Chapter 9: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
Denise didn't answer immediately.
She stood in the middle of the living room with both hands covering her face.
Vanessa was frozen beside the couch.
Richard remained near the doorway, his expression unreadable.
I looked at my mother.
“Is it true?””
Denise slowly lowered her hands.
“Yes.””
One word.
That was all it took to change everything.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. No, Mom. Tell them they're wrong.””
Denise began crying.
“Vanessa, sweetheart…”
“Don't call me that!””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Are you saying Thomas is my biological father?””
Denise nodded.
Vanessa stared at her.
Then she turned toward Richard.
“Dad…”
Richard looked at her.
“You've called me Dad for twelve years.””
“I know.””
“I raised you. I paid for your education. I helped you buy your first car. I was there when you needed someone.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I know.””
He took a breath.
“And all this time, your mother knew?””
Denise nodded.
Richard looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa began shaking her head.
“This can't be happening.””
I watched her carefully.
The girl who had stood beside the fire pit holding my empty dress hanger was now crying in the middle of the house.
I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
Because I knew that whatever the truth was, it didn't erase what she had done.
I looked at Denise.
“When did you know?””
Denise sat down.
“Before Vanessa was born.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Before our marriage?””
“Yes.””
He looked at her.
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“I wanted a fresh start.””
Richard gave a small, bitter laugh.
“A fresh start built on a lie?””
Denise wiped her cheeks.
“I loved you.””
He stared at her.
“You loved what I could provide.””
She flinched.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I believed her.
For the first time in days, I believed her.
But that didn't make me forget the dress.
Or the inheritance.
Or the years she had spent treating me like an intruder in my own home.
Richard asked everyone to sit down.
Denise tried to explain.
She said she had met Thomas before she met Richard. Their relationship had been complicated, and Thomas had never wanted the responsibility of raising a child.
When Vanessa was born, Denise had been alone.
Thomas had continued seeing her privately, but he had refused to acknowledge Vanessa publicly.
Then Denise met Richard.
He offered her stability, kindness, and a family.
She accepted.
And she kept the truth hidden.
“Why didn't you tell me before we got married?”” Richard asked.
Denise looked at him.
“I was afraid you'd leave.””
“So you decided I didn't deserve to know?””
“I thought we could become a family.””
Richard shook his head.
“You don't build a family by hiding the truth from the people in it.””
Vanessa sat silently.
I looked at her.
“Did Thomas know you were his daughter?””
Denise nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did he ever tell you?””
“No. He agreed that it was better if Vanessa grew up believing Richard was her father.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“Then why was he always around?””
Denise looked up.
“What?””
“Thomas. He was always calling you. He sent gifts. He took me shopping when I was younger.””
I stared at her.
She turned toward Denise.
“You told me he was a family friend.””
Denise nodded.
“He wanted to be close to you without creating questions.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“So he knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he let me call Richard Dad?””
Denise began crying again.
“I thought it was best.””
Vanessa turned toward Richard.
“I'm sorry.””
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
“I don't know what to say.””
Then he sat down.
“I need time.””
The following morning, Laura called an emergency meeting.
She had received new information from the company records and wanted everyone involved to hear it together.
I arrived with Richard.
Denise and Vanessa came separately.
Thomas was already waiting inside the conference room.
He looked irritated.
“What is this about?””
Laura placed several documents on the table.
“New information concerning the ownership of Brooks Engineering.””
Thomas leaned back.
“I thought we already discussed that.””
“We did. But we've now received additional records concerning the original shareholder trust.””
She opened a folder.
“The documents show that Daniel Brooks intended his daughter to retain controlling ownership of the company.””
Thomas nodded.
“I've heard that claim.””
Laura continued.
“However, the documents also reveal that several transfers were made without the necessary authorization.””
Thomas shrugged.
“Then take it up with Denise.””
Denise looked at him.
“You told me those documents were legitimate.””
