Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

Laura played the recording the following morning.

We gathered in her conference room.

Richard sat beside me. Michael was across the table. Marcus stood near the window.

A small digital speaker rested in front of Laura.

She explained that the recording had been copied and preserved, and that the original device would remain secured for further examination.

“Before we listen,” she said, “remember that we don't yet know the full context. We need to distinguish what the recording establishes from what still needs independent verification.””

I nodded.

My palms were sweating.

Laura pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a man's voice filled the room.

My father's voice.

I hadn't heard it in sixteen years.

“Maya's trust needs to be protected, Thomas. You have no authority to touch those shares.””

Another voice answered.

Thomas.

“You're making this unnecessarily complicated.””

Daniel replied:

“It's not complicated. The company belongs to my daughter.””

There was a sound of a chair scraping.

Then Thomas spoke again.

“You're talking about a child who won't even understand what she's inheriting for another decade.””

“That doesn't make it yours.””

A pause.

Then my mother's voice.

“Daniel, please. Can we not do this tonight?””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her voice from that time felt like opening a door into a room I had never known existed.

My father answered.

“Denise, you signed the transfers. You knew exactly what was happening.””

My mother's voice trembled.

“I was trying to help.””

“By helping Thomas move money out of the company?””

Thomas interrupted.

“Watch your mouth, Daniel.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Why? Are you worried someone might finally hear the truth?””

There was a loud noise.

Then the recording became muffled.

Thomas spoke again.

“You think you can remove me from the company? I've built half of this business.””

“My daughter owns the controlling interest.””

“And what happens when she's grown? You think she'll know how to run it?””

“I'll make sure she has the choice.””

Then my mother's voice:

“Thomas, you said this would be temporary.””

Silence.

I opened my eyes.

Richard looked at me.

The recording continued.

Thomas spoke in a quieter voice.

“You were supposed to keep Daniel calm.””

Denise answered:

“I told you he found the documents.””

My father interrupted.

“You're both talking as though I'm not standing here.””

There was another pause.

Then Daniel said something that made everyone in the room go still.

“I've already spoken to the authorities. Tomorrow morning, I'm handing over everything.””

A chair moved.

Thomas's voice became sharper.

“You wouldn't.””

“I already have.””

My mother began crying.

“Daniel, please. Think about Maya.””

“I am thinking about Maya. That's why I'm doing this.””

Then Thomas said:

“You're going to destroy this family.””

My father answered quietly.

“No. You did that when you stole from my daughter.””

The recording ended with a sudden crash.

Then silence.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the speaker.

My father had known.

He had known that people close to him were taking money and trying to take my inheritance.

And he had been trying to stop them.

I wiped my cheeks.

“Was that recorded the night he died?””

Laura nodded.

“The date stamp suggests it was made the evening before the accident. We'll need to authenticate the timeline.””

I looked toward Marcus.

“Why didn't you tell anyone about this?””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I didn't have the recording. Your father kept it.””

“But you knew something happened.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you keep investigating?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Because I had a family too. I had children. Thomas made it very clear that he knew where we lived.””

I swallowed.

I couldn't blame him.

But I couldn't stop wondering how many people had been frightened into silence while my father's life was rewritten.

Richard reached for my hand.

“We're going to get answers.””

I nodded.

Then I looked at Laura.

“Can this prove what happened to my father?””

“It may support further investigation. The financial misconduct is one matter. Establishing the circumstances of Daniel's death is another. We'll need the original police file, forensic records, and independent examination of the recording.””

I looked at the speaker.

“Then let's get everything.””

Two days later, Laura received an unexpected call from the bank.

The investigation had uncovered another transaction.

A large payment had been made from the company shortly before Daniel's death.

The payment had gone to an account associated with a private security contractor.

The account was registered to a company Thomas had used in several other transactions.

Richard stared at the statement.

“Why would an engineering company pay a security contractor?””

Laura answered carefully.

“That isn't necessarily suspicious by itself. But the timing and the lack of supporting documentation make it worth investigating.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Did my father know about this payment?””

Marcus nodded.

“He asked me to check it.””

“What did you find?””

