

“Enough.””

Tyler stopped.

Dad continued.

“You think this happened because Alex told me?””

He shook his head.

“No. This happened because you believed nobody would ever hold you accountable.””

Tyler looked away.

For the first time, he looked like a kid who had finally realized his actions had consequences.

Later that afternoon, Dad and I went into his office.

He opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.

“I need to tell you something.””

I looked at the papers.

“What is that?””

He placed them on the desk.

“Something I should have done a long time ago.””

I opened the folder.

My eyes moved across the first page.

Then stopped.

My name was written at the top.

“Dad?””

He sat down.

“When I married Linda, I thought I was building a family.””

He looked exhausted.

“But I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

His eyes met mine.

“I ignored the warning signs.””

The folder contained reports.

Messages.

Notes.

Things I had never seen.

Proof that Linda had been hiding things from him.

“What is this?””

Dad took a deep breath.

“The reason I called the lawyer yesterday.””

My hands went cold.

“Why would a lawyer need this?””

He looked at the folder.

“Because I found out Linda wasn’t just allowing Tyler to hurt you.””

A pause.

“She was encouraging it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Dad pushed another piece of paper toward me.

A printed message.

From Linda.

To Tyler.

The words blurred for a moment.

But one sentence was clear.

“Make sure Alex knows he doesn’t belong here.””

My heart stopped.

May you like

And then Dad whispered:

“There’s more.””