Thomas turned toward her.
“You signed them.””
“You said Maya had already approved everything!””
Thomas's expression hardened.
“Watch what you say.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Don't threaten her.””
Thomas laughed.
“Richard, this has nothing to do with you.””
“It has everything to do with me when you use my home and my family to hide your financial dealings.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Maya, I think you should understand that these matters are more complicated than your lawyers are making them sound.””
I stared at him.
“You stole from my father.””
His jaw tightened.
“Your father was not the saint everyone remembers.””
Laura interrupted.
“We're not here to debate his character.””
She placed another document on the table.
“This is a copy of a private insurance agreement signed shortly before Daniel's death.””
Thomas's expression changed.
“What agreement?””
Laura looked at him.
“An agreement involving Blackridge Security.””
Thomas sat forward.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the original company records.””
She continued.
“The agreement included a payment for personal protection services on the night of Daniel's accident.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That proves nothing.””
“Perhaps not. But the payment records contradict the statement provided to the insurance investigators.””
She placed another page beside it.
“Your employee, Elliot Grant, claimed he witnessed Daniel's accident. Yet the time sheets indicate he was at the company warehouse.””
Thomas looked toward Denise.
She lowered her eyes.
Laura continued.
“We also have a witness who places you at that warehouse that evening.””
Thomas's face darkened.
“Who?””
Laura didn't answer.
Instead, she turned to Marcus.
Marcus stood.
“I saw your car, Thomas.””
Thomas stared at him.
“You're lying.””
“I saw you leave the warehouse at 8:56 p.m.””
“You don't know what you're talking about.””
Marcus opened his folder.
“I kept the records Daniel asked me to preserve.””
Thomas's hands tightened around the edge of the table.
Laura spoke again.
“We are providing these materials to the relevant authorities. Any questions about the accident will be handled through the proper investigative process.””
Thomas stood.
“This is a setup.””
Richard didn't move.
“No, Thomas. This is what happens when people finally stop being afraid of you.””
Thomas grabbed his briefcase.
Before leaving, he turned toward Vanessa.
“Come with me.””
Vanessa didn't move.
He repeated himself.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Why?””
Thomas stared.
“Because I'm your father.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“You knew?””
Thomas said nothing.
“You knew all these years?””
He looked away.
“I was protecting you.””
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
“From what? The truth?””
Thomas reached for her arm.
She pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
He stared at her.
Then he walked out.
After the meeting, Vanessa remained in the parking lot.
I found her sitting on a low concrete wall, staring at her phone.
For a moment, I considered walking away.
Then I remembered the years we had spent under the same roof.
I sat several feet away.
She didn't look at me.
“I didn't know,” she whispered.
I nodded.
“I believe you.””
She wiped her face.
“I didn't know he was my father. I didn't know about the company. I didn't know about the money.””
I looked at her.
“But you knew about my dress.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“You knew I had worked for it.””
“Yes.””
“And you still burned it.””
She began crying.
“I was angry.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because everyone kept telling me how proud they were of you.””
I didn't respond.
She continued.
“Dad was always talking about your grades. Your work. Your plans.
Mom kept saying I needed to be more responsible. I felt like I was disappearing.””
I stared at her.
“So you decided to make me feel smaller?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I thought if I could take away something important from you, maybe I'd feel better.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't just take away a dress. You tried to take away a moment I'd spent years working toward.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No, Vanessa. I don't think you do.””
She wiped her eyes again.
“I wanted Dad to choose me.””
I looked at her.
“He did choose you. Every day. He raised you.””
She looked away.
“And you still weren't satisfied.””
She had no answer.
For several seconds, we sat in silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I'm going to tell the investigators everything I know.””
I looked at her.
“Why now?””
“Because Thomas called me last night.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
She unlocked her phone and showed me a message.
It read:
If anyone asks, you never knew about the transfers. Your mother handled everything. Don't destroy your future trying to protect people who won't protect you.
