Chapter 9: The Night Michael Was Born

Marcus stood beneath the auditorium lights.

Laura couldn't speak.

Twenty-two years ago, she had watched him disappear.

She had believed he was dead.

Now he was standing in front of her with gray in his hair and tears in his eyes.

Michael stared at him.

“You're really Marcus?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“You were at my birth?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Laura.

“She needs to tell you.””

Laura swallowed.

She looked at Michael.

“I was in labor for eighteen hours.””

Michael listened.

“Your father was there.””

Daniel nodded.

“I remember.””

“Marcus was there too.””

Marcus looked down.

“I was your father's best friend. I drove him to the hospital when your mother went into labor.””

Michael frowned.

“Then what happened?””

Laura took a breath.

“You were born just after midnight.””

She paused.

“I was exhausted. Daniel was asleep in a chair. Marcus was outside talking to the doctor.””

Marcus nodded.

“The doctor told me something was wrong.””

Michael's expression tightened.

“With me?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Laura.

“With the paperwork.””

Daniel frowned.

“What paperwork?””

“The birth certificate.””

Daniel's face changed.

“What about it?””

Marcus said, “The hospital had the wrong father listed.””

Laura looked confused.

“But Daniel was your father.””

“I know.””

Marcus nodded.

“That wasn't the issue.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a thin folder.

“I found out later that someone had submitted a preliminary form claiming Daniel wasn't the biological father.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Chloe.

“Her.””

Chloe began shaking her head.

“I didn't.””

Marcus opened the folder.

“I have the original.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Show me.””

Marcus handed him the document.

Michael read it.

The form listed Daniel as the father.

But beside his name was a handwritten note:

*Paternity disputed by family member.*

Michael looked at Chloe.

“You?””

Chloe's voice broke.

“I was trying to protect Daniel.””

“You weren't even married to him yet.””

“I loved him.””

“And that gave you the right to rewrite my birth?””

“No.””

Chloe's eyes filled.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That Laura would leave him.””

Laura stared at her.

“I was never leaving Daniel.””

Chloe shook her head.

“You were going to.””

“No.””

“You told Marcus.””

Laura looked at Marcus.

“I did?””

Marcus nodded.

“You told me you were thinking about leaving.””

Laura's eyes widened.

“Because Daniel was cheating.””

Daniel flinched.

Michael looked at his father.

“You cheated?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Before you were born.””

Laura closed her eyes.

“It was brief.””

Marcus said quietly, “But Chloe found out.””

Chloe wiped her cheeks.

“I thought Laura would take everything.””

“What everything?””

“Daniel. The house. The family.””

Michael stared at her.

“I was the family.””

Chloe looked at him.

“I know.””

“No.””

Michael's voice hardened.

“You didn't.””

He pointed at the document.

“You saw my mother as an obstacle.””

Chloe couldn't answer.

Marcus opened the folder again.

“There is more.””

He pulled out another sheet.

Daniel recognized the hospital letterhead.

“What is that?””

“The original paternity test request.””

Daniel read it.

His face went blank.

Marcus continued.

“Chloe requested the test using your name.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You impersonated me.””

“I was desperate.””

“You forged my signature.””

“I needed certainty.””

“You needed control.””

Chloe started crying.

Marcus continued.

“The test was never completed because the doctor refused to use a sample without proper consent.””

Michael looked at the papers.

“Then where did the fake result come from?””

Marcus pointed to another document.

“Chloe created it.””

Chloe shook her head.

“I never intended for it to become permanent.””

Michael stared.

“You told Dad I wasn't his.””

“I told him there was a possibility.””

“You told him Mom had cheated.””

Chloe looked at Laura.

“I thought she had.””

“You knew she hadn't.””

“Yes.””

Laura's voice broke.

“You knew.””

Chloe nodded.

“Yes.””

The word echoed.

Daniel turned away.

He covered his face.

Michael stood silently.

Then he asked Marcus, “Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“When you were seven.””

Michael looked confused.

Marcus continued.

“I went to your house.””

Laura looked at him.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“Chloe answered the door.””

Michael looked at Chloe.

“What did she say?””

Marcus's expression darkened.

“She told me you were asleep.””

Chloe closed her eyes.

“She told me you didn't want to see me.””

Michael whispered, “Again.””

Marcus nodded.

“I left.””

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“You kept everyone away.””

“I thought I was doing what was right.””

“You destroyed our family.””

“I thought I was saving it.””

Laura stepped closer.

“No.””

Chloe looked at her.

“You were saving your place in it.””

Chloe's tears fell.

“Yes.””

The admission silenced everyone.

Michael looked down at the folder.

“There are still things missing.””

Marcus nodded.

“One.””

He pulled out a final document.

It was a hospital death certificate.

Michael frowned.

“Whose is that?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Daniel took it.

His face went white.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“This is your name.””

Marcus nodded.

“Exactly.””

Michael looked confused.

“Then how did you survive?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because that certificate was part of the lie.””

Daniel stared.

“You faked your death?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was threatened.””

“By Chloe?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Marcus looked toward the rear of the auditorium.

A man in a dark suit stood near the exit.

Laura didn't recognize him.

Marcus did.

His face changed.

Michael noticed.

“Who is that?””

Marcus whispered,

“The man who helped Chloe hide the truth.””

Daniel turned.

The stranger immediately walked toward the exit.

Michael moved after him.

“Hey!””

The man broke into a run.

Michael sprinted down the aisle.

Chairs scraped.

People shouted.

Daniel followed.

Laura grabbed her bouquet and ran after them.

The man reached the rear doors.

Michael was only a few steps behind.

“Stop!””

The man turned.

For one second, Michael saw his face clearly.

Then the man smiled.

Not with warmth.

With recognition.

“You look exactly like him.””

Michael stopped.

“Like who?””

The man's smile disappeared.

“Your real father.””

Michael's blood ran cold.

Daniel reached the aisle.

“Michael!””

The man shoved open the door.

Before disappearing, he threw a small black object onto the floor.

Michael picked it up.

A flash drive.

Attached to it was a handwritten note.

*DNA RESULTS — ORIGINAL*

Michael looked at Marcus.

Marcus's expression was grim.

“That,” he said, “is the one thing Chloe was terrified you would ever see.””

Michael looked at Daniel.

Then at Laura.

Then at the closing doors.

He tightened his grip around the drive.

“What if the test says Daniel isn't my father?””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“Then we'll face it together.””

Michael looked at him.

“For once?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“For once.””

Michael turned the flash drive over.

On the back was a date.

Tomorrow.

May you like

And beneath it, a single sentence:

*Your father has been watching you your entire life.*
