Chapter 4: The Account Nobody Knew About

The woman in the gray business suit stood in our doorway, holding an envelope that seemed to have turned the entire house silent.

“My name is Patricia Coleman,” she said.

“I'm a senior investigator with the bank's fraud department. I need to speak with Maya Brooks regarding a financial account connected to her late father's estate.””

I looked at Richard.

He stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Patricia entered the living room and placed the envelope on the coffee table. Her eyes briefly moved toward Denise and Vanessa before returning to me.

“Are you Maya?””

“Yes.””

“I understand this is an upsetting situation. Before I explain anything, I need to establish whether you've ever authorized anyone to access your inheritance or open financial accounts in your name.””

I shook my head.

“No. I've never opened an account connected to my father's estate.””

“Have you ever signed documents allowing your mother or stepsister to manage money on your behalf?””

“No.””

Patricia nodded and opened her folder.

“Then I think you'll want to see this.””

She removed three documents.

The first was a bank statement.

The second was a copy of a financial authorization.

The third was a photograph of a check.

I stared at the numbers.

The account balance was $312,450.

My name appeared at the top.

Maya Elaine Brooks.

I looked up.

“That's mine?””

Patricia answered carefully.

“It's an account that was established using information from your late father's estate. The bank is investigating who has controlled it and whether the transactions were properly authorized.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Where did this account come from?””

Patricia turned a page.

“Your biological father, Daniel Brooks, established a separate investment account shortly before his death. It was intended to transfer to Maya when she reached adulthood.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Another account?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

Patricia looked at Denise.

“That's one of the questions we're trying to answer.””

My mother stood abruptly.

“This is ridiculous. That account was never supposed to be part of this discussion.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Why?””

Denise pressed her fingers against her forehead.

“Because it was complicated.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Patricia.

“Can you leave us alone for a moment?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I'm afraid I can't discuss the investigation privately with one party while excluding the account beneficiary.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“This is unbelievable. Everyone is acting like Mom committed some terrible crime.””

Patricia looked at her.

“Miss Hayes, your name appears on several transactions associated with this account.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Patricia removed another statement.

“Over the last four years, approximately $146,000 was transferred from the account into various personal accounts and payment services.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Your accounts?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know what she's talking about.””

Patricia turned the statement around.

“Would you recognize this account number?””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her lips parted.

Then she sat down.

I felt sick.

“Vanessa?””

She wouldn't look at me.

Denise stepped between us.

“Patricia, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Vanessa was helping me manage household expenses.””

Richard gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Household expenses?””

He pointed toward the documents.

“Did the household need a designer handbag for $4,800?””

Denise said nothing.

“Did the household need a luxury hotel in Miami?””

Still nothing.

“Did the household need a car registered exclusively in Vanessa's name?””

Vanessa finally looked up.

“I was promised that money!””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“Promised by whom?””

She swallowed.

“Mom.””

I turned toward Denise.

“You promised her my inheritance?””

Denise began crying.

“Everything I did was for my daughters.””

I shook my head.

“No. Everything you did was for Vanessa.””

She flinched.

Richard stood beside me.

“That's enough, Denise.””

But I wasn't finished.

“Do you know what I did when I couldn't afford my tuition? I called Dad and told him I might have to leave school. I cried in the parking lot because I was ashamed that I couldn't pay my bills.””

My voice cracked.

“And you knew there was money waiting for me?””

Denise covered her mouth.

“I was trying to keep the family together.””

“What family?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She got everything. I got excuses.””

Vanessa jumped up.

“Don't act like you were deprived! You had everything you needed!””

I stared at her.

“I worked two jobs to buy groceries.””

“You had Dad!””

“And you had Mom taking money that belonged to me!””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Patricia quietly gathered the documents.

“I need to explain the next step. The bank has placed temporary restrictions on the disputed funds. We will preserve the records and cooperate with the appropriate authorities.””

Richard nodded.

“Good.””

Patricia looked at me.

“Maya, you'll need independent legal representation to protect your interests. Your father's attorney can provide copies of the estate documents, but I recommend you also speak with someone who represents only you.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

She handed me her business card.

Then she turned toward Denise.

“Mrs. Hayes, please don't attempt to move or conceal any assets connected to these accounts. Any additional transfers could complicate the investigation.””

Denise's eyes widened.

“I wouldn't do that.””

Patricia didn't argue.

She simply closed her briefcase and left.

For nearly a minute, nobody moved.

Then Vanessa picked up her phone.

“I need to call someone.””

Richard held out his hand.

“Before you leave, we're going to discuss the documents.””

She stared at him.

“You can't tell me what to do.””

“No,” he replied.

“But I can tell you that nobody is transferring another dollar from Maya's accounts.””

Vanessa looked toward Denise.

“Mom, say something.””

My mother wiped her face.

“Richard, please. We can resolve this without humiliating anyone.””

He shook his head.

“You've had years to resolve it.””

“I made mistakes.””

“Multiple unauthorized transfers aren't a mistake.””

Denise's expression hardened.

“So now you're going to destroy my daughter over money?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Your daughter destroyed Maya's graduation dress yesterday. Today, we discovered that money intended for Maya's future was being spent on Vanessa's lifestyle.””

Vanessa threw her phone onto the couch.

“Why do you always make me the villain?””

I looked at her.

“Because you keep choosing to hurt me.””

She glared at me.

“You think you're so innocent.””

“I didn't take your money.””

Her face twisted.

For a moment, I thought she might say something.

Instead, she stormed upstairs.

A bedroom door slammed.

Denise followed her.

Richard stayed behind.

He sat beside me and rubbed his forehead.

“I should have investigated this sooner.””

I looked at him.

“You didn't know.””

“I knew something wasn't right.””

“Dad, you didn't know about the second account.””

He looked at the documents.

“No. But I knew your mother was making financial decisions that didn't make sense.””

I leaned against his shoulder.

“What happens now?””

He was quiet for a moment.

“Now we find out exactly how much was taken.””

That evening, I went upstairs to collect some photographs from my old bedroom.

As I passed Vanessa's room, I heard her talking.

The door was slightly open.

“I'm telling you, the bank froze everything,” she whispered into her phone.

A pause.

“No, I can't just give it back.””

Another pause.

“Because Maya knows!””

I stopped.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Mom said the second transfer would cover everything. She said nobody would ever find out.””

My stomach tightened.

Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.

“What am I supposed to do about the house?””

I stepped closer.

She continued.

“No. Dad doesn't know about that document.””

I heard a drawer open.

Then she whispered:

“If Maya finds out who actually owns this house, we're finished.””

I stood motionless in the hallway.

The house.

My father's house.

What could Vanessa possibly mean?

I stepped backward.

But before I could reach the stairs, Vanessa opened her bedroom door.

Her eyes met mine.

For three seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she slowly put her phone behind her back.

“How long have you been standing there?””

I looked directly at her.

“Long enough to hear you mention a document about the house.””

May you like

Her face went white.

And for the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid of me.