I read it twice.
Vanessa continued.
“He also asked me to sign another document.””
“What document?””
“A statement saying I received the money as gifts from Mom, not from the trust.””
I looked at her.
“Did you sign it?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I believed her.
But I wanted more than words.
“Will you give the investigators your phone?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Three days later, Vanessa gave a formal statement.
She admitted receiving money from accounts Denise controlled. She admitted that Thomas had paid for several luxury purchases and that she had been told the funds were legitimate family money.
She also handed over messages showing that Thomas had instructed her to destroy certain financial records.
One message was particularly important.
It had been sent two weeks before Daniel's death.
Your father is asking too many questions. Keep Denise calm. We need the shares transferred before he changes the arrangements.
Another message came the following day.
If Daniel refuses to cooperate, I will handle it.
Laura read the messages carefully.
“We need to preserve these and verify their origin.””
Richard nodded.
“Whatever is necessary.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was sitting with her hands folded, no designer handbag, no expensive jewelry.
For the first time, she looked like someone who understood that money could disappear.
But then Laura found something else.
A message from Thomas to Denise dated the morning after Daniel's accident.
The documents are safe. Nobody will connect the transfer to me. Make sure the girl never sees the original agreement.
I stared at the screen.
“The girl?””
Laura nodded.
“He appears to be referring to you.””
My throat tightened.
Then she opened the attached file.
It was a scanned document.
A document bearing my biological father's signature.
A document that had apparently been hidden for twenty-three years.
Laura studied it.
“This may be the original agreement Daniel was preparing to finalize.””
I leaned forward.
“What does it say?””
Laura read the first page.
Then she stopped.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She turned the document toward Richard.
He read it.
His face went pale.
I looked between them.
“Please. Someone tell me.””
Laura finally spoke.
“This document doesn't just establish your ownership of the company.””
She paused.
“It also names someone else as the person responsible for protecting your inheritance if your father became unable to do so.””
I stared at the page.
There were two names.
Daniel Brooks.
And Richard Hayes.
My father had chosen Richard before they ever became family.
Richard looked devastated.
“I never knew Daniel had done this.””
I reached for the document.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Richard is the only man I trust to protect my daughter if I'm not here.
My eyes filled.
Then Laura turned the page.
There was one more paragraph.
A paragraph explaining why Daniel had chosen Richard.
It contained a reference to a conversation that had taken place the night before the accident.
And it revealed something none of us had expected.
Richard hadn't just become my stepfather by chance.
My biological father had personally asked him to look after me.
And Richard had kept a promise he hadn't even known he was making.
But the document ended with another troubling sentence.
If the transfer is ever challenged, the original recording and witness statement must be presented together.
Laura looked at Marcus.
“We have the recording.””
Marcus nodded.
“And I have the witness statement.””
Laura gathered both documents.
“Then we may finally have enough to establish what Daniel was trying to expose.””
Richard took my hand.
I looked at the handwritten note again.
For the first time in years, I felt connected to my biological father in a way I had never experienced before.
He had thought about my future.
He had tried to protect me.
And even when he was gone, he had somehow found a way to reach me.
Then Laura's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
And slowly stood.
“What happened?”” Richard asked.
Laura covered the receiver.
“The investigators have located Elliot Grant.””
My heart began racing.
“Thomas's employee?””
She nodded.
“He's agreed to cooperate.””
Richard looked at her.
“Does he have information about the accident?””
Laura listened to the caller again.
Then she looked directly at me.
“He says he knows who was driving the SUV that night.””
I held my breath.
Laura ended the call.
And delivered the words that changed everything.
“According to Elliot, Thomas wasn't the only person in that vehicle.””
She paused.
“Denise was there too.””
I turned toward my mother.
She had just entered the conference room.
And the moment she heard those words, she dropped her handbag.
May you like
Because she knew the truth was finally catching up with her.
And this time, there would be nowhere left to hide.