“That the invoice didn't match any legitimate service provided to the company.””

Laura wrote something down.

“Do you remember the contractor's name?””

Marcus nodded.

“Blackridge Security.””

Laura stopped writing.

“Are you certain?””

“Yes.””

She turned toward Richard.

“That's interesting.””

“Why?””

“Blackridge was also listed in the insurance investigation following Daniel's accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why would an insurance company investigate them?””

Laura opened another file.

“Because the original claim included a statement from a private security contractor who allegedly witnessed the accident.””

I looked at the document.

There was a name beneath the statement.

Elliot Grant.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

“Because Elliot worked for Thomas. He wasn't anywhere near the accident.””

Laura looked up.

“Do you have proof?””

Marcus nodded.

“I have his time sheets from that week.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Where?””

Marcus opened his folder.

“I kept copies of everything Daniel asked me to investigate.””

He removed several pages.

One showed Elliot Grant clocking in at the company's warehouse on the night Daniel died.

The time was 8:42 p.m.

According to the accident report, Daniel's collision occurred at approximately 9:05 p.m., nearly twenty miles away.

I looked at Laura.

“Could he have been at both places?””

“Not without some explanation,” she said.

“We'll need to verify the time records and their source.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He was with Thomas that night. I saw them together.””

Richard looked at him.

“Where?””

“At the warehouse.””

The room became silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“Are you saying Thomas was there too?””

Marcus nodded.

“I saw his car.””

Laura carefully gathered the records.

“This changes the direction of the investigation.””

That evening, Richard and I returned home.

Denise was sitting in the living room.

She looked up when we entered.

“Where have you been?””

Richard placed his keys on the table.

“Meeting with the attorneys.””

She looked at me.

“Did you listen to the recording?””

I stopped.

“How did you know?””

Denise lowered her eyes.

“Thomas called me.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“He contacted you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“This afternoon.””

I stared at her.

“What did he say?””

She hesitated.

“He said you were making a mistake.””

I stepped closer.

“What kind of mistake?””

“He said the recording was taken out of context.””

Richard laughed without humor.

“Of course he did.””

Denise continued.

“He said Daniel was angry that night. He said the company was collapsing and that everyone was under pressure.””

I looked at her.

“Did my father threaten him?””

“No.””

“Did he threaten you?””

Denise began crying.

“He said he would expose us.””

“Us?””

She looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“I signed documents. I helped Thomas move money. I thought it would be temporary.””

I felt sick.

“You knew he was stealing?””

“I knew money was being transferred.””

“And you let him?””

“I was afraid of what would happen if I refused.””

Richard's voice became cold.

“You had another option. You could have told Daniel the truth.””

Denise wiped her face.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at me.

“Maya, you have to understand. Thomas controlled everything. He knew about my financial situation.

He knew about Vanessa. He said he could make our lives miserable.””

I frowned.

“What did he know about Vanessa?””

Denise hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Vanessa isn't the person you think she is.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Denise looked toward the staircase.

“There's something about her birth that I never told Richard.””

Richard stepped forward.

“What are you talking about?””

Denise's face crumpled.

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, the front door slammed.

Vanessa walked into the living room carrying a shopping bag.

She stopped when she saw all of us.

“What?””

Denise stood.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Not now.””

“It's important.””

Vanessa threw the shopping bag onto the couch.

“Mom, I told you I'm not discussing this.””

Richard crossed his arms.

“You will.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You're not my father.””

The words hung in the air.

Richard's expression barely changed.

“No,” he said quietly.

“Apparently, that's what your mother has been trying to tell me.””

Vanessa froze.

I looked between them.

Denise began crying harder.

Then Richard asked the question that made Vanessa drop her phone.

“Denise, is Vanessa really Thomas Brooks's daughter?””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stared at her mother.

Then at Richard.

And finally at me.

Her lips trembled.

“Mom?””

Denise covered her face.

For the first time, Vanessa looked just as shocked as I felt.

And I suddenly understood why Thomas had been willing to risk everything to protect her.

May you like

Because she wasn't just the girl who had benefited from my inheritance.

She was connected to the man who had stolen it.
