Chapter 14: The Last Mission

The old military base looked smaller than I remembered.

That was the strangest part.

For years, it lived in my nightmares.

A massive battlefield.

A place where everything changed.

But standing there again, it looked ordinary.

Empty buildings.

Rusting fences.

Silent roads.

Almost peaceful.

Almost.

Hale drove beside me.

Neither of us spoke for the first twenty minutes.

There were too many things between us.

Too many unanswered questions.

Finally, he said:

"I know you hate me.""

I looked out the window.

"I don't know what I feel.""

"That's worse.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because hate means you still care.""

I didn't answer.

The base entrance appeared ahead.

The place where my final mission began.

The place where my life split into before and after.

We parked.

I stepped out.

My cane touched the ground.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The sound followed me.

Like a countdown.

"You should know something," Hale said.

I looked at him.

"I wasn't the one who saved you.""

"What?""

"The day of the attack.""

He looked toward the empty field.

"Someone moved you before the second explosion.""

My heart tightened.

"Who?""

Hale didn't answer.

Then a voice came from behind us.

"Me.""

I turned.

Captain Wilson.

Again.

I was getting tired of ghosts returning.

"You?""

Wilson nodded.

"I carried you out.""

I stared.

"Then why did everyone think you died?""

His expression darkened.

"Because I wanted them to.""

"Why?""

"Because after I found out who betrayed us, I realized I was next.""

The wind moved through the empty field.

"What did you find?""

Wilson looked at Hale.

Then me.

"The original mission order.""

Hale opened his folder.

Inside was a copy.

"The mission was changed twelve hours before deployment.""

I read the document.

My eyes narrowed.

"Who authorized the change?""

Wilson looked at me.

"You already know.""

I did.

General Voss.

The name burned.

"He sent us there.""

Wilson nodded.

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

Seven years.

Seven years believing I failed.

Believing I wasn't fast enough.

Strong enough.

Good enough.

But the truth was...

I was betrayed.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Voss.

A location.

A warehouse.

One sentence.

*Come finish this.*

Hale looked at my phone.

"He wants you there.""

"I know.""

"It's a trap.""

I nodded.

"I know that too.""

Wilson stepped forward.

"Then why go?""

I looked at the field.

"The same reason I went the first time.""

They looked at me.

"Because people were counting on me.""

This time, I wasn't going alone.

We arrived at the warehouse before sunset.

Inside, General Voss waited.

Older.

Slower.

But still carrying himself like a commander.

He smiled when he saw me.

"Leon Carter.""

I stared.

"General.""

He looked at my cane.

"Still standing.""

I almost smiled.

"You sound disappointed.""

He laughed.

"You always were difficult.""

I stepped closer.

"Why?""

The smile disappeared.

"Why what?""

"Why send us there?""

Silence.

Then he said:

"Because sacrifices have to be made.""

My hands tightened.

"You sacrificed my men.""

"I protected something bigger.""

"What?""

"Power.""

The honesty shocked me.

He didn't even pretend anymore.

"You think people remember soldiers?""

He walked around the warehouse.

"They remember winners.""

I stared.

"You destroyed lives for a promotion.""

"For influence.""

He corrected.

"Not the same thing.""

I felt sick.

"You killed people.""

"No.""

His voice became cold.

"I made decisions.""

There it was.

The same excuse.

The same phrase everyone used.

A decision.

A mistake.

Fear.

I looked at him.

"Why involve my family?""

He smiled.

"Because you wouldn't listen.""

My stomach dropped.

"Thomas?""

"He was easy.""

"Denise?""

"She was afraid.""

"Raymond?""

"He was desperate.""

Every betrayal had a reason.

But none of them erased the damage.

"You ruined my life.""

Voss looked at me.

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You rebuilt it.""

I stared.

"What?""

"You became stronger.""

The words disgusted me.

"Don't pretend you did me a favor.""

He stepped closer.

"I gave you a purpose.""

I laughed.

A real laugh this time.

"You took my leg and called it a gift.""

His expression changed.

For the first time...

he looked uncertain.

Because he realized something.

I wasn't the broken soldier he expected.

I was the man who survived him.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Voss looked toward the door.

"What is this?""

I smiled.

"You really thought I came alone?""

His face changed.

Hale stepped inside with federal investigators behind him.

Voss stared.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"The problem with burying the truth...""

I stepped closer.

"...is someone always remembers where you buried it.""

As agents moved toward him, Voss looked at me.

"You think this ends here?""

I stared.

"It ends when you finally answer for it.""

He smiled strangely.

Then whispered:

"You still don't know the whole truth.""

I froze.

"What?""

He looked past me.

Toward Hale.

Then Wilson.

"The person who gave me the information...""

He smiled.

"...was standing beside you the entire time.""

Everyone turned.

May you like

Slowly.

Toward Hale.
